Question From dannyny on Door Handle Broke

Hello!

Trying to get information on replace a door handle for the vehicle below on the drivers side drivers door (front)

Year of vehicle - 2001
Make of vehicle (Pontiac/ Aztek)
Model of vehicle ( Aztek)
Engine size (3.3)
Mileage/Kilometers (180,000)

Thanks,
Daniel

Response From oxracing

inner or outer door handle?

Response From dannyny

outer

Response From oxracing Top Rated Answer

checked my est. program, only lists .7 hrs to remove & replace so its probably fairly straight forward. remove inner door pnl, keep door glass rolled up. according to the illistration it looks to have 2 bolts or nuts (10mm) to attach it to the door and an acctuator rod with a plastic retainer clip, most of the time with the inner door pnl and inner liner removed you can use a flash light and see the back side of the handle assy. i havent actually replaced one on this vehicle, i'm just going by my estimating program, but this is pretty much standard proceedure for most outer handles. usually the toughest part is removeing the door panel. hope this helps

Response From dannyny

Thanks just went ahead and got someone to do it. It was going pretty smooth except those 10mm screws were riveted in.
Had to break and replace with regular screws and and nuts.

Response From repairchoiceuk

I think you will have to remove inner door panel. then it would be fairly easy form there

Question From goingcrazy on 1993 pontiac grand prix problems

hi, I have a battery drain problem on my 1993 pontiac grand prix that I know is caused by my power door locks. They have began to lock/unlock continuously until the battery is drained.I was told to replace the door lock relay but am having trouble locating it inside the door.Any help at all in where I should look will be greatly appreciated.I also have another question, would unplugging a fuse be a viable solution to my problem and if yes, what fuse as none are labled for power door locks? Thanks in advance.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I bet a switch for the locks is just brain dead causing this. Probably not too hard to replace the bad one, T

Response From goingcrazy Top Rated Answer

I unplugged all the switches attached to the door handles and same result, the actuators still lock / unlock continuously.

window off track??

Question From kimmifla6369 on window off track??

2007 pontiac grand am - 30,000 miles - my rear passenger window made noise today when putting up - forgot about it put it down a lil later half way- got home went to put wont go - tried pulling on while using rear button, nothing accidently pushed all the way down, thinking...duh now it wont go up, i dont think its the switch or motor it was working , just made a noise - off track possibly - can i open up interior panel some way to expose window?? its about to rain1 thanks any help greatly appreciated

Response From Hammer Time

It's probably a bad regulator and replacing it is the only way the window is going up.

Response From kimmifla6369 Top Rated Answer

even if it was working, and window made a funny noise going up?
there is no way to pull up?
i read something about taking door handle off & then...
TY

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Not totally sure what's wrong here. Most repair would be whole regulator as Hammer Time said. If stuck down but making noise it could still be messed up beyond real fix. Perhaps for temp fix if stuck down take door panel off so it can be seen and sometimes is glass is loose can hold it up with a piece of wood placed just so till fixed properly. Unplug wiring to regulator if so or must do something.

Not sure what you are experiencing so that's just a wild guess,

Response From kimmifla6369

thank you - i was married to a mechanic for 20 years, was the first woman to take autoshop in my hs, worked in auto bodya - do my own basic stuff on car & motorcycle - so im totally blind here - i just know its not the motor - motor is working making the soft humming noise, i think its off track? im older so do windows still have tracks?? it got stuck half way up was making some weird clunk noise, like off track or something fell down there - which would be rare, but idi have a kid in car earlier...then i stupidly played with it and pushed all the way down, hoping then would come up - dummy what was i thinking! i need a temp fix no $4 right now!!
TYVM-

Response From Discretesignals

Didn't they stop production of the Grand Am in 2005?

Temp fix would be to: (1) tape plastic over the hole. (2)remove the door panel and push the glass up. Then use a hose clamp around the center of the track to hold the window sash up. (3) Pull the window up and wedge rubber hose between the glass and belt molding. Your pick.

Response From kimmifla6369

maybe its a prix then I always get it mixed up! - thanks for that I need a temp fix! no$$

Response From Hammer Time

It depends on just how it failed. If that regulator cable got jammed up, then not much of anything will let that window move.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

OK - you need cheap to free to just get window up for now. YOU have to look with door panel OFF to know that the problem really is then what you can do of many suggestions already.

Refresh: Regulator likely for this one. Cable like many garage door lines is tough and if needed to cut will take a good cutting tool if all in bird's nest in there. If plastic should cut OK. It whatever is tight be careful of it going spastic unraveling more on your hands!

Unplug motor inside door just because I said so

Object is keep rain out AND be able to see out so the tape and plastic trick isn't such a good idea unless parked only.

