2002 mazda protege5 engine stops periodically for no apparent reason

Question From Gcrowder64 on 2002 mazda protege5 engine stops periodically for no apparent reason

The diagnostics said replace spark plugs and tune-up. That did not help. The dealer then said the diagnostics said replace the coil. When lower on fuel the engine stops more frequently.

Response From amarie66 Top Rated Answer

I forgot to mention too, I was told to check the egr valve. In the older protege5s the egr valve is apparently notorious for getting clogged with carbon and causing stalling. If it is dirty and clogged you can try cleaning it in brake cleaner overnight, but if the dirt is too built up you might have to replace it if its the problem.

Response From nickwarner

he hasn't gotten back with codes in a week, so I doubt we'll be hearing much more on this one

Response From amarie66

I was having this exact same problem with my protege5. Is yours an automatic? When idling my car would shudder, and stall, completely shutting off. I was getting the engine code p0300-random misfire. Turns out I needed the engine coils replaced. They retail at about 95 each, but take 5 min to do.
Hope this helps

Response From Discretesignals

Was the dealer able to duplicate the stalling condition?

Response From nickwarner

What are the exact code numbers? Most parts stores will scan them for free and tell you what numbers are coming up.

ERG valve on Mazda Protege

Question From crousey on ERG valve on Mazda Protege

The check engine light on my 2002 Mazda Protege came on. I took it to the dealer, they cleaned the EGR valve but said it needed to be replaced. I am not having any problems with the car yet - but how long do I have before I do if I don't take immediate action? I do not want to fork over $350 right now. Can I wait until after the holidays?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Don't wait forever but you should have some time if the car is running well. Are you interested in doing this yourself? Shouldn't be a tough job, and you can buy the part new for less than mentioned I'm sure, T

Response From crousey

Thanks Tom,
Yes, there is the possibility of doing it myself (well, my husband actually) if it is simple enough. He is knowledgable with cars. How do I go about getting instructions on how to do it?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Look at the part. Most have a vacuum hose and a wiring plug and just two nuts or bolts to attach it. A new gasket would be in order too. I'd bet it's less than $100 bucks and a ten minute job. It may require some tools that get into tough places but if you are sure this is the problem you will be able to do this even if you have to buy some obstruction tools, T

1999 mazda 626 es V6 - Error codes P1131,p0133,p0040

Question From baddyfan on 1999 mazda 626 es V6 - Error codes P1131,p0133,p0040

I have a 1999 Mazda 626 ES V6, auto trans, FWD, and 91K miles on it. I have the Check Engine light on since a few weeks.

I have the following error codes using OBDII tool
P0133 - Heated oxygen sensor H02S RF circuit malfunction

P1131 - Heated Oxygen sensor Bank1, sensor1 (H02S11)

P0040 - EGR system leak detected

The car starts, and runs fine, no strange noises, or stuttering. Recently, I had the fuel pump replaced. Gas lid is closed tightly.

I would appreciate if someone could help me get a rough estimate for repairs. I'm trying to make a decision whether to get the repairs done or get a replacement car. Thanks very much!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Try spraying the outside of EGR area with carb cleaner and see if that changed idle. If no change then try cleaning the EGR. The pintle underside may not seal well?? If caked up sometimes they can be cleaned.

The EGR may be taxing O2 sensors and the O2 sensors are not the first problem but the result of another for now. Not sure why it said fault in circuit. Do see if it's at least plugged in properly and no burned wires,

T

Response From baddyfan

Thanks for the reply, Tom! I appreciate it. I will give it a try.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Do give it a try. Know that code readings vary in quality and info collected. Take them with some common sense and don't just toss parts at everything it found some "error" with too quickly but think it thru.

When it can't communicate you will get a code that, that area has an issue. Can be a dumb as being unplugged. One minor fault that makes an engine run improperly can tax other items so you can get multiple codes and it's only one problem. Some when ignored can cause real problems with items that could be saved if timely.

Do post back with any findings or changes in codes,

T

Troubleshooting the problem seemed beyond by abilities. I had a repair shop look at it. They indicated that the EGR valve may need to replaced. Its diaphgram seemed to be faulty. They also said that cleaning will not resolve the issue. EGR valve is around $350 + $230 labor. I was also able to locate the part at a salvage yard for a fraction of the cost and found someone that is willing to install it for around $100 I am wondering if it is worth replacing it for a car with 91K miles. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks again!

