Question From Guest on Buick Skylark Crankshaft Position Sensor

So i have a 1993 Buick Skylark v6 3.3l and i am not getting any spark. so i changed out the ignition control module and the coil packs and am still getting no spark. Which leads me to believe its the CPS so how do i go about replacing the sensor. thanks

Response From Hammer Time

That Crank Sensor requires a $600 tool to install so instead of throwing parts at it why don't you spend $5 for a noid light and check for injector pulse. If you have injector pulse, you can eliminate the crank sensor.

Response From Guest

sorry buddy but i already did check for fuel injector pulse and i am not getting ANY so calm down.

Response From Guest

oh and what is this $600 tool your talking about because i didnt need it when i changed the sensor

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

You should take his posts for what they are..... The guy is trying to help you & save you some $$$$$$.

The tool you are inquiring about was/is made by Kent Moore I believe & it's sole purpose in life was to set the air gap on the crank sensor because it's a blind fit & it's around $600. Recently some companys started making sensors with no setting that bolt on. Sounds like you got lucky & got one of those because there are still some adjustable ones out there.

The man has a lot of knowledge, if ya work with him, he'll help ya get your ride going.... If you want to argue with him......well...........

Response From Hammer Time

Thanks Sidom

I just hope he has solved his problem before getting so rude with the people trying to help him. I doubt he will see much help from here on. .

sorry if i came off rude but i was just wandering what tool was needed because the sensor just bolted on. and yes it did fix the problem thank you. and again sorry

Response From Tom Greenleaf

rellsun ;

Glad you are all fixed up. The apology worked wonders as I was about to go postal on YOU. Hammer and Loren probably forgot yesterday more than I ever knew so you had the best of the web for free at your beck and call.

All be calm - this site is free and not begging which speaks loudly for integrity IMO!

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

The crank sensor is mounted just above and a little to the side of the harmonic balancer. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Question From granpabobby on intermittent problem 1989 Buick

1989
Buick
Regal
3.1 V6
unknown
problem..intermittent no start
no spark- no fuel in the run /crank mode
replaced : ignition module ,ECM ignition switch module and crankshaft position sensor
The motor failed to start completly..replaced the crank sensor and it ran for 2 days..then intermittent problem came back..
fuel pump tests good w/ 40 psi and good fuel flow through my tester
could the new crank sensor be defective ?
or could be something else ?
new relays ..all fuses checked
Now showing code 25..MAT too low..can not find a MAT sensor..is it part of the MAP sensor ?
Vacume is 20 inches and steady

Response From granpabobby

The crank sensor is in the block
no sensor on the balancer
shows code 23 MAT is low
There is no MAT sensor could it mean the IAT ?

Spotted a ground wire off near the crank sensor..wire has been off for a long time ..it bolts to the block but the bolt is gone..will have to find another bolt
Any idea what this ground is for ?

Response From Sidom

They're basically the same thing......The temp of the intake air.....

You may want to trace that one down.....
Also trace down the harnesses of the crank sensor....... I've seen some get oil saturated that eats off the insulation of the wires, they intermittently touch together causing some problems... Also make sure none of the other harnesses are rubbing thru anywhere or got up against something hot (EGR tube) & melted.....

Definitely clean & reattach that ground wire....

Got the book started traceing wires started with the crank sensor wireing...disconnected at the sensor the three wire connector showed a short to aon of the other wires ( center wire is uninsulated grounded shield..I cut the center R/F ground thus clearing the short..Motor started and has had no trouble for 2 days now..Good idea..thanks for the tip..you were correct !!!

Response From Sidom

Glad to hear you got it going...... I hate tracing down shorts. Those can be the biggest PITAs to find..

Sounds like the insulation on one of the wires was touching your ground wire giving you problems......

While not a huge deal that wire is there to shield out interference. Getting some bleed over from the secondary ign or other source can really reek havoc on that signal & cause some weird running problems of it's own.

But good job on tracing down the short and taking the time to let us know what the fix was.......

Those really do take a lot of patience (more than I have some of the times...).....

Response From granpabobby Top Rated Answer

Beware the crank sensors on these Buick 3.1
Mine was cracked all the way around..they can break off in the block
My old one failed completly and almost broke in two takeing it out .
Will reattach the ground in the mourning when the motor is cold .

Trouble with a possible shady mechanic

Question From JoeDaDriver on Trouble with a possible shady mechanic

I have a 1996 Buick Skylark 3.1L V6 Limited with 60,200 miles. The check engine light came on, I hooked up my OBD reader to it and it said it wasn't picking up the car. I took it down to the auto shop they had a bigger machine, they said it was the crankshaft position sensor. I'm in the process of selling the car so I told them to go ahead and replace it.

3 miles after leaving the shop my wife called me and said the check engine light came back on...so we took it back to the shop and he said it's reading the same code...after an hour of pondering he found that the harmonic balancer was damaged around the rim where the codes read from. So that was replaced.

But I just realized that don't you have to remove the harmonic balancer to replace the crankshaft position sensor on this vehicle?

My question is do you have to remove the balancer to replace the sensor? If so I have a bone to pick with this mechanic.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

That would depend on which sensor he replaced. This engine has 2 crank sensors, one behind the balancer that the balancer does has to be removed and on in the side of the block on the back of the engine that has nothing to do with the balancer.
