distributor rotor wear

Question From mike hammer on distributor rotor wear

In a 2.5 litre plymouth aclaim (or all distributor in general) What shape is the end of the rotor suppossed to be. In the alternator at which i am looking the end that makes the contact is perpincular to the side that is to say it is quite flat on the end . And is this supposed to make direct contact with the four different points or just pass close enough to allow an arc

Response From dmac0923

i believe they are just supposed to have a minimal air gap. just enough so they dont touch.

Response From mike hammer Top Rated Answer

Now that I have seen a new distributor rotor I can tell you that the end is very slightly curved. In my case general distributor failure was a two fold problem of the rotor end having been corroded and worn and in edition I believe some foreign material which was messing up the hall position sensor( a small sensor under the plastic cover which seperates the chamber in which the rotor spins and the rest of the distributor) had originated from the worn and corroded rotor. This piece of material was essentially just a flake of metal but was enough to somehow short out the whole distributors ability to function. The sensor contains some magnetic portions which make it particularly attractive to metal flake and rusty crap.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

That is called a 'Hall Effect' switch. As the distributor turns, the reluctor blades pass through the Hall Effect switch, telling the coil when to fire.

93 plymouth acclaim has no spark

Question From Willybill on 93 plymouth acclaim has no spark

My 93 acclaim quit on the road for the last time, because it has always eventually started. The coil has no spark. Tracing the wire back from the coil it goes into a black connector. Taking the connector apart and putting a test light in the correct hole, on the computer side, for the wire that goes to the coil, turning the key switch on and unplugging the gray connector next to the black connector the test light comes on, plug the gray connector back in the test light goes off. When the gray connector is plugged in the fuel pump comes on along with some relays and something in the throttle makes a sound. The Haynes wiring diagrams have alot to be desired. I hope someone can help me with this problem. Thanks

A common no spark on these cars is the pickup inside the distributor if this is the 4 cylinder engine. The 2.2 and 2.5 liter engines have a pickup under the cap and rotor. It is a round piece of plastic with a 3 wire triangular connector. If you unplug it and turn the key on, take a test light connected to ground and touch the probe to the vehicle harness connector pins. If you hear some clicking going on, replace the pickup. On this advice, I am assuming that the distributor rotor is turning when you crank the engine indicating that the timing belt has not failed.

Response From Willybill

steve01832- Yes it is a 2.5 and the rotor turns. I unhooked the three wire connector and grounded the test light to the battery touched the probe to each of the wiring harness pins, the light did not come on and there were no clicking or any sounds.

Response From steve01832

Take the test light and let's check for power at the coil. If the coil has power, hook a jumper wire to a good spark plug's side electrode and ground the other end. Put the coil wire onto the coil and connect the other end to the spark plug. Turn the key on. Touch the pickup harness (vehicle side) quickly on and off with the test light and see if you get spark. If you do replace pickup. In my last post, I forgot to mention that you had to tap the probe quickly on the connector. You have to simulate the frequency of the rotor turning. All you need is to tap the terminals about twice a second. Try this again and let's see what happens.

Response From DanD

I was going to post this earlier but forgot too.

Also you’ll only have power at coil positive for the first few seconds after the ignition has been turned on; this is called the fuel pump prime cycle.
If things were working as normal; you would turn the ignition on, the computer activates the ASD (auto shut down) relay for approx two seconds. You continue to turn the ignition to the crank position too crank the engine. The pick up coil begins to generate a RPM signal. The computer sees this signal and allows the ASD to remain on; supplying power to the fuel pump circuit, ignition system, charging system and the fuel injector(s).
In other words no pick-up coil signal during cranking, no ASD, no power sent to the different systems.
I don’t mean to jump in here Steve and get in the way but I’d hate to see Willybill looking for power when there’s not suppose to be any.

