How does the fan clutch and pulley assembly disconect from water pump shaft?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Read the thread! It's damn near four years old and the answer is there! It's near certainly left threaded,

T

Response From DanD

They are threaded on and most are (not all) also left thread.
Leave all the belts on to help hold the pump pulley find a wrench to fit the hexagon of the clutch drive and give it a good hard smack with a rubber mallet.
If you want it off to do a water pump check on the replacement pump whether the threads are right or left. You don’t want to be pounding on the wrench in the wrong direction that would raise the frustration level over the top.
LOL.

2006 E Seies cooling fan

Question From valleybusman on 2006 E Seies cooling fan

I am working on a 2006 E450 with automatic and 6.0 engine.Truck that is a stripped chassis vehicle has 117000 miles on her.A couple days ago the driver called me and said it over heated on him. I brought this vehicle back to the shop and checked the coolant level. Level was right up there. So I remembered not hearing the fan when it heated up.I used a scan tool and got a code that said couldn't communicate with the fan. This the KOEO test. So I started her up and ran a KOER test and again it said couldn't find fan.I also got one that said No.2 injector acting up.I unplugged connector and it showed power on the body side.If you know these rigs it's a B word to remove or even check out the fan.Any ideas on how to check before we dismantle the front end ? Hope you can help thanks

Response From Discretesignals

What is the trouble code number for the fan?

Response From valleybusman

I believe either 508 or 528

Response From Discretesignals

P0528

No signal from the fan speed sensor.

You going to need a high end scan tool to monitor the fan speed PID and to be able to actuate the viscous clutch valve.

If you don't see a fan speed signal, your going to have to use a lab scope or multimeter to troubleshoot the speed sensor circuit. You'll have to make sure that the hall effect has power and ground. Not sure if the hall effect sensor is a pull up or pull down design, so your going to have to unplug the fan speed sensor circuit to see what kind of voltage is on the speed sensor signal circuit with the PCM powered up. If you don't see any voltage, that means the hall effect sensor sends the square wave signal to the PCM. If you see a voltage, that means the hall effect sensor grounds the voltage from the PCM to generate the digital signal.

If your multimeter has frequency measurement capability, you can see what the frequency of the signal is. If you have a lab scope, you can see the actual signal and analyze the waveform.

With enough information from testing, you can figure out where the culprit is.

Response From valleybusman

Thank you for the reply...now where is the sensor ?I have a fluke 88v tester will that work ? also am using a Gyensis 3.0 scan tool Or am I better to let a dealer in on this ?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

The sensor is part of the fan clutch. You can make your checks from the connector at the fan clutch wiring harness or at the PCM itself.

Go to the manufacture side of the PCM using your scan tool and see if there are PIDs for the fan clutch and control valve duty cycle in the data stream. Also see if your scan tool can control the fan clutch from the special functions menu.

The meter should be able to check the fan clutch hall effect sensor power and ground. You might also be able to rotate the fan clutch really slow and watch the voltage change on the signal circuit from low to high. That would tell you if the hall effect sensor is functioning.

What is interesting is that you would think that Ford would have the fan clutch commanded to 100 % if the PCM didn't detect the fan speed signal. Weird.

Response From valleybusman

I wanted to than you for all your help here.i found the problem when I went to remove the stator. The wire fell off and you can see where the fan had hit a few times and pulled the harness out of the stator.thanks again

Response From Discretesignals

That may explain why the fan didn't go 100% when the PCM didn't see the speed sensor signal.

oh, I forgot to add before doing all those checks, it is good to do a visual inspection first...LOL.

Getting Fan Clutch off w/out "special tool"

Question From videomann! on Getting Fan Clutch off w/out "special tool"

Hello eveyone... it's been a while ... I'm trying to change the water pump. The prob that I am having is getting the fan clutch off of a 97 Chevy Blazer 4.3 liter V6. I need to know how to remove it without the special tool. I tried Autozone and they never have anything... The tool that I did rent from them is not even for Chevy's it's for Fords... What to do? All help and suggestions are appreciated!!!!!

Response From Hammer Time

Here's a trick that usually works for me.

Leave the belt on for the moment. Find the longest chisel you can and a heavy hammer. Position the chisel along the left edge of the nut and hit it sharply with the hammer. The nut will break free rather easily and then spin right off. You can tighten it the same way.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

I've never done it by hand. I usually use an air hammer with a blank driver, just a couple of raps in the right direction will usually loosen them.

I suppose if you had a long enough bar where you could get a good swing with a hammer (without hitting anything else) would work.

Oops....just noticed the time........you probably already have it off by now

F-250 7.3 litre diesel fan clutch

Showing 3 out of 5 Posts | Show 2 Hidden Posts
Question From Swooshski on F-250 7.3 litre diesel fan clutch

I've got a 96 F-250 7.3 litre diesel that needs a new water pump. I bought the pump but can't find the right wrenches to remove the fan clutch. I've rented 2 different sets of clutch wrenches from area auto supply stores but nothing seems to fit. I am the original owner of this truck so I know nothing has been messed with previously.

