Hi. I have a 88 Mazda 323 1.5 automatic. It idles ok but it starts chocking when revved. There is a spark jumping across from the negative terminal to the primary tower of the igntion coils. What could be the cause of that? I have checked the spark plugs, cleaned the distributor cap, changed the HT lead and replaced the ignition coil but to no avail.

Electricity will take the path of least resistance so either the coil is cracked at the tower or there is too much resistance in the secondary circuit which includes the wires, plugs cap and rotor

Thanks very much for your reply. Could it be that the condenser is at fault? I did change the coil and it's still sparking... I guess what i'm asking is what would the most likely culprit be should the coil be ok....

I just named all the possible components. The condenser is just noise suppression. Just make sure the coil isn't cracked first.

i have a 1995 mazda 626 2.5L, 5sdp. it hesitates/stumbles upon acceleration until 1600 - 2000 rpm then runs ok. replaced plugs, dist cap, rotor appears ok. wires resitance under 11k ohms/3ft. new fuel pump/strainer/filter. 2 stage injector service(manifold and fuel additive) also tried a known working MAF meter. any ideas?

Check engine light on? You try a coil output test. Good coil should be able to produce a spark that jumps 3/4 of an inch.

That makes it harder to get to but it can still fail. In this case you would have to test at the end of the plug wire.

Pull the distributor cap off and you'll see the coil lead. Take a 12 volt test lamp connected to battery ground. Hold the probe of the test lamp against the coil lead while someone cranks the engine. Pull the probe away from the lead and see how far the spark can jump to your test lamp while the engine is cranking. Should be able to jump 3/4 inch gap with no problem. Don't crank the engine with the cap off without something for the spark to jump to though.

Mazda 626 Stalling Issue

1996 Mazda 626 LX 4 cylinder.
97k miles on the car.

While driving, when you come to a complete stop for more than 20 seconds, the engine stalls out. Only error report found during the time I've tried to fix this problem is Upper air bank sensor and I've replaced that. Now, this is going to sound a lot like I've been throwing parts at it but it was trial and error.
Engine is 3 years old
Replaced the spark plugs, cords and distributor cap. Plugs are getting sparks, have been properly spaced.
Brand new Ignition coil, old one had a bad connector.
Car doesn't over heat, has no problem speeding up or slowing down, doesn't stall out at any other time.

Now, I'm not completely great on this and most of these repairs have been done by friends that Know what they are doing. Have we missed anything that could be causing this? Curious if it could be something simple or if its time to have it connected to a auto shops computer for a full system test.

It was a general code, P0141: O2 sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction ( Bank 1 Sensor 2 ). We cleared it after repairing it and so far (30 miles) hasn't come up nor did it change the problem.

OK, so that had never had anything to do with your stalling issue and I assume you replaced the sensor to resolve the code.



You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try eliminating any vacuum leaks and cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Okay, I am having problems with it spuddering on acceleration, it happens alot when the car is warmed up I noticed, I also put some fuel injection cleaner thinking that may be the problem but no change. Any suggestions.

Any check engine light on? If there is any maintance due, plugs, wires, filter, etc. start there. Even if it doesn't solve your problem, it needs to be done & then can be crossed off the list.....

I replaced the Spark plugs and wires but not the cap and rotor, my engine light is on, I took it to mechanic and he ran the diagnostics and said that cylinder 3 has a miss. There was some green corrosion on one of the parts coming from the distributor cap when I unplugged the old wire from it.

1992 Mazda Protege SOHC, 1.8, AT, 140k

Need help diagnosing; not sure if I'm reading codes correct.
I get: 2 short, pause, 6 short, pause, 1 long, pause, 7 short.
I assume this is 26 (purge solenoid) and 17 (feedback system)???

Symptoms:
During acceleration or coasting, car will randomly stall or almost stall. Example: I'm going about 35mph, tach reads about 2k rpm, suddenly and briefly the rpms will drop to 0 and I will lose power, then it will bounce back to normal. It will repeat this several times in as many seconds. Accelerating, coasting, switching to neutral or lower gear all seem to make no difference. Half the time, the car will completely stall. I'll shift to neutral and restart (it always restarts, but not always on the first try). Sometimes the process repeats after restart and other times it goes away.

Any help appreciated.

Turned out to be oil in the distributor. Replaced distributor with one from a junk yard. Running fine for several months now.

Thanks for the help. Replace O2 sensor; code 17 hasn't come back in 3 days, but car is still acting the same (stalling). Code 26 hasn't returned either.

Exhaust smells like car is running rich. Some gray smoke.

Replace recently: fuel pump, distributor, cap, plugs, wires, IAC, air filter.

Today it stalled and wouldn't start. I was checking vacuum lines and accidentally broke a vacuum line nipple running from the the Pressure regulator solenoid to the Pressure regulator. I just let the line dangle there, but the care started despite. I drove the mile back to my office without problems, but when I went to leave 30 minutes later the car wouldn't start.

Thanks for any suggestions.

wc; The pressure regulator must have full manifold vacuum to it, or the computer will see a loss of vacuum (thinking you are under heavy demand) and go full rich.
Of course, this will cause an O2 trouble code.
