94 jeep cherokee overheating

Question From bob29 on 94 jeep cherokee overheating

I have a 94 jeep cherokee sport that 6cyl wants to overheat when running the a/c. Its now summer and the tempatures are getting to 105 and up. Recentley changed the radiator hoses, coolant, and thermostat. Going to straighten out the fins on the smaller radiator in front, oil or tranny cooler not sure. Both fans are running. any chance a a/c recharge would help with this problem? Any suggestions are welcome thanks.

Response From bobfrompgd

Buy a heavy duty radiator. I have cherokee. a new radiator would help some but get a bigger one, its the only thing that will really solve the problem. Also the electric fan wont come on unless the ac is running or temp. reaches 215 degrees then its to late to bring it down. I put a toggle switch on it so I can control it, huge help. In summer as i start engine fan comes on. Cherokees have weak cooling systems unless they came with a tow package or for plowing snow. Several parts folks told me a larger radiator was not available but they are . look online.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

In addition to HTs suggestions, take a good look at the fan clutch. If there are any doubts change it out.

Response From Hammer Time

No, no chance of that. Sounds like you just need a new radiator. The one you have has diminished capacity now.

Question From saleen on overheating-cherokee

I HAVE A 1990 JEEP CHEROKEE,4.0L,OVER HEATING IF IDLE TO LONG OR STUCK IN TRAFFIC,DOES ALRIGHT GOING DOWN THE FREEWAY.DID NOT HAVE PROBLEM TILL I CHANGED THE AUTO TRANS AND PULLED THE RADIATOR OUT TO BE CLEANED AT LOCAL RADIATOR SHOP,ALSO CHANGED THERMOSTAT AT SAME TIME.THANK YOU.

Response From bobfrompgd

I have 95 cherokee and have battled the same problem. Large engine in a small space. Small cooling system. I put on a high flow water pump, this helped a little. The electric cooling fan will not come on unless the ac is running or the engine reaches 215 degrees and by then it will not bring the temp down. I put on a toggle switch so I can control the electric fan. This was a big help. I have a heavy duty radiator for next summer. It took me a while to find one, I know from experience I wont have a cooling problem next summer. In the book that came with vehicle it even mentions hot weather with ac on, or going up a mountain. It is a weak cooling system. I put larger radiators on all my vehicles if I can . They all have over 200k miles. Cherokees are great I wish they still made them.

You don't need all that non OEM stuff. There is a problem with your vehicle and you just haven't found it yet. The factory cooling system is more than efficient when working properly.

Response From bobfrompgd

O NO the sherriff..

Response From Sidom

Check to see if your cooling fan is coming on.

Response From saleen

IT HAS A DIRECT DRIVE CLUTCH FAN.THANKS.

Response From Hammer Time

If it has HD cooling, it will also have an electric fan.

Response From Hammer Time

Why did you have it cleaned in the first place. You must have already had a problem, right?

Response From saleen

YOU ARE CORRECT AND EVEN WHEN THAT COMES ON IT DOES NOT DETER IT FROM BOILING OVER IN THE RESEVIOR.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

If your not having a problem at cruising speed, it can only be a fan problem. It may need a new fan clutch. Make sure the shroud is good and the radiator air flow isn't restricted.

Response From saleen

NO ISSUES.PUT A NEW TRANS IN AND CLEANED PER WARRENTY.

Response From Hammer Time

It's possible but not real likely. Just driving it should work the air out.

Response From saleen

I WILL CHECK THAT OUT.COULD IT STILL HAVE SOME AIR TRAPPED,I HAVE HEAT.THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

Response From saleen

I DID NOT THINK SO BUT I AM UNFAMILIAR WITH THE JEEP.THANK YOU.

Overheating jeep, again

Question From zmasterflex on Overheating jeep, again

96 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 72k. Last summer the jeep would overheat usually after coming off the highway to street speeds. I flushed the coolant and changed the thermostat (thermostat I bought came with a pre-drilled hole). Now that it's getting warmer outside, the problem starts again. Ill be on the highway for an hour, and when I stop to pay a toll or when I get to the local streets, the engine gets so hot I have to blast the heater to prevent the heat gauge from redlining. Any suggestions? thanks

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I would suspect a combination of a radiator that isn't up to snuff any more and a weak fan clutch, assuming it doesn't have an electric fan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Agree that radiator or fan for it isn't capable. That hole in new thermostat is there so you can fill this full and slowly air will bleed thru that - some will use a tiny notch on the side and neither are causing overheating however done. Low coolant level will and noticed when heater doesn't blow hot for you.

4.0 engine is pretty tough but do everything still not to overheat,

T

Response From nickwarner

If it helps you guys, the Jeep Cherokee has both a clutch fan and an electric one. An auxiliary electric is mounted on the radiator next to the clutch fan driven from the engine. When the radiators go out they can definately do this. I had a Cherokee myself with the same engine that did the same thing. When its getting hot, does the electric fan come on? Its temp controlled but if you have working AC then it will stay on anytime the AC is on. Easy way to see if the electric is working and carry on with other tests as Tom and HT have suggested.

Response From Hammer Time

No Nick, they all don't. I have a 97 sitting in my driveway right now that has clutch fan only.

Temp Gauge Needle

Question From Mel on Temp Gauge Needle

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can help me i own a 98 Jeep Cherokee Classic which has done about 150,000km. In the past 6 months i have spent about $1800.00 on it...replacing the battery, fan clutch, temp censors, hoses, fuel pump and water pump.

