Just can't shake this code

Question From Blacktop6ix on Just can't shake this code

Code P0401 EGR insufficient flow detected..
2004 Chrysler Pacifica 3.5L

I just replaced the EGR vavle and i am still getting this code after about 10 miles of driving after resetting the code... Any ideas where to go from here??

Response From Hammer Time

The code means low flow of the EGR system. Try activating the EGR at idle and see if the engine chokes out. If not, see if the passage is plugged up.

Response From Blacktop6ix

how exactly do i go about doing that? thanks

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

The EGR valve solenoid is power side switched. You can power the valve on the dark blue/violet wire with the engine idling. That should open the valve and cause the engine to run rough or stall.

Just a tip:

Our shop has been having a lot of problems with the aftermarket EGR valves for Chryslers. EGR valves and O2 sensors are things that should be bought from the dealer, so you don't run into problems.

Response From kev2

First look at freeze frame then with your scanner activate the EGR - the eng should run rough or stall, yes no?

Airbag light

Question From cousind on Airbag light

We have a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country with 69,000 miles and the airbag light stays on. We had it on the diagnostic and the mechanic couldn't get any codes on it. He and I are puzzled to what could be causing it to stay on. It starts and runs fine. We just had the EGR valve replaced but that shouldn't have anything to do with the airbag light. Do you have any answer we could check out?

Response From Double J

Check with your/any Chrysler dealer......call them with your vehicle identification number (VIN) and have them check for recalls for YOUR vehicle....

There is a recall for front air bag sensors cracking and allowing water to enter the sensors.

Just a thought...

Jim

Response From cousind

Hi Jim,
We knew about the recall and checked already and our VIN number was not in the recall. Our Van was built later apparently.
I appreciate the answer , thanks.

cousind

Response From Double J

Just wanting to ask .....has any other work been done prior to this light coming on or is it just in for the air bag light?
Has the vehicle been in an accident or have the bags been deployed?

CAUTION: AT YOUR OWN RISK...

INTERMITTENT CODE
A diagnostic trouble code that is not there every time the PCM checks the circuit is an intermittent DTC. Most intermittent DTC's are caused by wiring or connector problems. Defects that come and go like this are the most difficult to diagnose; they must be looked for under specific conditions that cause them. The following checks may assist you in identifying a possible intermittent problem:

  • Visually inspect related wire harness connectors. Look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded terminals.
  • Visually inspect the related harnesses. Look for chafed, pierced, or partially broken wire.

  • Response From cousind Top Rated Answer

    Jim.

I looked under the seats and hood and did not see anything loose or broken. I will try them again seeing I may have missed something.
The van hasn't been in a accident accept my son, who is learning to drive, bumped into a motorcycle that was parked but that was in the rear bumper and the little dent popped right back out as we were driving. The bags have not deployed. We do live in Michigan where there is a lot of salt on the roads. The light did not come on until a month ago and it was before we had the EGR repaired this week. We have run over potholes so something may have jarred loose. The engine light came on last spring and we put fuel injector cleaner in it and it went out.
Thanks for the information and I will certainly check out the wiring.

    cousind

    Response From Double J

    Just a thought..

Due to the complexity of the system and the dangers of working on them,it may be best to bring it in to Chrysler for diagnostics/repairs.

    Response From cousind

    Jim,
I was thinking the same thing because it sounds like a lot of time trying to find it and because of the complications of the air bag system.
    Thank for the advice.

    Cousind

    Response From Double J

    Definitely the way to go......

Post back and let us know the results...

    Thanks

Question From lennyd on MOTOR HAS HICKUPS

    1986 dodge ramcharger. 318ci. 2 bbl carb. 4x4
motor has hickups once it warms up and reaches 35-40 mph
indications told me it was the EGR valve
when I unbolted it and inspected it I noticed a crack across both holes. after research and waiting 2 days for replacement EGR valve I installed it with the # 9 washer
I need to back up here one time and tell you that there wasn't anyone and still isn't anyone that can tell me the right EGR valve that will fit my truck.there were no OEM #'s on the old EGR valve.
getting back, I took a guess at the #9 washer for it by looking at the old one and kinda matching it.
I took my truck for a test drive after the install and just when I thought it was fixed it started hickuping again.
    Questions:
could I not have the right EGR valve and can you help me find the # EGR valve I need
    or
do I need to chage the washer untill I get the right # washer in there for my truck....the new EGR valve came with about 10 washers with diff. numbers on them
or Could I fixed the cracked EGR valve and I have a problem somewhere else
    Please help

Just some thoughts on this vintage of Chystler engine: I had a lot of issues with these with sludge not allowing proper exhaust heat thru intake manifold. Not real hard but it was fixed with taking the whole thing out and cleaning it all up. That sludge was a surprise as it was happening to cared for engines?

