EGR Valve 96 Buick Regal

Question From regalcustom96 on EGR Valve 96 Buick Regal

I have a 1996 Buick Regal Custom 3100 that I've been driving for a few years as a "no car payment" car. The check engine light has always been off and on, the code pointing to EGR insufficient flow. I've been in the bad habit of getting it cleaned right before I get an emissions test to clear the light. But it always comes back on within a day or two.

I'm finally buying a newer truck, looking to sell the Buick. Do you think buying a new EGR valve and slapping it on would fix the problem buy-and-large? I know there are other issues like the lines in and out, etc. But for $90 off the shelf, it would be worth it to just try and change it out instead of going through a shop. I've taken my old one off to try to clean it, so I'm fairly sure I could change it out.

Any thoughts are appreciated

Matt

You probably have a clogged EGR passage in the intake manifold between the EGR valve and the inside of the intake manifold. That is a pretty common problem on those.

Best way to clean it is to remove the throttle body and EGR valve. Then clean the passage out with a coat hanger and carb cleaner. Rifle brushes work too. Replace the EGR gasket and throttle body gasket, clear the codes, and see what happens.

1992 Buick Regal - Error Code 41

Question From J_Duchscher on 1992 Buick Regal - Error Code 41

I have a '92 Buick Regal - 3800. Recently my check engine light has started to go on and off. Also my car has picked up an occasional hesitation (runs fine most of the time, but hesitates a little and then comes out of it). I checked the codes and came up with error code 41 (which is the cam sensor signal). I took the car to the shop and they replaced the cam sensor, timing chain, magnet….took the car out and the same thing. I ran the car for awhile and took it back to the shop and they did a few more things and car runs the same. This has been ongoing for a couple years. Now my car died out and want run. I’m tired of spending money at the shop and not getting results. Any ideas what it might be…ICM, Coil Packs, ECM, EGR Valve???? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Response From nickwarner

believe it or not, this is a good thing that it wont run. Find out whats missing, spark or fuel, and we can narrow it down from there. Now that its not an intermittent its easier to find

Response From J_Duchscher Top Rated Answer

The spark plugs have spark when trying to start. Also, the fuel pump is working, but I'm not getting fuel to the motor. Some additional information. After the car sits for an extended period of time and I try to start it, it does start for a split second and then dies and won't restart at all. If I leave it sit for awhile the same thing. Something else to note. When the car was in running condition, the colder outside the better the car ran (I'm talking like below 20 degrees), the warmer the air temp the more it picked up a hesitation. Hope this information helps.

have tried cleaning the carbon on the spark plug? if not then try it, i think i will help!

'94 Buick Regal stalls

Question From swejan on '94 Buick Regal stalls

I received a 1994 Buick Regal Custom a few months ago with roughly 150,000 miles on it. Since then it has been nothing but trouble.

About a month after purchase the vehicle began to stall when coasting, or breaking. While decelerating the RPMs along with the Oil gauge dips dramatically and once it hits red the car dies. The Air blower, radio, and everything remains on other than the engine cutting. The car does not buck or make any noise when this happens. The check engine light does not come on beforehand, once the car is stalled the check engine light will pop on as well as the "Check Gauges" light. I can shift the car and restart it with no hesitation, when done the check gauges light is no longer on, nor is the check engine (although on some occasions it will remain lit until the second start post-stall) Between the time of now and the problem beginning the fuel sender unit began leaking gasoline and was replaced. It appears since the replacement the stalling and bouncing of the gauges has occurred more frequently, including while idling (although it is possible that I have simply become more aware).

I have been doing some online research to which I have found similar problems posted to which people have suggested a bad Crankshaft position sensor. Most seem to agree with the for-mentioned however I have also read the suggestions of a bad fuel filter, bad EGR valve, or the Torque converter clutch could be staying engaged.

Due to my horrific lack of car knowledge, not wanting to be taken advantage of by mechanics, and the expensiveness of throwing random parts onto the vehicle I am looking for any ideas to what the problem could be, or if it could possible be one of the theories I found online to similar problems posted by other car owners.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Response From swejan

Hmm, (forgive my questions, I enjoy learning). How would this relate to it stalling when the break pedal is pressed? So far it has never stalled due to idling alone, it has always been while slowing, stopping, or turning while using the brake.

