'95 Nissan Pathfinder stalls when letting off gas

Question From itsmi11ertime on '95 Nissan Pathfinder stalls when letting off gas

I have a '95 Nissan Pathfinder (6 cyl; 4 wheel drive) -- My car stalls whenever I let off the gas or step on the break. If I'm stopped at a light it sometimes idles and vibrates at the zero RPM--then proceeds to stall. It also produces a funny smell when this happens. I took it to the shop and it was deemed that nothing was wrong with it. I've done the fuel treatments and replaced the gas cap and neither has worked--any ideas as to what may be wrong?

Note: this has been going on for a few weeks now and it only happens when the car is warm. The O2 sensor has already been replaced and we have reset the computer--no dice.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Sounds like you could have an EGR valve sticking open at idle. This could be due to chunks of carbon getting caught in the pintle, a defective EGR valve or a defective vacuum control solenoid.

I would say the next time it happens at a place where you can work on it, shut it off and immediately remove the EGR valve and inspect it to see if it's stuck open or not.

Response From itsmi11ertime

What do I do if it isn't? If I take it out now (I haven't driven the vehicle since last night but it was all shades of awful last night) would I be able to tell if that was the issue? Or should I just drive it around for a little bit and then take a look? Maybe even just clean it out to see if that helps without driving and experiencing the issue?

If it still keeps stalling and that isn't the case what should I look for?

Response From Hammer Time

The problem needs to be present when you shut it off for you to find anything.

/90 nissan micra, stalls while in low idle

Question From broham on /90 nissan micra, stalls while in low idle

After the car is warmed up it has a low idle and stalls when the car slows down or is at a stop. ANy ideas? Thank you!!

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

This is a US based forum and your vehicle isn't sold here in the states. we don't have access to service information.

Might be able to give you some advice if you could tell us what type of fuel system your vehicle has. If is carburated, check for vacuum leaks or stuck open EGR valve. If there are no vacuum leaks and the EGR valve is good, you could have a carb issue such as clogged idle air bleeds or some other idle circuit issue.

Response From broham

Oh right! USA Based, sorry about that. I'm obviously from canada. I am grateful for your advice regardless. It is carburated. I will check those things out! thank you

Response From Hammer Time

We have some people from Canada that should be able to help you when they check in. We are just volunteers helping in our spare time.

What is going on now:

We disconnected the vacuum hose and it worked well no problems till this past Monday.. now it's back to the same story.. but now it runs funny even if it's not warmed up yet. What should my next move be?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

It should be the same move that you were given in the first answer. Remove the EGR valve and inspect it to see if it's closed all the way.