86 Mazda engine dying.

Question From nreves on 86 Mazda engine dying.

i have a 1986 mazda b2000 truck with a 2.0 engine and 5 spd transmission with 146k mi. the problem im having is when i come to stop or slow down really slow the rpms go way lower than normal (~500)/engine will sometimes die on me. when i start out to work in the morning its not bad or doesnt happen, but it gets worse the longer i drive it like when it gets warmed up something goes wrong. a previous problem that i had was it wouldnt start at all but replacing the ignition switch fixed that problem. i thought it might be the fuel filter so i bought one but am currently unable to find it on the truck to replace it. any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Response From Hammer Time

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Response From nreves

ok thanks, now the question is where can i find a picture or diagram that shows me where that is?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You know, I'm going to have to back up on that. Your engine is carbureted and I assumed it was fuel injected.

You may have something like a stuck EGR valve or just some internal carb problems. It's really going to have to be inspected.

Response From nreves

so would i be able to clean the egr valve and see it that does anything? a new one is pretty spendy.

Response From Hammer Time

Sure, just remove it and see if the pintle is fully seated. If it is, leave the vacuum hose off when you put it back on to see if anything changes.

1998 Mazda 626 idles rough. How can I adjust idle speed?

Question From plsmoothy on 1998 Mazda 626 idles rough. How can I adjust idle speed?

Hi community. I drive a '98 Mazda 626LX 2.0L 4Cyl with 140,000 miles. The car idles at approximately 650 RPM. At this RPM, I get an intense vibration in the engine and throughout the car. Here's what I've done in an attempt to eliminate the problem. 1. Changed spark plugs/spark plug cables. 2.Checked engine compression... compression good. 3.Removed fuel injectors and had them ionically cleaned. 4.Checked for error codes ... none found. 5.Replaced fuel filter.

At this point I'm considering changing the motor mounts. Before I do that however, I want to increase the idle speed by 100 RPM or so. Can anybody shed some light on how to go about in doing this? Also, any other insights are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Response From Sidom

At that mileage it is very possible it's your motor mounts. To verify this if you put a floor jack under the engine & slightly jack up engine (with a piece of wood or something so as not to damage the pan) to take take the weight off the mounts & your vibration goes away( while the engine is running), then it's the mounts for sure.....

Response From plsmoothy

Don't want to beat a dead horse here but is there absolutely no way to reprogram the computer to increase the idle speed? An increase of 100-150 rpm's seems to make all the difference in the world.

Thanks again.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

plsmoothy; The idle spec for your car is 550-800rpm, so as Hammer stated, it is within specs. And, as he said, the idle speed is computer controlled. If the engine is running rough and is within idle specs, you have an underlying problem that is causing the roughness. Changing the motor mounts won't fix the roughness. May even make it more noticeable.
Have you had the injectors ohm checked? Have you cleaned the throttle body and IAC? Compression test? Valve clearances? So many things can contribute to this.....No easy answer.

Response From plsmoothy

I'm in the process of cleaning the throttle body and idle air control (AIC) now. I noticed there is quite a bit of a tar like substance in the intake manifold. Should I clean the intake manifold since I'm already in the vicinity?

I took the advice of Sidom and loosened up a couple of the motor mounts, put a jack under the oil pan and lifted the engine. The vibration felt pretty much the same. Does that prove that it's not necessarily the motor mounts.

In addition there is something that I forgot to include in my original post. The idle gets rougher when I turn on the Air Conditioner. The vibration gets really intense.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Response From Sidom

Sounds like the intake is pretty dirty. Cleaning the throttle plate is good but most shops offer services that run cleaning solvent thru the intake & also disable the fuel system & run it thru the rail also to clean the injectors.

The method I told you about you don't loosen any of the mounts, just put a just under the pan w/wood & a couple of pumps to support the motor & run it. On the ones I've done that had bad mounts this would either eliminate the vibration or make a noticable improvement.

Now I'm assuming you've check all the mounts & none are broken. This method is only to check mounts that have hardened & are transmitting the engine vibration..

Hi there,

I have a 1993 and the same problem. To adjust the idle the computer needs to be re-adjusted. Place a wire between TEN en GND inside the diagnoses connector. Adjust the idle with the flathead screw on the right top side of the t throtthle body. Rotating counterclockwise will rise the RMP. Turn the car of and remove the wire. I have tried it and the RPM are now 950 rmp but it is still a little bit rough. Also cleaned the EGR valve, clean the IAC valve, cleaned the injector etc....

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Cleaning the throttle body and idle control motor may help.

Response From Hammer Time

Loren, The idle is right where it should be. He just thinks if he runs it higher, the vibration will go away.

Response From Hammer Time

The idle for that car is entirely controlled by the computer and not adjustable in any way.

If your getting a vibration, the motor mounts will likely cure it.