EGR fix: If the crack is just a crack and not sealing anything right there, there are high temp JB-weld type products that will take full exhaust heat. Good stuff but of course not as strong as uncracked metal,

i bought a new EGR valve and installed it, but wasn't sure on putting the right number washer in it. i took a ,lets say educated guess going by the size of the old one..could it be the wrong number washer? jb weld is the BOMB...i used it on my boat and it works great.i keep it with me on the boat just in case. it's a miracle worker.
as far as the slug i will wait till i can put the truck down for a day and take your advice.
i was also told i might have blown the diapham in the carb. is that possible? thank you in advance for your knowlege and advice

    Response From Tom Greenleaf

Diaphragm in carb could be tested with spraying carb cleaner at suspect leak and if idle reacts it probably is leaking there. What diaphragm? Choke pull-offs and a carb kit should still be available for replace these if needed,

do you think by changing the washer in the EGR valve to a bigger or smaller hole will make the difference here?

I'm trying to recall this set up and the washer thing with this. The washers must be sized for different applications for this is the best I can guess. The whole EGR concept is the blend in some exhaust gas into the incoming mixture to REDUCE combustion temps which in turn lowers NOx output - this happens at part throttle, or supposed to happen only then and not at idle or wide-open-throttle. Ones that have been plugged or don't operate can make the engine "ping" at part throttle.

The different calibrations would have some impact on operations and alter emissions but probably wouldn't give you the Hick-ups that you have. No harm in trying though. Best to use some of the high temp gasket maker on the gasket there and or some high temp grease so you can re-use the gasket if you are going to test out the different sizes.

These engines were some of the best workhorses ever made and they hung on to that block as long as possible. They (Chrysler) always had some issues with carbs and I think that's where most of your problems are. With those and the gaskets, diaphragms on anything, carb cleaner spray finds the leaks,

tom, i can't thank you enogh for you knolege. i think your right i should lean more to the carb. will buy the rebuilding kit and try that.i really think i hit the gasket thing right on with the right size washer on the EGR valve. . your right on the workhorse of the 318 ci motor. this truck has some power. i just bought it about 4 weeks ago and the kid wanted $600.00 for it. i got it for $200.00 and haven't even put $100.00 into it. had ninor things wrong to pass inspection. little rust and it hasn't run in over 1 1/2 years. he put a new battery in it and he ran it till i bought it.was a old hunting truck and boy did the inside look like it. all cleaned up now and my wife even likes it. can pull my bass boat now without asking to use someone elses truck.
    thanks again.....lenny

Question From jeffneedshelp on 96 cirrus, stalls at every corner, revs first

1996 chrysler cirrus, car starts fine, engine idles fine, drives fine, but "every" time I come to a stop at a corner or anywhere, it revs really high for a half second then stalls..please help???

    Response From Hammer Time

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

    Response From jeffneedshelp

thank you for the info..I will give it a try...

I was checking vac hoses, pulled one off the egr transponder and it had sucktion but when I put it back the engin stalled....so, I took it off again, started the car and went for a ride, no more stalling, so, I replaced the EGR valve & transponder.......she runs great......thank you God...

    Response From Discretesignals

Which engine? Any trouble codes stored in the engine controller?

Before you stop, throw it into neutral and see if the engine stalls out.

    Response From jeffneedshelp

not sure what engin or codes, I will check tomorrow, I have been putting it in netral and keeping my foot on thegas before stopping, but now it wont restart after like 10 corners

    misfiring

    Question From sten on misfiring

    1998 Chrysler Sebring
    6 Cyl.
    119000 mi.

Just bought this car for my Daughter and have had the following done with no results. (paid $1500.00, but put $695.00 on sales slip to help with sales tax, got boned)

    Replaced plugs, rotor, dist. cap.
Checked out misfire Cyl 5, codes PO300 & PO305 found.
Leak down test (Good) for Cyl.5
    Compression Test 172
Replace lower and upper intake Gaskets
Swap Injector & Spark Plug 5 & 6 No Change.

I also had to replace the Cat. Converter because it was broken up inside, the guy at the Garage said that could have been from the injector at 5 shooting to much gas and overheating the Cat.
Garage said the computer seems as if it was replace at some time because there is a sticker on it that says it has to be programed and New cars do not have these stickers.
He suspects a wire could be the problem but says it could take days to find it. I'm already into this thing for $1200.00 (parts & labor) on the of the $1500.00 I paid. Could someone point me in the right dir. if I were to trouble shoot the wiring myself. I do HVAC so I do know something of wiring.

    Thanks

    Response From re-tired

It would help if you descibed the problem history a bit more .Does it misfire all the time , or hot , cold , under a load , at idle only or at speed too . When did it start ? With what you have given us I would guess : broken valve spring ,bad lifter ,cam lobe worn .

It only misses at an idle and after it has been warmed up for 15-20 min. It runs fine while driving. My Daughter just bought the car and the guy said he was going to help out by writing it up for $695.00 instead of $1500.00 that we paid, got boned on the deal

I seem to recall several sebrings having egr valve problems . Try driving with the egr valve disconnected .

I see in your post you didn't mention changing the spark plug wires. try switching wires with a known good cylinder and see if the misfire moves off of #5. Also, which 6cyl do you have? Chrysler has made a few different ones and knowing the exact one helps us out a lot.

    Response From sten

Sorry I thought i put in the post that the plugs , wires, cap and, rotor are all new.
It has the 2.5L SOHC Multiport fuel inj