I see found some wrench sets online but I'm afraid to order ... based on my experience today with the kits not having the correct sizes. I have never messed with a fan clutch before and found this to be very very frustrating. Can someone give me some advice on this?

Also, the sticker on my fan shroud says "right had threads on fan clutch". If I understand it correcly, that is just normal threads and the nut needs to be turned counter-clockwise to losen the clutch (one I find some way of holding the pulley).

My only other option at this point is to return the kits & pump to get my deposit back. Put the thing back together and take it to a dealer .... I really don't want to do that.

Any advice?

Response From Tommy Tucker

Hello, Right hand threads means that to take off the nut, ( loosen ) You TURN THE NUT TO THE RIGHT , CLOCK WISE TO TAKE OFF, JUST THE OPPOSITE OF NORMAL, this is because the motor turns CLOCK WISE and if the nuts came off COUNTER CLOCK WISE they would get Loose by themselfs ! ! Now to hold the Fan from turning on You, there are two ways that I know of, well there are more then that, but these two work most often, have two wrenches of the size of the nuts, hold the one wrench to keep the fan from turning and use the other to take off the nut, or I believe there are 5 ( five ) nuts on Your Fan Clutch, put a wrench in an angle between two nuts on oppsite sides of each other, make it long so it will ( the Wrench ) CATCH it self on some other part of the motor when it does, it will hold the Fan Still, as for the right size wrench for the job, Get CHANNEL LOCKS FOR YOUR WRENCH, and REMEMBER to TURN IT CLOCK WISE., PRETTY SURE THAT WILL WORK, I'VBE DID IT MANY TIMES, Tommy T.

Response From Swooshski

Thanks, but I eventually got the darned thing off.

Even though there is a sticker on my fan shroud that says "fan clutch has right hand threads" they were not. Thank you Ford.

What I found was the tool kits available for loan from the auto parts did not have the proper size wrenches for the 7.3 diesel, even though the labels on the kits said they would. Again, thank you to the manufacturer.

Neither of the suggested means were feasible or practical. I was able to use a tool out of one kit that held 2 of the bolts on the pulley, but had to weld me up a 'wrench' that was thin enough to fit between the pulley and the clutch itself. Once I figured out that the clutch did not have right-hand threads on it things moved along OK and I'm back on the road.

Thanks to those that replied.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the followup on this. I've never touched the diesel for water pump or clutch but have the other Fords that were different there than most. All were what I call "LEFT HAND THREADS" meaning the nut or bolt will advance or tighten turning it counter clockwise. The brand name "Channel Lock" made pliers that did work for this. Before that they were nick-named "water pump" pliers.

It was mentioned already but I expound further. Thread that are left handed have been for a reason especially in items that spin. The resonance of the spinning will urge a fastener to either tighten or loosen depending on the direction it spins.

Lug nuts and bolt used on left side of cars and even some bearing nuts in hubs were purposely made left handed such that if not tight enough they really didn't get looser by themselves. Chrysler, some Olds and others made whole lines of cars like this but the trend wasn't univeral so a lot of snapped lug nut/bolts resulted and the practice has ceased.

The left hand threaded items still exist. Now I find most are for electric motors for fans and the squirrel cage type fans for blower motors.

Just for the interest of it I'll try to post some pics when I can get some good pics of some nuts and bolts that are embossed right on them with the letters L.E.F.T. Smile - we couldn't do this today and fit in three or more different languages

T

Response From way2old

We use very large channel locks to hold pulley and another set to loosen the clutch.

1986 Ford Mustang 6 cyl.

Question From joestwin on 1986 Ford Mustang 6 cyl.

Hi,
We have an unusual problem with our daughter's Mustang. It was constantly running hot and overheating in traffic. We pulled the thermostat and replaced it several times. We have also changed the hoses and installed a new high performance radiator. As long as we leave the thermostat out the car is fine. Each time it is installed, it runs hot.
Winter is upon us and she now has no heat. With the new radiator and no thermostat, the water temp doesn't get much above 120.
Suggestions?

Response From steve01832

Pick up another thermostat and gasket at the Ford Dealer. I have had problems in the past with aftermarket thermostats not opening when they should. When I replaced it with a factory stat, it worked fine.

Steve

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It's not good to run without a thermostat but you do have a problem.

Just a thought---- could the thermostat be in upside down? That would cause crazy problems. If it can behave without one it sure should behave with one, T

Response From joestwin

No, it's always been right side up.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Another thought (watch out as I only have one brain cell left) but this could be a bad fan clutch. It's been so cold here I don't even need a fan!!

If this car uses that and you haven't replaced it yet it wouldn't hurt, T
