Question From cdford on electrical problem

Hello. I have a 1992 GMC Sonoma 2WD with an electtrical problem. I drove to work truck was fine. I could not get truck to start to go home. Checked. No spark at distributor. Replace ignition coil. No spark. Replaced module in distributor, rotor and distributor cap. Still no spark. Don't know how or where to go from here. Please help. cdford.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You need to determine where you have injector pulse or not by using a noid light to test it.

Question From bigelow on 88 GMC S15 2.5L TBI won't start after replacing head gasket

Just replaced a blown head gasket in my 88 GMC S15. It's a 2.5L TBI engine. Got everything back together. As far as I can tell I got all of the wiring reconnected. Engine cranks but will not fire. Truck started fine before I tore it down. When I look into the throttle body and move the accelerator cable I do not see any gas squirting into it. However, I don't really know anything about throttle body's so I don't know if they do that like carburators do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

No, you wont see fuel squirt just looking down throttle body like a carb. Ran before and not now so look for anything disturbed or wrong with the job at a glance and then the basics of fuel pressure, pulse to injectors, spark with a tester and if that shows fine compression if you somehow have this way off by valve timing,

T

Response From bigelow

Thanks for the reply, Tom. Can you elaborate on what you mean in regards to checking pulse to injectors? I'm an old carburator guy. Haven't moved up to the injector world, yet.

Thanks.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Noid light is a special and relatively cheap tool to check pulse for injectors. That or just spray some starting fluid or carb cleaner down throttle body if you know there's spark and if it fires up for a second or two then you know it's a fuel problem to chase and can pretty much forget spark problems,

T

Response From bigelow

Ok, thanks!

Response From re-tired

If it turns out you have inj pulse and spark at the end of the plug wires, make sure you have fuel pressure. All this stuff checks out , did you have the head resurfaced ? Did you adjust the vaves properly?

Response From bigelow

At this point there is no spark at the coil or the plugs. Unfortunately, I ran out of daylight and had to stop for the night. Will start back on it in the morning and try to determine why.

Response From bigelow

Any recommendation on what to check first to try and determine why there is no spark?

Thanks.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Spark before and none now? Back. Check all electrical connections you removed to do this and fuses everywhere that should have power. If oil pressure switch* was disturbed or any wires pinched.

*Note sure on that but some can shut spark down.

?? Does distributor rotor turn? Shouldn't have been involved. Not much help but something in the process caused no spark if there before,

T

Response From bigelow

All wiring appears to be connected properly. All ground wires are connected. Checked fuses. All seem fine.

I pulled the ignition coil off and used my Actron Autoanalyzer to test it per instructions out of a Chilton manual. I did not get any readings. So, I decided to go and get a new one. Prior to putting it on, I did the same test on the new one. No readings on it, either. I'm guessing I'm not doing the test properly. Does the coil have to be on the engine to test it? Since it's up underneath the intake manifold I took it off to test so that I could get to the connectors. If it has to be on the engine to test it, I'll reinstall it and try to test it that way.

Response From bigelow

Update

  • Tested the pick up coil in the distributor. It tested good.
  • Ignition coil tested good.
  • Getting approx. 11.9 volts to the ignition coil from the ignition switch.

  • Still no spark.

Question From peggyfran1 on popping through tailpipe

1985 gmc pickup 350 with quadrojet.started popping like choke was sticking.put on rebuilt carb and new dist cap and rotor. not much change. still pops some and wants to die when put in gear unless you stay on the gas.just started this when it got real cold. thanks , frank

Hi Frank. You may want to start with a compression test. You may have a valve problem, or a jumped timing chain. Please post back with the readings of the cylinders. You really want to watch the guage on the first puff. When you crank the engine, the needle will pump up. You should get over 50 psi on the first puff. By the 3rd puff, compression should be around 140 psi, if my memory serves me correctly.

whats the easiest way to find out if it jumped time,if there is one ,rather than tearing it down.

One way is to set timing marks to zero by turning crankshaft bolt in one direction then count the degrees it moves turning the other way until distributor rotor moves. More than 5-6 degrees is trouble. If original chain the nylon cam gears don't age well with both age and miles too. Vacuum testing and compression testing could also be helpful.

By the time you have dug in and are looking at the thing strongly consider a new one while there! Cheap parts for the time it takes.

Some will run better for a moment if timing is advanced but take all info in for diagnosing,

Question From Sonoma4x4 on 2001 Sonoma 4x4 Mechanic can't fix

OK, first thank you all who are reading this for your time and effort, I am aware how valuable time is.

So here is my problem: 2001 GMC Sonoma 4x4 w/ ABS

A few weeks ago I had to slam on my brakes to avoid an accident. Since then I have no rear brakes (only have pedal near floor).

I am loosing fluid from somewhere that I can't find and neither could my mechanic. He said he couldn't find the leak if the master cylinder won't push pressure to the rear brakes. He said he tried to bleed it from the rear and from the rear lines of the master cylinder with no luck of getting any fluid.

I can say when the truck is off the brakes will pump up hard, and as soon as I start my truck I lose all pressure again except what I had before (only brakes at the floor).

If the master cylinder ins't pushing fluid out to the rear line then where could my fluid be going? Someone said possibly out the master cylinder into the booster, but this seems unlikely to me that I don't find any fluid under the booster or where the master cylinder connects to the booster.

Two lines come out the MC and go to (what I believe is) the ABS box. Two lines come out of the ABS and go to the front and one comes out and goes to the rear (from what I can see anyways). There is deff two lines in and three going out.

Has anyone heard of this issue or does anyone have a place me to start checking?

Also, I have NO ABS LIGHT on and the brake light only comes on when I'm low on fluid. I have went through a large container of brake fluid in about 35-50 miles.

THANKS YOU EVERYONE WHO CAN HELP!!!!!!

Well I just realized my in law has my wrenches so after being fed up I just took it to a local shop that specializes in just brakes with free estimates and dropped it off to have it looked at tomorrow. The guy was telling me it was prob leaking into booster also. I will make sure to post the results when I get them to help someone that might have future problems.

500$ in tires, a new distributor/rotor/cap, and now this...will it ever end????!!!! Thank you all for the responses and for your time!

The truck is 13 years old now. You have to expect some repairs.

Breakdowns come when you can least afford it. Its kinda related to Murphy's Law

    Response From Tom Greenleaf

I sure don't know how to second guess a hands on mechanic that can't isolate a leak that bad but some ideas that are just ideas:

Fluid unseen and consuming it probably is going into booster if nothing found elsewhere. Jeez, bet it master is just loosened it will show fluid coming out the firewall end right away.

Generally the part of master nearest the booster and lines there are directed to front brakes but can't know where it's routed for sure for a truck and ABS involved so easily.

It probably is the master that gave out with a hard stop. That's only probably and even if proven so will take proper sequence of bleeding to get it back to correct so suggest you find another tech with the equipment for this,

do not trust the bulb alone - scan for ABS codes...

some things I have seen- some may help other may not apply- getting the gang thinking-
    >pull back the carpet on drivers side fluid can puddle on floor from a bad MS
    >The brake fluid actually being drawn into the brake booster- and consumed by eng vacuum.
    >There is a small PIN on the proportioning valve that moves to isolate front from rear brake system...

    Response From Hammer Time

Tom is right. If you truly are losing fluid, it shouldn't be that hard to find.
