The EGR or exhaust gas recirculation valve is a component of a modern vehicle’s pollution control system. This valve is used in order to take some of the engine’s exhaust gases and divert them back into the engine, where they mix with the incoming fresh air and fuel mixture. While this might sound counterproductive, there are a few principles at work in this system that make it a desirable addition to an engine. The first is that by injecting these gases into each cylinder, peak combustion temperature is lower than it normally would be. This reduces the formation of nitrogen oxides, which are some of the most significant polluters. There are also a number of other heat-related chemical reactions which occur through the use of the EGR and which help to improve the overall efficiency of the engine, in terms of reducing energy lost to heat, increased manifold pressures, and less fuel wastage. An EGR system can also be located inside of an engine. This is done by using a cylinder design which keeps a portion of exhaust gases inside the cylinder head after combustion, allowing them to be burned up with the next combustion cycle. Diesel engines have an EGR system which introduces a larger amount of cooled exhaust gases than gasoline engines, since diesel engines can run with a greater amount of extra air present. Since diesel engines produce a greater amount of nitrogen oxides than gasoline motors, EGR valves are very important when it comes to cleaning up diesel emissions.