Response From steve01832

That's ok Dan. I often times don't make myself as clear as I should as far as trying to describe a diagnostic procedure. As you know, jumping under the hood and doing it is second nature. Trying to explain the procedure to someone is totally different. I appreciate you giving more info to people when I suffer one of my mental blocks. LOL

Response From Willybill

Steve, The coil has no spark. I tested the pickup with jumper wire the way Dan said, still everything is quiet under the hood. When I say coil has no spark, I mean when I am cranking the motor and when I am testing the pickup the way Dan said. When the car died on the road, I was driving at 50 mph and the motor shut off; it would still crank. In the past it was the fuel pump that would not work. When it got ready the car would start and run fine until this time.

car struggles with oil cap on, problem starting fixed new problem now

Question From mike hammer on car struggles with oil cap on, problem starting fixed new problem now

I have just replaced the distributor rotor on my 93 2.5 plymouth acclaim. I also cleaned the hall position sensor which had a tiny piece of metal stuck to it be cause apparently it is magnetic. I suspect that the piece of metal was from the old rotor which was shorter than the replacement. With the sensor free of crap and the new rotor installed i tried to start the car and it worked at last. After a minute or two of running it began to idle quite rough. I removed the air filter cover in case it was a lack of air and it seemed to maked no difference. I then removed the oil filling cap and the engine resumed normal funtion ( not running rough or moving too much on its mounts). After 2 or 3 minutes running smoothly with no oil cap I turned the engine off and waited a minute or two. when i tried to restart the engine with the oil cap on it was reluctant to start on the first or second try I then stopped trying from fear of flooding the engine as i have already flooded it and replaced the spark plugs before eventually making it work. Could this be a result of gas in the oil. Why does the engine run well with no oil cap when no air filter cover seems to make no difference. what can i do before i try to start it again and run the risk of flooding. My joy at finding the hall sensor and rotor problem was very short lived and I have no idea what the no oil cap\smooth running relation could be I would apreciate any advice as i feel the current problem is something simple that i just dont know about as i am even by backyard mechanic standards second rate. Thanks.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

You hit the nail right on the head! Fuel contaminated oil vapors will be picked up by the PCV system, enrichening an already fuel soaked engine. By removing the oil fill cap, you are, if you will, giving it a breath of fresh air. I've had a few cars towed in over the years, where the fuel pump leaked fuel into the crankcase and the engine wouldn't start unless the PCV was removed from the valve cover (all were Fords).

Response From mike hammer

I have changed the oil and charged the battery and the car starts and runs fine I let it sit for one day after changing the oil with the oil cap off(covered lightly with a clean rag to prevent crap from getting in while all the fumes got out). With the new distributor rotor and distributor wires plus new clean plugs it runs better than before. Thank you for the advice and I hope your site can help even more people the same way it helped me.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Mike; Thanks so much for the reply. I'm still a bit concerned as to why it was fouled so badly to begin with. Keep a real close eye on the oil. If it happens again, something is causing it to overfuel. You may even want to have the computer scanned, just to be sure. Faulty MAP sensor or O2 sensor are common causes. Good luck. Hope that's the end of it.

Response From mike hammer Top Rated Answer

the oil was very contaminated because before discovering the problem with the distributor I had incorrectly thought that the gas lines were frozen or the injector was malfunctioning so after adding some fuel line antifreeze i tried many times to start the car with no success. As well as that I shot some quick start into the intake with the gas pressed all the way down which i suspect allowed gasoline from the functioning injector , which i believed to be broken, to enter. several attempts to start were made also after adding a little bit of conductive goo on the plug ends. All together i can imagine about 20 or 30 different attempts to start the car coupled with the fact that I was due for an oil\filter change added up. The oil was fouled to the point that i could smell gas strongly on the oil I drained. I will indeed keep an eye on the oil and plan to buy a code reader when I can find one on sale. Thanks again with the help of your website i have been able to coax probably 80000 kilometres out of a 700 dollar used car.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Mike; That's great news. Thanks so much for the reply. Maybe, you'll coax another 80,000K out of it? Have a great weekend.
