During operation, an internal combustion engine produces a lot of exhaust gases. These gases stem from the ignition of the fuel/air mixture in the cylinders. In order for an engine to run efficiently, and make the most power possible, these gases need to be removed from the cylinder as quickly as possible, and ejected from the engine and out the vehicle’s exhaust system. An exhaust manifold is a component which is connected to the cylinder head and which is responsible for gathering up exhaust gases and routing them to the exhaust pipe. Each cylinder has a tube which collects gas when the exhaust valve is opened, and these tubes join together at the base of the manifold. Since the gas being released by the exhaust valve is under pressure, it creates what is called the exhaust pulse. Essentially, the low pressure towards the rear of the exhaust system works to pull the high pressure gas out of the cylinder, which allows for fresh oxygen to enter more quickly. This results in more power being produced. Exhaust manifolds are designed in a manner that increases the flow of gases out of the cylinders by carefully manipulating this pressure differential. Exhaust headers are a type of manifold which attempts to create an even greater exhaust gas velocity by varying the length of the manifold tubes. By fine-tuning the diameter and size of each tube, and reducing gas expansion, the headers can pull a larger volume of gas by creating a more effective exhaust pulse.
