Question From goldenld on error 46 1991 honda civic

What a nightmare. All indications pointed to a faulty EGR valve. Took it to my machanic friend, "no EGR valve" He did manage to dig up "error code 46" under the carpet on passengers side. No luck...finding out what that means on the I net. Please help/advise

Response From Double J Top Rated Answer

Hi

Did some research...I can find a chart that goes up to code 20...then it say this....

  1. If a code or codes other than those listed in this section are indicated, substitute a known good ECU and recheck.
  2. When the Check Engine Warning Light and the Self-Diagnosis indicator are on, the backup system is in operation. Substitute a known good ECU and recheck.
  3. In either case above, if substitute ECU corrects the problem then replace the original ECU.
So that leads me to believe the electronic control unit is faulty.....

But thats just a guess......

JIM

Response From way2old

Not much more help, but here is all the codes I can find for it. There is no 46. Also what do you mean by digging it up under the passenger side carpet?

http://www.troublecodes.net/honda/hondadtc.shtml

Response From goldenld

Thanks so much for your help. I stopped by the honda dealer, and they informed
me that there is no "error 46" code. Highest it goes is 41 or 43 and that indicates a bad O2 sensor. My friend, looked under the carpet on the passenger side under the dashboard, to come up with the "code". I tried the same myself outside the dealership....and could not or have any clue where he got it from.
Symptoms: Runs like a champ, as long as i don't approach idle speeds. If I do, the check engine light comes on and it runs like junk, unable to accelerate. I have found the quick fix, turn it off then turn it on at a stop or while driving and the light goes off, and runs like a champ again.
Thanks again for your help

Response From Indytech

Passages side under the carpet at the front firewall is the computer, and side kick panel is the diagnostic plug
which you have to jump, this will set of the MIL light which is in the computer under the carpet.
There is a little window where you can see the MIL flashing which you have to count to get the codes.Thats what he means to say .

Question From chantman on What to do about Honda Civic

Hi,

About 1.5 years ago I purchased a 2003 Honda Civic EX with 130,000 miles on it. Since then I've had to have the head gasket replaced twice (second time was due to a faulty head gasket used the first time). The check engine light is on and the code is a bad EGR valve. The ABS light is on, and I don't know why. Now the car is making a weird rattling noise coming from the engine... Also the alternator light flickers on and off.

Do I cut my losses and get rid of this? I worry about my safety. Thoughts? Thanks in advance

Response From Hammer Time

That's up to you. You don't even know what the car needs yet. You can't even know if it needs the EGR because nothing has been troubleshooted yet. Head gasket failures are usually the result of severe overheating so you can't blame the car for that.

Response From chantman

I understand that. However, I'm concerned that this engine rebuild due to the head gasket (twice) has caused a cascade of needed repairs. They shut the check engine light off and it came right back on with the egr valve code. The ABS light and rattling also concern me.

What does an egr valve replacement usually cost?

As I stated already, you don't know if you need an EGR valve right now. Just because you have a code related to the EGR doesn't mean the valve is bad.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Codes for an item don't mean you need that item at all. It means for any reason that circuit isn't working properly. ABS - who knows and you can get codes for that as well but need interpreting via a diagnosis.

Rattling, battery light? Possibly loose belt or at the end of it's adjustment extreme and or something loose with brackets or exhaust parts making noise but not the battery light.

If you are on the edge of swapping out this car for another then perhaps you should take it in and get a full diagnosis as to what it will take to fix up all the things you pointed out plus perhaps some you don't see or notice yet and decide to go for it and swap out for another. Another is no guarantee either but if used again have it checked out BEFORE purchase.

Only you can decided on keep this car or not but need to know how much it going to take to put it back in shape. Can't know all of that all at once without the diagnosis already suggested,

Question From comnavguy on 98 Accord 401 Insufficient EGR flow

This 1998 Honda Accord 3.0L V-6 with 164,000 miles is showing Code 401 EGR Flow Insufficient.

EGR valve has been replaced, and the code cleared. Fewer than 5 miles later the code came back up.

What else can be causing this malfunction ?

