94' Nissan Altima

Question From More1101 on 94' Nissan Altima

1994
Nissan
Altima

I was having a rough idle in my car, it sounded like it wasn't firing properly so I replaced my spark plugs and my spark plug wire set. The issue was still there so I replaced the rotor and distributor cap. The issue was still there. Then my car died while I was driving it. Later I found out that the rotor shot off in the distributor cap and was ruined along with the distributor cap. I replaced both again and there appears to be no damage done to the distributor but the car still won't start. I have fuel and a spark so I thought it might be a timing issue and that maybe the timing chain slipped or was damaged, but after checking the chain looks good as new and is still tight. What else might be my problem?

Response From zmame Top Rated Answer

I belive that the altima is 3.0L V6 if so there is a optical disk in the distributor check the make sure the led under it is not damaged or if the holes in the disk are not plugged.

Question From rodriguezconnect on 2000 Nissan Frontier Sputters

2000 Nissan Frontier V6 3.3 L 150k miles

Was driving truck when it started sputtering, then it went away. No check engine light came on. Kept driving the truck for the rest of the day, then it came back, but worst. It sputtered to the point where it turned off. I tapped the Distributor cap with screwdriver handle and it started, so I replaced the cap and rotor the next day. It was working fine for one day, then it came back. When its cold it runs ok, when i drive it for a while it starts to sputter. I tap the distributor cap and it goes away. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

Response From Discretesignals

Funny that when you tap the cap the problem goes away. Would make you think that something is going on inside the distributor.

There is an optical position sensor inside the distributor that could have a bad electrical connection or the sensor itself is starting to fail. Really the only way you can figure that out is by using a scope and watching the sensor's waveform to see if it is glitching or not when the problem is occurring. That or swap the distributor with a known good one and see if your problem goes away.

Response From rodriguezconnect

I'm going to double check the connections to see if there is anything that could be causing that. I think eventually I am going to have to replace the Distributor. Thanks for the Information.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Check connection for sure. Is it dirty, dusty under cap? Some may just clear out with gentle use of compressed air if so,

Question From aaron7 on nissan sentra ignition issues

A friend of mine is working on his 1997ish nissan sentra.
The starter turns and sounds good but engine won't start. The spark plugs were replaced but no go.
So it isn't the battery, starter, or spark plugs...which means the problem is past my mechanical skills. :) any ideas as to what the problem is or how to isolate the problem?
Thanks

Response From Discretesignals

The starter is cranking the engine?

If the engine is cranking, but won't start, you need to check for spark, fuel pressure, and injector pulse. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to see if there are any trouble codes being stored in the ECU. Write down any numbers you get.

Response From aaron7

That's correct, the starter is cranking the engine but it won't start.
Thanks for the advice... I'll check on those three items

Response From aaron7 Top Rated Answer

Ok, it isn't getting a spark... and like I said, the spark plugs have been replaced... distributor cap maybe?

Response From Hammer Time

Is it getting injector pulse?

What is the fuel pressure?

Do you have power supply to the + side of the coil and the injector?

Question From nubbin71730 on my 2002 nissan frontier

My 2002 Nissan frontier with 3.3 6 cyl. Went to missing when engine warmed up. Went to auto zone and had them diagnose it. Got reading saying misfire in one cylinder. Was told I needed to replace plugs, wires, distributor , and rotor. I did all this and drove about 10 miles and when engine warmed up it starting doing same thing. What could be problem. Was told coil but this model has no coil.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Which cylinder(s) is missing? Does it miss only at idle, acceleration, and/or cruising? Does the miss go away after the engine has warmed up? Autozone is a parts store and can read codes, but I wouldn't rely on them diagnosing drive-ability issues.

You need to figure out which cylinder(s) is misfiring. Then you can find out why it is missing. It does have an ignition coil that is located inside the distributor, but a faulty coil won't cause a single cylinder misfire.

Response From kev2

recheck for codes you will get a p0301 to p0306 - last digit indicates the misfiring cylinder.

a misfire is often simple ...1)missing spark,2) no injector 3) a compression issue...
