egr valve

Showing 4 out of 4 Posts
Question From roblee on egr valve

My '04 Ford F350 was running rough, had a friend hook a computer to it and it diagnosed the egr valve as being bad. I bought an egr valve, but I'm not sure where it is located under the hood and exactly how to remove and replace. HELP!!

Response From way2old

What was the EXACT code number of the code?? If it was a P0401, the valve will not cure it. More than likely it will be the DPFE sensor. Let us know.

Response From roblee

what is that sensor for and where is it located on the truck, also the truck is diesel.

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

Still need the exact code number so we can research it for you. All I am doing now is guessing. This can get expensive by guessing on parts. Post back the codes and we can help you lots more.

Question From sara_beth on Ford Mustang V6 4.0

Code says EGR valve. I replaced that and the same code is coming up and my car isn't running very well. Any suggestions as to what it might be? The code is P0401

Response From way2old

Hello. Could you please post the exact code number so we cah help you? If you forgot the code number, many parts houses will read the code for free. Please write the code number down and post it here. Thanks

Response From Sidom

I'm gonna guess P0401 & changing the EGR valve didn't fix it...

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

I'm gonna guess, too. DPFE? and/or plugged passageway? Another guess: AutoZone?

Response From steve01832

Not to sound cruel, but we really need the year of the vehicle before we jump to confusions. lol
I do like the DPFE sensor. If I had a nickel for each one I sold, I'd be able to moderate here full time. lol

Steve

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Good point. I don't recall seeing a 4.0 in a Mustang.

Response From Hammer Time

They did have a 4.0 starting in 2005

Response From sara_beth

I am not the first owner of the car, so I have no idea what altercations were made to it. I do know that it is a 4.o

Response From sara_beth

That's right... it says insufficient flow. How do I fix this?

Response From Sidom

There is a few checks you need to run. 1st as everyone is saying is to make sure the EGR port isn't plugged. This is easy enough to check, while the engine is running just put a vacuum pump on the EGR valve, pump it up & engine should start to idle rough or die, (if you don't have a pump you can use a manifold vacuum line off the engine in place of that). If it does this indicates the port is clear & the valve is working. On Fords a common problem as Steve mentioned is the DPFE valve (differential pressure feedback egr) This valve basically sees if there is egr flow, when is goes out even though there is flow the valve doesn't see it & codes. There is a flow chart for this and maybe someone can post the chart. Even though the odds are high, I wouldn't blindly put one on without checking it out 1st.

Just so you know, I wasn't making light of your problem. My earlier post was just frustration at people at parts stores & who drive tow trucks who pass themselves off as diag techs where people take them at their word and waste alot of unnecessary money.

Response From sara_beth

I found out it is not clogged and there is no vacuum leak....I was told it might be the DPFE valve by a tech friend of mine, so I guess that's my next trial now that 2 people said the same thing. I did not teake offense to your comment. I appreciate the help. Thank you

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Sara; We need to know the trouble code. Insufficient flow could mean a plugged passageway between the throttle body and EGR or a faulty DPFE sensor, or the high temp silicone hose that connects to it. Even knowing the code, may take some diagnostics to determine which is causing the code.

Response From sara_beth

P0401

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

This code can be caused by insufficient vacuum to sensor, faulty sensor, faulty or plugged EGR valve, or faulty porting. If you can give us the YEAR of the vehicle we may be able to get more info for you.

Steve

Response From sara_beth

it's a 2002

Response From Hammer Time

The 4.0 wasn't listed as available in the Mustang in 2002

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

I'll be darned. We don't see too many of the 'newer' stuff. About the only ones that new are state motor pool rigs that we do.

Question From jo on 1993 ford probe 2.5

i have a 93 ford probe that keeps cutting off and the only way i can get it started again is take the negative cable off for a few minutes.can you tell me what the promblem may be thank you.

