Response From zmame

Is there an engine light on?

Response From jah215

NO...I DID HAVE IT ON BUT IT WAS THE EGR VALVE AND IT GOT REPLACED....BUT THE SAME PROBLEMS STILL OCCURING BEFORE THE EGR VALVE PROBLEM

Response From zmame

Sounds like a missfire, plugged cat, egr stuck partialy open, etc etc could be many things. if you had a engine light on could lead you in right direction its kinda hard to say without looking at it.

Response From jah215 Top Rated Answer

AFTER THE EGR VALVE WAS REPLACED...THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON THEY SAID IT WAS SUMTHIN WRONG WITH THE ENTIRE COMPUTER SYSTEM...SO THEY CHANGED IT ENTIRELY AND IM STILL HAVING THE SAME DAMN PROBLEMS...BUT THANKS SO MUCH...I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I NEED TRANSMOUNTS...WOULD THAT BE THE CAUSE?

2008 Hyundai Verna CRDI : Poor pickup

Question From vsgiri on 2008 Hyundai Verna CRDI : Poor pickup

Hi everyone,
I own a Hyundai Verna CRDI (1.5L), and I have been observing low pickup issues for a while. The car has run around 60000kms. I'm trying to narrow down the problem myself - so I bought an OBD 2 scanner and coupled it to my tablet with Torque Pro.

One thing that caught my attention is the EGR. When engine is idle, the EGR commanded is 5.4% (should have been 0 - but 5% is probably good enough). However, my EGR error rate is 99.7%. This didn't seem normal. Now when I rev up the engine to around 2000rpm, I see that the EGR % is going to around 50-60% while the EGR error suddenly drops to -99%.

The observation tells me that the EGR is in open loop control, however either the EGR valve position sensor is faulty or the valve itself could be stuck open?

Can someone guide me on how I can go about diagnosing the problem further?

I'm a bit of an enthusiast, but I haven't got my hands dirty yet - are there any other experiments I can run using Torque to diagnose this further?

The scanner shows that no error codes were registered. Also I don't see black smoke - not through my rear view mirror at least. Efficiency has gone down as well - but I'm really concerned about the pickup.

The problem has been around for a year and started off quite abruptly when I felt I lost some power while driving on the highway. Ever since, the problem has persisted. Sometimes, all of a sudden the car comes alive and has excellent pickup. After an overnight rest, it returns to normal. The problem is quite confounding. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks,
vsgiri

Response From Discretesignals

This forum mainly deals with stateside vehicles, so advice may be limited.

EGR won't cause loss of power on acceleration. The EGR valve should never be open at idle or while reving the engine in park or neutral. The command and error values your seeing on your scan tool may not be right due to software bugs in your tool. If the error was that much when the PCM was actually commanding the valve it would certainly set an EGR code.

Response From vsgiri Top Rated Answer

Thanks for your response. Would you mind sharing some ideas on how I could approach solving the poor pickup problem? Could it be related to the MAF sensor/fuel flow/pressure? Any parameter from the scan tool that might help diagnose this problem? What would be very helpful is some approximate range of values of parameters under idle/load/cruise conditions so at least I can know if something is really off. Right now I'm hunting in the dark. From what you mention, it appears I should set aside EGR for the moment?

Thanks in advance once again for your help.

Help, I'm a 19yr old girl and my mechanic gave up on my car

Question From ldof87 on Help, I'm a 19yr old girl and my mechanic gave up on my car

2000 Hyundai Sonata, 68000 miles.
My car has been acting up for quite some time now. Here's what it does:
***It shakes quite a bit when its in drive. Only time it doesn't shake is when its in neutral.
***The check engine light has been on for probably a year or so now. My mechanic got it to go off for a day or two but then it came back.
***Sometimes as I'm taking off, my car looses power and it almost feels like there's no gas going through it. The RPM's sorta get stuck in place and my car is basically moving very very very slowly. It feels like its stuck in gear or something.
***To get it moving right, I either have to let go of the gas a lil and then step on it again. Or I have to "really" step on the gas which causes my car to "instantly" take off. I say instantly 'cause it literally accelerates like crazy if I do this (it causes your head to jerk back a lil). When ever I use this approach, the RPM's usually almost red line and then it shifts gears and drives fairly normal after that.
***The problem happens very often lately but it used to mostly happen whenever I was going up hill.
***I've also noticed that now that its acting up more, it seems to burn up gas alot faster. I'm at the gas station quite a bit considering I'm driving a 4 cylinder car.
***My mechanic changed the sparkplugs on it and thinks it has something to with them still. But he says he can't be sure of whats wrong with it. He has tried plugging it in to the "computer" (sorry, I'm not sure of what this machine is called exactly) to try and see if it'll tell him what's wrong but apparently it wont tell him anything is wrong.