Response From Discretesignals

Might wanna call your local dealer and see if there is an open recall on your vehicle for the EGR system ports clogging (99-085). Have your VIN ready when you call.

Response From comnavguy

There were several recalls on various models, and ours was included.

We flushed with two carb cleaners, small brushes and high pressure air. All kinds of corruption was flushed out, and so far the code has not come back.

If it does, I'm going to take the EGR mount/manifold out and clean it from the inside.

Your direction was spot-on.

Thanks.

Response From Hammer Time

You really should remove the upper intake to access the carboned up holes. They usually have to be dug out with a screwdriver or drill because the stuff gets pretty hard.

Response From comnavguy

WHOPEE! That was the fix. It took some delicate twisting and turning to guide the cable through the port hole - it is verrrry small, but it worked. It was clogged almost completely, but it's now clear and the code is gone.

Put another feather in your hat.

Passed state inspection, and we can all breathe easier thanks to CARJUNKY! and Hammer Time.

You're welcome.

hammer hit it on the head, both 4 & 6 cyl's have the same problem with the egr ports getting plugged with carbon stopping egr flow.quick way to check is remove the valve & start the engine,if it idles its plugged,it'llbe loud from exaust escaping from the open port, now while its idling feel which port the exaust is
coming from and concentrate on the other port (vacuum port).now turn it off and soak the vacuum port with carb cleaner or even wd 40 and allow it to soak a bit then attack it with a small flexable cable ,i always use a ft. of speedo cable and a very slow drill to get down in the curvy port...works every time.. good luck

Response From nickwarner

Its not really necessary to explain a repair to someone who just reported that they FIXED the problem. If you just like to talk to hear yourself talk by all means write yourself a letter and mail it to yourself. You'd be your own pen pal, biggest fan and president of your own fan club all at the same time. Sounds like a lot of fun. You are dragging up old posts left and right, throwing out ideas at random that are already covered by other posters very clearly, and in general making yourself an irritation. I'd suggest treading lightly. Any moderator in here can at any time press one button and ban not only your user name but the IP address your computer uses to log online.

Including me.

Response From comnavguy

To say I'm confused by your post is an understatement.

If I've done or posted anything to "iritate" anyone here, I apologize.

I don't know what posts I've dragged up or what repair has been FIXED for which I've asked a repeated question.

I have had an EGR problem with a Ford for which the PTFE sensor was the problem.

If you'll meet me in email or do it here in an open forum and explain any problem I've caused, I'll change the way I do things. The last thing I want to do is iritate someone, particularly someone of whom I've asked assistance.

Please accept my apology.

Response From Hammer Time

I don't believe Nicks post was addressed to you. It was the post before his.

Response From comnavguy

I'm relieved, to say the least. I wear a guilty conscience most days...so it doesn't take much to make me look in the morror.

Thanks

Response From Discretesignals

If there is an open recall on this vehicle, then why didn't you let the techs at the dealer fix it. It's an emission's recall and you don't have to pay.

Response From comnavguy

Thanks. I'll give'em a call tomorrow, but what is (99-085)? I sprayed a can of carb cleaner in the port to see if that might help. I'll let you know about that tomorrow.

Response From Discretesignals

that's the recall number.

Honda Accord Engine Light On

Question From shuttp99 on Honda Accord Engine Light On

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help. I've got a 1999 Honda accord 1.8s and recently had a new exhaust down pipe fitted also the mechanic did some welding on the middle section but I found out that the battery was still connected. The problem is my engine light has come on and when at temperature the car idles really low and sometimes cut out completely. I naturally tried to use a diagnostic machine but found out this model doesnt have a diagnostic port which isn't very helpful. Some people are saying egr valve, oxygen sensor but the car has passed a emission test so please any ideas or solutions would be helpful.

Response From Hammer Time

Of course it has an OBD2 service port if it's a "99 but they didn't make an Accord with a 1.8 in "99 in the US so what do you have?

Did you install any kind of custom exhaust?

Response From shuttp99

Sorry I should of specified its the European model from the uk and no the exhaust is standard

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I'm not sure how that one is built but on the American version the data link connector is above the left kick panel. If it's not there, we probably won't be able to help you because most everyone here is from the US.