It has been driving fine but on the way to work this morning my temp gauge went up quite a fair way, not into the red and only seemed to go up when i am idling but it is strange as i have had all that stuff replaced, i also noted that the oil gauge also went up a little bit. Also the needle did not go back to 0 when i turned the car off.

Also the other strange thing this is i have my air con, radio and lights on my new battery the battery charge seems to move from the centre to left.....like i am sucking to much power. Don't know if this is another issue or could be joined in with the car overheating.

I am worried my mechanic is ripping me off and not fixing the car properly...does anyone have any suggests about what it might be ?

Response From brbettge Top Rated Answer

Just to add my two cents worth... This sounds an awful lot like a ground issue. A ground wire that has not been tightened or has been left off and may be "dangling" and touching a metal grounding surface somewhere. It is really easy to miss one even for a seasoned mechanic. Go back to the mechanic and have him check it over again with ground issues especially.

Ground problems cause havoc in automotive systems making all sorts of electrical gremlins pop their heads out. I always did hate those little suckers!! good luck, it will most likely turn out to be an easy fix....when found! rick

Response From DanD

Was the engine actually on the verge of overheating or is it a gauge issue; is my first thought?
Why I ask is because of the other things you mentioned; the oil pressure and voltage gauges also doing something different, than what you think is their normal?

A couple more questions come to mind; why was the water pump & fan clutch replaced?
Was the vehicle overheating at that time; if so how hot did YOU let the engine get?
Overheating an engine may have caused internal damage that will not show up right away; not like what a leaking water pump or a fan clutch with bad/seized bearings would.
They possibly were the cause of an overheat then but now you may have to deal with the effects of the engine getting to hot.

Then you never know; it’s possible that the new fan clutch is defective and not drawing enough air through the rad while at idle, allowing the engine to become hot?
Oil viscosity changes with heat, which would change your gauge readings. As well as electrical loads; the hotter an electrical system gets the harder things have to work, lowering system voltage.

What you need to do is go back to you mechanic and tell him what you’ve told us. Let him check the previous repairs, along with all the other possibilities that might be causing this.

One last question and this isn’t solely directed at you; so don’t take offence.
Why is it that when people don’t understand, what’s happening to their vehicle; the first thing that comes to mind is.
I’m worried my mechanic is ripping me off
Could it be that something else is happening to a ten year old vehicle; it’s a piece of machinery; machinery that even in ideal conditions breakdown; where out in day too day use are we going to find ideal conditions.

Go and talk to your mechanic; don’t let suspicion get in the way of reality.

Dan.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

?? This could be caused by the belt(s) not being tight enough except the oil pressure which I don't know how that might be involved right now. Step one is to check the belt tension with all that at once going on,

Jeep Overheating Dilemma

Question From Scoot on Jeep Overheating Dilemma

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with 90,000 miles that began overheating about 3 months ago. It happened after a freeway drive of about an hour up in the mountains on some twisty roads. Luckily the trouble began AFTER I was off the mountain!

I took it to one mechanic who looked at it for two seconds and said, "new radiator." I felt suspicious as this shop is known for unneeded repairs, so I went to another guy. This guy kept the car for a couple days, running all kinds of tests. No radiator problem, no leaky hoses. And he could NOT get the thing to overheat. He ended up doing a flush and adding some fluids, but basically said - "I can't see a problem with this car."

I then continued driving it with no problems. But I only drive it about 3 miles to and from work, so it's hard to tell. I've taken a few weekend trips since then without incident - some up to 2 hours away. No problems. But every once in awhile, lately, I'll get a little scent of water mixed with engine - the smell you get when a car overheats. Just a hint, though, and no actual overheating.

Well, today I headed up to the mountains again, and whammo. Same exact overheating problem returns.

Is it something caused by elevation (this mountain is about 4000 feet, and I'm usually at sea level.) Or is it the strain on the engine going uphill? (It's a twisty road, but well graded and navigable at 40 - 55 mph.

By the way, both times when the car overheated, it SUDDENLY shot up into the red zone, then just as suddenly went back to normal. Then....drive some more - Bang! it goes back up....then back down. Very weird. Almost as if it reaches a certain point and the flow is suddenly cut off or being splashed over the engine. (LOTS of steam.)

Any advice is much appreciated....

Response From jeep driver

you can also upgrade to an electric fan instead of the clutch fan witch will work better without pulling power from your engine so therefore you gain cooler running temp and gain horsepower, which is always a plus!!!!! you can buy an awesome upgrade kit which will replace the electric and clutch fans for three electric fans. for around 300.00 on ebay. I bought one for my 1995 jeep cherokee with 313,000 miles on it. it is well worth the money. also you can upgrade the thermostat for a lower temp. thats about a 6.00 fix!!!!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

A few things come to mind with altitude: There's a lot less air in the air to cool your radiator! Any uphill grade is a lot of load on the engine - load=heat.

Caloric value of water vs anti-freeze. Water wins big time for exchanging heat over anti-freeze -- lowering concentration with extremes helps but needs changing more often. Concentrations over 50% cause problems! Stronger is NOT better at all!

Pressure cap. Boilding points are seriously lower with less pressure. Water = 212F at sea level which is under 14.7 psi without knowing it. Properly working 15lb pressure cap adds 45F to temp before boiling and boiling liquids don't exchange heat for diddle.

Fan clutches: They lose about 10-15% of pulling power per year! Toss an old one for a quality thermostatic new one.

Those are the items that need to be perfect for higher altitude performance of cooling systems,