So my mechanic pretty much told me to try taking it to someone else.

***Any ideas as to what's making my car act this way???***

I'd greatly appreciate any ideas, tips or any help you can provide me.
Maybe a certain shop that specializes in Hyundai cars or a shop that is fair priced and near my home. (I live in Southern California in the city of Ontario)

Thanks In Advance

a good mechanic never gives up sorry had to say that i would have him to do a compression test on all cyliders possible timing problem possible computer fault and fuel pump but do need that code even if it is a faulse code may the power of the hemi be with ya sincerily Tj

Response From Tom Greenleaf

A shop shouldn't give up as said. What does happen is there can be problems they don't deal with but should tell you who does! ........... Or send it out themselves to others in the trade, T

Response From MartianBunny Top Rated Answer

Hey girl what's ya doing down there?

Since it seems to run with power with the pedal to the floor I would look for the egr valve. Take a small hammer (remember I said a small hammer) and rap the manifold where the egr valve is mounted. See if this improves your idling when in gear & not moving.

The egr valves stick open from just a little bit making them hard to start cold to moderate making cars shake, to wide open letting the engine start with foot to floor but not idle.

If valve is plugged big time the hammer won't reseat it. But this is usually a great test for rough idling & hunt & seeking & shaking.

Get the code from the car. Some places do that for free, T

Question From OldManRiver on Hyundai Erratic

All,

My 1999 Hyundai Elantra is having problems. It has lost all acceleration and when cold, will not hardly get up and go at all. The "check engine" light starts flashing in the middle of trying to accelerate, and the engines misses and sputters.

I think it is one of the sensors, but have no idea what to look for.

blinking engine light means your cat is burning up so maybe you have a plugged cat that would cause poor acc and fine idle and the engine light

Response From OldManRiver

All,

New coils and a tune up fixed it. Mostly the coils. Found out these dual coils are problematic.

Easiest place to start would be to check fuel pressure.. you may have enough pressure to run at low rpm's but not enough at high rpm's under a load

engine light flashing due to the missfiring

Sorry dude,

Not the problem. A friend thinks it is the EGR valve/sensor or something like that. Actually I think you thought I loose at high speed when it is crawling, sputtering through intersections as 2-5 mph and missing signal lights that has me concerned. Problem is much worse when the engine or car is cold.

Car accelerates well above 40mph, unless I really tromp on it, so highway traffic is fine. Any accessive "foot" in the accelerator shuts it down. I have to rock the accelerator to get going and if I happen to be on a hill going up and get stopped I'm in trouble. Actually the break over in operation of the engine is between 35-40 mph based on whether I am accelerating on the level, downhill, or uphill, but once the break over point is reached the car lunges into action and starts working right.

I used to have all the manuals for the car, then it was stolen and the thieves took my manuals, so will need links to online manuals to locate anything under the hood. Course I've checked and replaced the plugs, wires, etc to no avail.

Thinking about locating all the sensors, one by one, by following the wiring pulling each and cleaning, as maybe that will help. What do you think?

Thanks!

As zmane stated, a blinking check engine light indicates a misfire condition. Of course, there are a multitude of reasons that can cause a misfire. From your symptoms, it sounds like it is overfueling. By feathering the throttle, you aren't giving it more fuel, you are giving it more air. Shouldn't be called a gas pedal. Should be called an air pedal. Pull the spark plugs and take a look for fouling.

I think everyone is reading too fast, because you missed the part where I said I replaced the plugs and wires.

Also I know it is a sensor/computer issue as symptoms are those of an older car with timing advance/retard issues.

Car idles and runs fine above 2K RPM, but misses like crazy below that, which means the sensor or computer ckt that retards spark, when at lower speeds is not functioning correctly, so the erratic firing, sputtering and bucking, and thus no power or acceleration.

On highway car is fine, so just need to fix this lower RPM issue.

Thanks!

Uh, there are other things that will cause a misfire besides spark plugs and wires. Retarded or advanced timing won't cause a misfire unless the timing is waaayyy off. When's the last time you had the injectors cleaned? (and I'm not talking about the snake oil one puts in the gas tank) Or, a fuel filter replaced? A lean condition can cause a miss, whether it be from a partially plugged or faulty injector, or a restricted fuel filter. Have you had it scanned for codes? A knock sensor can cause timing to retard, but wouldn't explain the misfire. Hyundai's have a problem with coils, also.
