1986 Volvo with some problems!

Question From jsfm3 on 1986 Volvo with some problems!

240 Stationwagon
not sure
My volvo stationwagon has been running smoothly until recently when a burning like smell came from somewhere under the hood while driving. Also, when accelerating at a stop sign or light, you can hear the engine rev up, but the car doesn''t move right away. This also occurs when i give it gas while in motion. It feels like i am switching gears in a manual car, but it is an automatic. Idea's, suggestion's???

thank you!

Sounds to me like you got a massiive trans fluid leak somewhere annd ran out of fluid. Check your trans fluid level and if it's low, find out where the leak is. It may be just one of the cooler lines going up to the radiator. The smell may indicate that it's leaking on to the exhaust pipe somewhere.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Plenty for age and miles so a first guess is something to do with PCV system which can cause erratic idle, vacuum loss or erratic and oils getting on hot exhaust making for odor.

Essentially I'd check for vacuum leaks and go from there with what found,

I used Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner, now my Volvo smell like gas.

Question From maxhuf on I used Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner, now my Volvo smell like gas.

Year of vehicle: 1989
Make of vehicle: Volvo
Model of vehicle 760 GLE
Engine size: 2.8L
Mileage: 194,000

I recently added the Chevron Techron Fuel System Cleaner to a full tank of gas. Upon reading the instructions however, I realized I should have added the cleaner to an empty tank and then refueled. A half tank (and a day later) my Volvo is starting to smell like raw gas. I checked and there are leaks. Is the smell of gas normal after using an fuel system cleaner?

Response From Hammer Time

You did nothing wrong or harmful. If your smelling fuel, there is some other issue that needs to be found.

Response From maxhuf

Nothing to do with the fuel mixture? Prior to the additive there was no smell.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You could get a different odor out of the exhaust, although i have never noticed one from Techron. If you smell raw fuel, that is a leak somewhere.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This is one of very few additives I do use and never had it cause a problem. Anything of the sort is best in moderation. As HT said if you are smelling raw fuel there's a leak to be found and if that product caused it I'd sooner say it was a lurking problem to begin with,

Exhaust Residue

Question From pstkm on Exhaust Residue

I just bought a 2002 volvo S40 Turbo with 98,000 miles. I have noticed exhaust residue/soot on the back of the car. No sign of vehicle burning oil or any smoke from tail pipe. Any ideas?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

There isn't normally much out the tailpipe to make soot without a problem. Also the exhaust if original rarely can show it on the car unless bent or replaced and doesn't exit at the right spot,

volvo failed NOx

Question From kelk44 on volvo failed NOx

My volvo failed NOx reading.Allowed 848 and read 1107-50/15 test allowed 937 and read 1188.Do I need to replace EGR valve? They said getting to much heat..... Please help!!!!!!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

New EGR may fix it but hard to be sure. Spray some carb cleaner at it at idle and see if it changes the idle speed. Go easy with that test as the cleaner can flash on hot parts.

General tune-up stuff helps too. Go in with a cooler engine and don't run your A/C on the way as heat is a major cause of high NOx. It's odd but the EGR puts a small amount of exhaust gas into incoming air/fuel and that cools the combustion temp.

Is the car running well in general? Little problems can really set off emissions. How old is the car? Does it have any codes stored or CEL on or on momentarily lately?

Strange noise at 1000 RPM

Question From zheli on Strange noise at 1000 RPM

Hi guys!

I just replaced the muffler and resonator on my old volvo. The car is much quieter now but there is a strange noise when engine runs around 1000 rpm (at any gear). It is louder inside the car than outside. Here are some videos shooting at different parts of the exhaust system and I cannot notice any significant vibration: https://www.youtube.com/...MC0pALOwfXL7u9hQY6Xp Could anyone tell me where else I should look at? Thanks!!

Response From Hammer Time

Look for any point where the exhaust system is touching the frame or body without rubber insulation.

Response From zheli Top Rated Answer

Thanks! I will have a look! The car is a 88' 745 volvo (same exhaust used on 740). Both the resonator and muffler are hung under the car with rubber hangers. But I can think of one place that may touch the car frame (the connecting pipe between them).
