1999 dodge avenger wont start

Question From francheska1979 on 1999 dodge avenger wont start

i have a 1999 dodge avenger and it just cut off and it wont crank up and it seems like its not getting any gas so its trying to turn over but not cranking the battery is new and i was told that before that the starter and it was fine
i have a 6 cylinder and the mileage is 133,333

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

I had the very same problem with my 1999 2.5 Mitsubishi powered Dodge Avenger. Turned out to be the ignition coil. Found a coil at NAPA, part # IC439, $130.
The coil is inside the distributor but was a relatively easy fix (about 2 hours). Remove battery, battery tray, distributor cap, and then entire distributor. Keep a mental note about the direction the rotor is pointing. The distributor base is a machined fit with an o-ring, so you may have to do a little gentle prying with a screwdriver on each side of the base to nurse the distributor away from the engine.
On the bench remove rotor, the cap gasket, remove cam position rotor, then carefully remove cam position sensor. Then remove the coil retainer strap and install the new coil. Keep all the parts layed-out in sequential order so as not to forget how it goes back together.
Reinstall everything in reverse order. When reinstalling the distributor to the engine, apply a little oil on the o-ring and base to aid in reinsertion. Remember the original position of the rotor? The distributor shaft will only engage the camshaft in the proper position, so you won't need to be concerned about timing being 180 degrees off.
I still had to crank the engine quite a while to get it to start because I had it flooded from trying to start it before replacing the coil.
This must have been a very common problem with the Mitsubishi distributor because nearly every 2.5 in the junkyard has the distributor missing. It's too bad the replacement coil has to be so damned expensive because there isn't too much to it.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Francheska; If the engine cranks over, the battery and starter are, more than likely, okay. There are a multitude of reasons an engine can quit running. Lack of fuel, lack of spark, and a multitude of reasons that it could have a lack of fuel or spark. You'll need to have some diagnostics done to determine what it's lacking. Sorry, no easy answer.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Gotta clear up the terms used. Is the engine turning with the starter motor - never mind if it runs - does the engine turn or not? Please explain as "gas" doesn't matter quite yet if engine doesn't spin, crank etc.,

2001 mitsubishi diamante 3.5l not turning over

Question From Kai on 2001 mitsubishi diamante 3.5l not turning over

hi everyone! so i've been battling with my sisters car back and forth for almost 6 months now.its a 2001 Mitsubishi diamante LS with the 3.5L v6 motor in it. in November (2014) i did a simple tune up on the car ( spark plugs and wires) because her car was skipping and when i hooked up my diagnostic tool it said cylinder 3,5,6 misfire. after i changed everything out the car started right up and sounded fine. well two days later my sister goes to get in the car and start it and it wont turn over all the way. she was getting fuel, she was getting spark, mind you i had already put a brand new battery starter and alternator in this car the year before. so it wasn't any of those. so i threw in the towel and she had it towed to a local garage where they told her the distributor was no good and they wanted almost 1200 dollars to do the job so i told them to stick it up their asses and got it towed back to my house and i put a new distributor in. still got nothing it wouldn't even try to turn over at this point EXCEPT for when i put it in neutral. (not my first tango with distributors i made sure everything was lined up correctly) if its in park it wont bother trying to crank. so my father suggested maybe its the neutral safety switch, another person told me after the electronic distributor got changed it needed to be re-timed and at this point I'm about ready to slam my head in a door over this car. please help me if you've had any experiences like mine with this car. i'm so fed up with it but its my sisters car and i cant just throw in the towel.

Response From Hammer Time

Your descriptions is totally confusing. Is the starter engaging and cranking the engine but it's not starting or is the engine not cranking at all? Cranking means the starter is rotating the engine.