Response From zmame

Your break booster requires vacuum to operate if there is faulty IAC or air restriction it will stall.

I have a buick regal 94, 3800 with 150k with the SAME exact problem!

vehicle inspection

Question From nightwork on vehicle inspection

1994 buick regal 3.1 liter 124,000 miles has problem passing hydrocarbon part of inspection. 220ppm is acceptable. i am now at 393.ppm. i went to inspection and passed co because i put a new oxygen sensor on. i failed the hc with a 238ppm at this time. i had new plugs put in the platinem kind. went back through inspection and failed with a275ppm. i drove it on the expressway and went back another day it failed with 320ppm. i next changed the thermostat. drove it to ispection left car running in line for about an hour before my turn came failed with 329ppm. went back 2 days later and shut the car off every two cars and starteed up about three cars before my turn for inspection and this time it went up to354ppm. my next step is to buy a cat.converter or egr valve or what running out of money soon. i changed oil and filter and this did not help.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

If you continue just throwing parts at it, then you will run out of money.
HC is unburned fuel so you can put all the Catalytic Converters that you want and it still won't pass. Try a coupls simple things first.

Change the engine oil. It gets raw gas dilution and will cause High HC

Ignition misfire is a common cause so make sure the ignition wires are in real good shape. If they have over 50K on them, then replace them.

Make sure the engine is reaching full operating temp and it has the correct thermostat.

Response From DanD

All good points Hammer Time.

High levels of hydrocarbons could also be due to a small continual amount of burning engine oil. I’m not talking billowing blue smoke or even a measurable amount of oil missing on the dipstick; but enough oil consumption; that along with the normal amount being produced during combustion; could cause your car to fail.

Allowing your vehicle to run, while waiting for your turn on the machine; is likely one of the worst things to do. As long as the temp gauge is in the normal area and if the test center that is performing the test; are doing it properly; they will (or are suppose too) precondition the vehicle before testing. In other words making sure the engine and converter is up to operating temperature. All the machines I’ve used, give the inspector an option of performing a conditioning cycle as the inspector enters the vehicles information into the machine. This conditioning cycle will run the vehicle up to speed on the dyno for a minute or so to warm things up.

Most any vehicle’s engine (especially 1994 and older models) will begin to load up the exhaust system with emissions due to the low rpm of an idle. The converters will cool off and shut down if idled to long; same goes for the single wire O2 sensors, they will go off line, if the exhaust cools below 450degrees. Once that happens the computer looses its ability of fuel control and will run the engine using a fixed set of values. Likely rich because the computer programming thinks; it has a cold engine to keep running; when in fact it’s only the exhaust system that has cooled. If you still feel the need to keep the engine running; hold the RPM at 1500 rpm plus, just before the inspector gets his hands on your vehicle.

Before you condemn the cat; have it tested by someone that has a gas analyzer. It’s a fairly simple test; drill a 3/16 test port hole in the exhaust pipe in front of the cat (Pre cat). Bring the vehicle up to operating temperature and take a sample of the exhaust gases at the test port. Now plug the test port (self tapping bolt) and take a second gas sample (Post cat) at the tail pipe.
With this math formula; Pre minus Post, divided by Pre, multiplied by 100 will give you the percentage of the converter’s efficiency. Anything below 70% efficient is considered weak and could use replacing.

One last thing; if you’re going to replace the converter; good luck finding an efficient after market replacement. I’ve done a lot of testing on converters and have yet found an aftermarket that was any better then about 75 or 80 % efficient.
An OE converter for this old of a car is pretty expensive; I would suggest a universal converter; the biggest one that you can find, that’ll fit.

The aftermarket converters that are listed and sold as per application; well I believe that it’s not the engineers that decide which goes with what vehicle. It’s the bean counters in the accounting office that decides this. This is just my take on this but; they must look at these converters and say; if this vehicle is running 100% as intended then this much of a converter or converter contents (Platinum Rhodium and Palladium) will do. Where are we ever going to have a piece of machinery that will run 100%, 100% of the time????
The vehicle manufacturers knows that it can’t or doen't happen; look at the size of converters they install at the factory. They are usually twice the size of the aftermarket.

Sorry for the ramble; but I still left out a lot of points I was trying to make.
Good thing EH!!!!!!! LOL

Dan.
