Fix or ditch - 99 Acura 3.0CL

Showing 5 out of 5 Posts
Question From Jacquie on Fix or ditch - 99 Acura 3.0CL

My 99 Acura 3.0CL is having trouble shifting (automatic) and the engine has also killed on the freeway. The shifting issue is the car will get stuck between gears when it goes to shift and once it finally catches it shifts HARD. The EGR valve was just replaced and I was told the manifold sensor may be malfunctioning as well. Also it needs new timing belts (30k past due date), breaks, and there's electrical issues with both headlights. My question is, at 225k miles is this beast really worth dumping all that money into or should I start looking for a new car?

Thank you for your time! :)

Response From zmame

It's always a gamble when you start getting into older cars with high milage. I would have the car totaly looked over and get an idea if there is anything wrong with the transmission and or engine and go from there.

Response From Jacquie

A few months ago when I got it looked over they said it was in great shape. The transmition has been look at and said to be fine. (when I was having the EGR valve issues it kicked back a transmition code so they made sure to look it over to make sure it was alright before replacing parts).
I've been complimented a few times on how well of shape it's in, but that was prior to this shifting issue.

Response From zmame Top Rated Answer

Was it acting up when you got your EGR on?.. If it's a constant thing that you can get to happen every time take a tech or service adviser for a ride to show them the problem

Response From Jacquie

It actually doesn't act up if it's cold outside. I drive to work at 4:30am and it rides smooth. It's only when the weather is EXTREMELY hot that it acts up. That's why it's been so hard to fix. After I got the EGR valve replaced the weather had been on the colder side so I had 0 problems at all, but now that we're getting into summer it's surfaced again.

Question From bigT on help with acura

I have a 1997 Acura 2.2cl. 2.2 liter 4cyl, auto trans. Problem is the car was overheating at idle. I replace the electric cooling fan because it wasnt coming on. Also replaced the coolant fan switch. It was fine for a few days and then today started heating up again while sitting at a redlight. So I decided to replace the thermostat. Car did okay for a few minutes then started heating up while idling at a standstill. It got almost to the red before I shut it off. When I started it up again it was running real rough and a brief amount of white smoke came from the tailpipe, it also got hot again almost immediately, I shut it down and let it cool for a few minutes, then I removed the radiator cap and started it again. It ran very well at idle and even giving it a little gas it was fine, and did not heat up, but there was ALOT of steam coming from the radiator. I put the cap back on while it was running and it immediately strted running rough and blowing white smoke from the tailpipe, and getting warm fast. What do you think? I have my suspicions, but want a second opinion. Thanks in advance for any response.

Response From Jeff Norfolk

Sounds like a blown head gasket or cracked head. When you remove the radiator cap you allow the cooling system pressure to come out the top instead of through small crack or failed gasket. Sorry

Response From bigT

Unfortunately, that was what I was thinking. Not good. Thanks for the 2nd opinion.

Response From Jeff Norfolk

You are welcome. Hopefully it is just a gasket. Be sure if you do the work yourself, seek the help of a good machine shop to check over the head before reinstalling it. Good luck with the repair.

Response From bigT Top Rated Answer

Oh no, wont be doing the work myself. Just bought the car a week ago today. Car lot where I bought it said if there were any problems they would take care of me. Hopefully they meant it. Another question though, the check engine light was on, so I took it to an Acura dealer and it was an o2 sensor, and the egr valve. There was a warranty on emissions parts for this car for 14 years or 150000 miles. So they ordered the parts and are replacing them when they come in. There is no way the head was blown before this morning because I did not have any of the major symptoms until tonight. Would the emissions stuff cause this? Or could something they did have caused it?

Response From Jeff Norfolk

No to both questions. The emissions stuff won't cause this kind of failure. The car may have gotten to hot when the fan was not working and now another problem has shown up. Or the problem may have been there since the fan problem was discovered. Hard to say but I would think it got to hot when the fan failed.

Response From bigT

Ah well, one could hope! Thanks again, I suspected it, but hoped someone could have another idea.

2001 Acura Integra Engine wont turn

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From khrisms on 2001 Acura Integra Engine wont turn

I recently started commuting 220 miles in my car which has never had any mechanical problems. On my last commute there was a great deal of rain and flooding. About 45 miles into the commute the car started to hesitate at 80 MPH. I slowed down to 65-hesitate. I pulled over at the service area and then the check engine light came on. The mechanic tested it--no hesitation.

Today I drove back and the ride was fine. When I got off the highway and stopped at a light, it shut off. I restared it and drove it home.

I just tried to start it and it wont turn all the way over, could it be:

1) Plugs and wires (never changed)
2) EGR valve (changed once 3 years ago) --perhaps the car cant breathe
3) Air filter
4) Ignition coil
5) Bad starter (I have never had a problem starting the car though)
6) The starter signal fuse (Reaching here)
7) Something far worse

Should I change the plugs, wires, filter, and starter signal fuse and see what happens?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Hard to tell the extent of flood water that might have damaged something. Usually if it didn't kill the engine dead it the secondaries that would be hurt like the coil, plugs, if it uses a cap and rotor. Wires should be ok but if you going for it those too.

The air filter if clean should NOT be a cause.

You might be able to get to the exact problem by spraying window cleaner (pure water won't work for this) on the coil/coilpack, wires and see arcing in the dark and the skip return. If you try that do it with warm to cool engine - not fully hot. It may help to have a helper hold the brakes and put some load on the engine (PLEASE DO THIS SAFELY AND NOT STAND IN FRONT OF THE CAR!!) while in gear. This is just one way to find a cracked part the leaks electricity.

If the car was subjected to serious flood water (more than a few inches) and heavy spray that may have soaked the engine all bets are off. You could have sucked in water and done damage to the engine if so. Hope not and it's something routine and simple, -T

Folks: When dealing with water on a road best bet is to take the long way and turn around. If you are sure and the water is shallow and not moving, drive at a snails pace. If it gets deeper than you thought back up and out at once.!! It's your life not just your car!! Have had at least 15" of rain where I live so I know the story.

Expect tons of damage if you go thru deep water and survive. Brakes will fail later, as well as bearings, CV joints, U-joints, and many other possibilities. Car don't do water that way. SUVs are No exception! I want you back folks - stay safe. If no car problems you can still visit here at the off topic area and discuss anything "G" rated.