Response From Kai Top Rated Answer

yes, sorry for being a tad unclear, basically the car wont turn over at all now, but when it is in neutral, it will try, but wont fully turn over. i had already taken the starter out and brought it to my job ( i work for an autoparts store) and i hooked it up to the alternator and starter testing machine to make sure the new starter i had put in hadnt gone bad. test results came back it was good. so i put the starter back in the car. tried turning it over in park still nothing. no lights, no anything. put it in neutral, try starting it i have dash lights, and it seems like it wants to turn over but cant.

Response From Hammer Time

It's your terminology that is so confusing. Turn over and crank mean the same thing. If it cranks in Neutral and not Park, then the transmission range sensor (neutral switch) has to be bad or the linkage is too worn to get the shift selector to the correct position.

You may also have a Crank, no start problem that will have to be diagnosed once you get the starter working correctly.

Response From Kai

i know im not the best at describing things im sorry if its frustrating. im trying here. i was told the neutral safety switch possibly went bad and thats why the car is now only making an effort to start when it is in neutral. before i installed the new distributor i could turn the key all the way to the on position and the car would try to start but it sounded like it was seriously struggling. i was told by a garage it needed a new distributor so i put a new one in and now when i turn the key all the way to on position while the car is in park it wont make a sound, no lights come on, it just doesnt do anything. the only time it does is when i have it in neutral. maybe it was a freak coincidence and it really does need a new neutral safety switch. i was just so fed up with the car i thought maybe i got a defective distributor. so before i decided to order another one and do a defective exchange i figured i would reach out to you guys to see what you think.

Response From Hammer Time

You need to fix you neutral switch issue before looking for other issues. The distributor has nothing to do with not cranking in Park. It's always possible the neutral switch is shorted in a way that is killing ignition supply when in Park but you aren't going to know until you fix that problem.

Response From Kai

thank you for all your help and being patient. im going move forward with getting the neutral safety switch in and ill let you know how it goes. i thought maybe it was the distributor that was defective because i didnt have that issue until i put the new one in. but nonetheless thank you so much for all your help. its greatly appreciated.

Car cranks-up when attempting to start, battery is ok, distributor is clean & w/o moisture, sparkplug cables ok, air cleaner is ok. Would the fuel filter be the culprit, being unable to deliver fuel for combustion? Car run smoothly the day earlier.

Response From Asilus Top Rated Answer

I would highly doubt the fuel filter is causing this from the description provided... even after years of use when they begine to go bad they just cause a rough idle...

Turn the key all the way forward like your about to crank the engine, listen very closly you should hear a drawn out sound from the back of the car, wich would be the fuel pump, if you hear it that checks that possibility off your list, some cars iv noticed if the alternator is bad the computer will not allow it to run, may be another possibilty. Check to see if plugs are foweled extemly bad... also crank on the engine with your headlights turned on, if they dim down to almost dead them your battery might be pullin one over on ya :P

Response From autojoe

get a can of carb cleaner and spray into intake(throttle body)and if car starts and stalls then it is a fuel related issue.if not get a spark tester from local auto parts store and check for spark to plugs.if possibel check for injector pulses with a cheap noid light if injectors are accessible.fuel pressure would be nice to know but spraying carb cleaner into intake causes car to try to start or start and stall would give an indication of a fuel related problem.

Question From kathill73 on no power

My car wont start was told it was the fuel pump but ive had that checked and its working, then was told it had a blockage in the fuel pipe got them replaced
petrol is now getting to engine but it still wont start the distributor was checked thats ok but when the spark plugs where checked there is no power getting to them what could be the problem?

Response From way2old

What kinda car are we working on? If fuel is getting to the injectors, and no fuel going through them, it is either a blown fuse, broken wire or a bad computer. You need to find out what the fuel pressure is also. If there is no spark at the plug, could be an ignition module, bad rotor, bad plug wires, bad cap. Let us know.

Response From Guest Top Rated Answer

its a mitsubishi space wagon
1993

Response From way2old

I don't have any info on that vehiclew I dont think. Not sure what a space wagon is. But look for something that controls the spaark, crankshaft sensor, ignition module and such.