Whatever tricks just know glass is tempered and if you use pliers (vise grip type something) on glass itself it is easy to bust whole window glass. Good luck,

T

Response From Discretesignals

If you can't get the window up because the cables are all tangled up, you can cut the cables with a pair of diagonal cutters to free the glass.

Response From kimmifla6369

i know its been awhile but i just realized i never replied and yall ask for that , & thats the least i can do - my son took car to get fixed temp- the guy said it was the relay, he got window in up and stuck a piece of wood in there , benn working for however long its been...; )

Response From Tom Greenleaf

The regulator on about all of this vintage the motor can keep working. The lift can be wire and pullies with cheap nylon rollers many just one so if that's off track or broken you are screwed to get a regulator and suggest get one with motor on it if optional.

Many are riveted in place and about impossible if the larger (should know what size they call them) ones common rivets will not do and faking it with assorted nuts and bolts probably wont work as it need the room rivets do not take up.

You'll see this with the door panel off and run it then the problem should show itself clear as day but funky thru limited view thru holes in metal for access under a plastic moisture wrapper which you should take care and put back on in place,

2005 Pontiac Pursuit/G5 - Driver's door latch/lock actuator not working

Question From automotively_challanged on 2005 Pontiac Pursuit/G5 - Driver's door latch/lock actuator not working

Hey there,

Hoping someone here might have some hints as to how I might get the driver's door open on my 2005 Pontiac Pursuit/G5. About a month ago, I went to get into the car and manually unlocked it with the key (as I don't have a keyfob), and although the lock did jump up on the door, I wasn't able to open it with the outside handle. Since it is a sedan, I hopped in through the passenger seat and tried opening it from the inside, and no luck there.

I have already partially destroyed the interior panel in an attempt to reach in the door and see what is or isn't connected anymore. The cable system going from the interior door handle was still connected, as was the rod for the outside door handle, and manipulating them inside the door right at the actuator would not get the door open.

I'd say that the clip in the bottom of the actuator that flips down to release the clasp that actually latches to the door post to keep the door shut is where my problem is, but I just cannot get the door open to remove and replace that part. I've seen people online say that sometimes the door's on this car can become stuck if that door post bolt is off centered, and that hitting the door slightly while trying to open it will do the trick, but that's not the case here (as determined by anything from light smacks with an open hand, to a rubber mallet). I've also attempted using a pry bar from both the inside (which was causing damage to the pillar), and from the outside (removed the back door to minimize damage, but the only movement was on the panel the latch is bolted to).

I'm assuming at this point, all I can do at this point to get the door open is to take a disc grinder or torch to the outside panel, peel back part of the door like a tin can, and take a hammer and chisel to the assembly and remove it in pieces? That is unless anyone has any other suggestions/recommendations as to what I might be able to do at this point?

That stinks of course. Yes it's hard to gain entry to inside door with it closed.

Try this. Have a helper with all the rods in the "UNLOCK" position butt bump the door towards being more shut while both or one at a time pull handles, push/pull the rods to latch.

Spray the heck out of inside of latch - something light like a WD-40 at first. It really could have jammed, corroded just wrong or a part broke. Once open then you can take the whole thing out and see (I hope) what's wrong and get a whole new one if needed?

Won't know till there,

Thanks for the advice. We did try this for a solid hour with no luck, however we neglected to soak the latch with WD-40. I'm thinking just judging by the feedback I'm getting from the handle that something inside is broken, but once we can get the door open, I already have a replacement latch/lock actuator waiting to be installed.

I'm just glad that you didn't say something along the lines of "GM has a proprietary tool for this exact situation. It's a $400 tool that you need a GM Certified Tech who's been trained on it, to use it on the door at a minimum two hour labor rate at $125/hr".

This is near 100% a physical latch problem not some GM special tool but there are tons of tools to open a door like when all keys or fobs are lost, don't work if battery dead or who knows?

Look right at the motion as best you can when pulling outside handle what moves from that while unlocked now both manually inside and by key it will pull down towards latch. That's where the problem probably is.

Inside handles on tons of GM vehicles DO NOT OPEN LOCKED DOORS on many models since forever.

Other snags you still need the dang thing open. Childsafe features (not usually a driver's door) can be a thing caught part way and not open from inside or out - another make rear doors only was a pest with that. Can't know without actually looking at this.

It's strong locked/latched shut and meant to be. If anything now that you are in ask an auto body shop for help as now you should be able to drive it there.

They open doors jammed shut from collisions so deal with it all the time but may need to waste the door for access?

I simply can't know all the ways this could have failed and even now inside most have a poor view of things with the door open never mind now,