Response From Todd Norton

hi , need more info , when does it cut off ? hot or cold . driving or stopped , any recent work or repairs done , does it restart everytime , any check engine lites on so on .....Todd

Response From jo

yes, check engine light is on. ive checked the codes and they are 16,23,24 i believe one code is for the fuel pressure solenoid.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

16=EGR valve position sensor; 23 & 24= Heated O2 sensor. If the EGR valve is 'hanging' open, will cause a stall.
Is very common on Fords for a piece of carbon to become lodged between the pintle and seat, holding the EGR open. If this is the case, EGR gaskets with a screen are available which will eliminate this problem. The O2 codes should be checked, but could be a result of the EGR problem. (If the EGR is the problem).

Response From Todd Norton

I'll get you some info in the morning, anyone else got anything ?

Question From terry.justice on 2006 2.3L FORD ESCAPE WILL NOT REB UP

REPLACED MOTOR WITH A 2005 2.3L OUT OF A FORD FOCUS. STARTED MOTOR, IDLES ROUGH AND WHEN I PRESS ON GAS PEDAL IT WILL NOT EXCELLERATE.

Response From Sidom

I guess we should start off with what codes this thing is throwing...

Response From terry.justice

ANY SUGGESTIONS GUYS?

Response From chickenhouse

Put a gauge on the fuel pump pressure?

Response From terry.justice

It turns out that the harmonic balancer is different on a 2005. I switched the balancer that was on the 2006 and it runs fine. Who would have thought it.

Response From Hammer Time

Certainly not us since you never even mentioned replacing a balancer, never mind the wrong year.

Response From terry.justice

The balancer was on the 05 when I got it it had'nt been taking off I assumed it was in time. That's the only reason I did not change it and also the block and head is the same on a 2005 and 2006.

Response From terry.justice Top Rated Answer

Hooked computer to it one code came up EGR Valve.
Started vehicle there was about four codes that came up EGR Valve, Throttle position Sensor, Idle Air Control Valve and the Mass Air Flow Sensor. He cleared out codes. There were no other codes that came up. When we hooked up computer and started it the first time it revved up a couple of times and went back the way it was.

Question From mrrko on Acceleration Issues

2002
Ford
Escape XLS
V6 Engine
100,000+ Miles

After a inspection, took the car on the road and the EGR Valve Blew out with a hole in the side of it. I was also running on a Engine with a misfire. We fixed the misfire and also replaced the EGR Valve and the EGR solnoid. so when applying gas, the car gives little to no power, flooring it still gives about 20mph. Any idea what that may be?

Response From mrrko Top Rated Answer

Thanks for the information. I will try these steps as soon as possible and let you know the outcome.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Oh - look back as I added a pic of a neat tool I like that's handy for this that you might have missed,

T

Response From mrrko

What do you think about these

  • P1400 Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor circuit Low Voltage
  • P1401 Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor circuit High Voltage

  • Could any of these be the cause for the no acceleration?

    Response From Tom Greenleaf

That suggests what was suspected but know I'm retired and don't have the charts for what each code means nor exactly what it's trying to say. Post just those code #s like you just did under the section "Trouble Codes" or whatever we're calling it now,

    T

    Response From Tom Greenleaf

Guess and I hope you fixed all the damage from this "blow-out" with a hole! If you drove that any significant time with a misfire you may have clogged up converters which would cause loss of power. For now I'd check for exhaust restriction,

    T

    Response From mrrko

sounds like a good solution to me, I will take a look at the catalytic converter. Its possible. I will get back to you on that information. thanks alot

    Response From Tom Greenleaf

If you don't know how to check for exhaust restrictions or excessive back pressure hit back. Just looking will mean nothing,

    T

    Response From mrrko

Yes I would love some guidance on how to check. I appreciate the help.

    Response From Tom Greenleaf

Couple ways but start with an easy one:

Put a "T" in a known actual intake manifold vacuum line. Hook that up to a vacuum gauge and unless very high altitude it should read about 18 +/- . Now hold idle (no load) at 2,000 and it should read the same as at idle. If not there's a restriction but doesn't tell you where. Converters are the most likely but you don't know for sure.

Another test is to loosen exhaust before converter(s) and go for a quick drive. Noisy, but if power is up to par again it seriously points to restriction.

Start with the first and see what you find,

    T

PS: This is a fav tool of mine. Both a vacuum pump for testing things AND has stuff to put in lines with the gauge! Voila!
