2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7

Question From jromano624 on 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7

I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7 with approx 138K miles. The vehicle has a new battery and the alternator was recently checked by my local autoparts store.

The jeep will not start unless it is jumped or you remove the battery cable and reinstall it. Turn the key and no noise, no clicking...nothing. Electrical components come on but does not start. I've checked the battery terminals and termination to the chasis to ensure the ground is tight. My next move is the starter and celenoid. Am I on the right path?

Response From Discretesignals

Did you actually clean the battery terminals with a terminal cleaning tool or wire brush. I've seen terminals that looked good, but where corroded enough to create a large voltage drop. Do you have a volt meter and know how to use it? Does this have an aftermarket alarm system?

Response From jromano624

There was no corrosion on the terminals however, I did remove them, clean them and reinstalled. My next move was to remove the starter and take it to the local autopart store but I could not turn the front drive shaft to remove the bolts. I just cannot afford to take it to a shop and spend hundreds on it. No aftermarket alarm system. Thanks for your reply.

Response From Discretesignals

Before you remove the starter get hold of a volt meter and do some voltage checks first. I've seen starters that get removed from vehicles work when they are tested, but won't work on the vehicle just because they were banged around. Doing some voltage measurements may save you from having to remove the starter or going on a wild goose chase trying to isolate the problem.

Another simple test you can do before breaking out the volt meter is to have someone hold the key in the start position while you tap on the starter motor housing. If the starter operates after you tap on it, starter needs changing. Don't smack it too hard or you can damage the magnets inside. If tapping on the starter doesn't work, do some measurements.

Read this post:
http://autoforums.carjunky.com/...search_engine#178831

edit: one step I didn't add to that was to check for battery voltage on the solenoid terminal where the small wire is connected while having the key in the start position. If there is no power on the small wire at the solenoid terminal with the ignition in the start position, let us know.

Response From jromano624

Great tip about tapping on the starter. When the key is turned and you tap on the starter, it starts. Now that I know it truely is the starter, my next item is to get the front drive shaft to turn. When I attempt to turn it by hand it moves about an eighth of a turn and stops. Any suggestions?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

The front axle doesn't have a central disconnect or locking hubs to disconnect the front CV axles from the wheels. That means the front driveshaft spins while the vehicle is in motion no matter what mode you have the transfer case in. You won't be able to turn the front drive shaft by hand unless you have the front wheels off the ground.

Thank you, problem solved!

'06 Grand Cherokee drivetrain issue

Question From glt23 on '06 Grand Cherokee drivetrain issue

2006
Jeep
Grand Cherokee Laredo
6 cyl.
90,000 miles

Has had some interesting sounds coming from it. When a bump is hit, a few thuds are heard under the center console. When a large enough bump is hit, the thuds turn into almost a thudding rattle. The only way to make it stop is by putting it in reverse and backing up a bit, then back to normal. My research has had many 'maybes' and two mechanics who have looked at it are at a loss. I pulled the front drive shaft to see if maybe it was the front diff, and when put into drive, only the front drive shaft from the transfer case spins! Is this supposed to be front wheel drive dominate? Or do I have major issues? Dealer replaced front passenger axle a few years ago, no issues for ~ 6 months.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Always tricky with noises - rattles. Try looking at all mounts for drivetrain and cross supports that might be broken. Putting it in reverse is putting torque backwards on certain mount is kinda a clue to look for mounts,

Could lug nuts come loose with vibration form a loose axle or form axle oil leaking?

Showing 6 out of 6 Posts
Question From moonchildonmars on Could lug nuts come loose with vibration form a loose axle or form axle oil leaking?

I had 4 tires replaced on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with 197499.0 miles
On Christmas Eve driving for MI to NY my tire started to sound funny I thought I had a flat tire. Drive off the freeway and looked at the tires everything look Ok.
Drove a little ways down the Rd the tire still sounds funny. Look a 2nd time to discover that the front left tire was sitting at a 45-degree angle with 3 lug nut missing. Had the car towed to a service center. When I was there the service guy showed me that my axle was loose in the differential and I didn’t have a front drive shaft. To my understanding this make the jeep 2-wheel drive car vs. a 4x4. And has no affect on the lug nut coming loose. With is what I was also told by the service guy. He also told me the reason the tire was sitting at a 45 degree angle was because the lug nuts where not tighten right. At this time I got the jeep fixed 5 new blots 5 new lug nut but they didn’t have a new rim in stock. He also inspected all parts involved with the tire including the bearings.
I had them put the bad rim on the back and when on my way.

When I came back to MI. I took the jeep back to the first place that put on my tires to have them replace the damage Rim.
They told me that the tire came off because of the vibration of the loose axle.
(There was no damage on the tire that the 2 service center put on the front in replace of the damage rim that is now sitting on the back of the car).
After a day they returned the car to my husband with a post on the invoice “ Unsafe to drive, L/F axle has been cut with saw, front axle drive shaft “ + “axle seals leaking, front axle missing parts” also adding “important! Lug nuts must be re – Torque after 25 miles customer acknowledgement” they didn’t tell him it was UNSAFE to drive or any thing listed above. But they paid for the new rim.
With brings me to way I need help. I trying to get back the cost of the tow, the bolts, the lug nuts, and Labor.
Could lug nuts come loose with vibration form a loose axle or form axle oil leaking?
Is there any other thing that could cause lug nuts to come off?

Thanks

Moonchild and Mars

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

I'm confused. Is your Jeep 4X4 or 2X4? If it's 4X4, what happened to the front driveshaft? It's normal for the front axle (assuming it's 4X4) to move in and out of the front differential a bit. With independent front suspension, it has to be able to. Left front axle has been cut with a saw? What's up with that? As Tom stated, if the lug nuts were tightened properly, this shouldn't have happened. If the front driveshaft was missing, the front axles would be 'free wheeling' and be of no consequence. The axle seals leaking would have nothing to do with it, either. To quote Tom: I'm not there, I can't see what they are seeing. But, sounds to me that you are having the wool pulled over your eyes.

Response From moonchildonmars

Tom .. the studs and lugs have been replaced. No hub replacement
Loren .. it is a 4x4. with out a front driveshaft. so now it’s a rear wheel drive jeep.
I don’t know what happened to the driveshaft it’s not on the car
I just got the car for a $1. (the guy thought the jeep had a cracked block it was just the radiator.)
I also don't know why it was cut with a saw.

The axle is moving 1 inch up and down. And is missing CV boot as far as I can see.

the 1st place would not tell me what parts are missing on the axle when I went back today to have the lug nut re Torque.
And yes I think there trying something funny too

thanks

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but I'm still concerned about that front axle. You said it is moving up and down about an inch? That would suggest to me that either a very bad wheel bearing, very bad u-joint at either end, or the axle was actually 'sawed' in two? None of those scenarios are good. Even though it's now a 2X4 that front axle has to be there, so, have a reputable shop check it out and give you the truth.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

"Tom .. the studs and lugs have been replaced. No hub replacement"

I know - what was on my mind was that there is/was a rule of thumb that if more than two were called for you tossed the hub as the integrity of the unit could be questionable. The splined pressed in stud style isn't really meant to replace them even though the parts are available. The holes they are pressed into aren't really designed for multiple replacements. Probably safe with the higher risk being that they could spin and not allow the nut to remove,

T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

IMO - lug nuts won't loosen from vibrations if properly tightened to begin with. There ARE torque specs for lug nuts and suggestions by some vehicle makers to recheck that torque after they have been driven or sometimes even periodically.

LEFT side lug nuts if loose will continue to loosen vs RIGHT side ones tend not to in equal conditions.

It's also in question whether 5 of 5 studs and lugs should be replaced or the hub repaced.

More: Corrosion between wheel and hub can leave a false sense of the nuts being tight! That needs to be known ok first when wheel is off for any reason,
