Question From ionmachiman on altima 93 won't very hard start on engine cold

Hi,

My car is a nissan altima 1993, 2.4l, automatic transmission, 200000 Km.
The problem is the car starts very hard when the engine is cold, and only after lots of cranking;
after it starts it works with no problems, there is no stalling, keeps rpm constant with no hesitation
or erratic increasing. It also accelerates ok, and everything else looks to be fine.
When the engine is warm it starts with no problem, even a couple of hours after i stopped it.

What should I check and how?

Thank you

Response From Guest

i checked the codes with engine warm and there shows no troubles; should i check again with the engine cold???

Response From autojoe Top Rated Answer

possible bad coolant temperature sensor.if have a scan tool look at sensor with engine cold and compare to ambient temperature.If no scan tool check resistance of sensor and compare resistance value to temperature of coolant....with cold would be close to ambient temperature.If you need chart I can email you one.most of the time on obd1 vehicles there are no codes.possible low fuel pressure?good plugs and wires?if you open throttle a little will it start easier?

Response From ionmachiman

-checked coolant sensor and ok
-installed fuel gauge, key on (engine not running, fuel pump is zooming) nothing on gauge; after couple of trials
about 30 psi on gauge going down (not very sure because i was alone, but there was some pressure but i'm not sure about levels; anyway under the normal)
-changed fuel filter
-testing again couple of times nothing on gauge (fuel pump is zooming)
???

Response From autojoe

what do you mean fuel pump is zooming?Is the gauge working?Try on another vehicle.If fuel pressure is good and then drops then possible bad fuel pump check valve/faulty fuel pressure regulator/leaking injector.

Response From ionmachiman

zooming like making zoomzoom
ty guys, it was so amazing what i found
a hose in the fuel tank was somehow turned and squeezed;
when cold it let out only a little gas, so the engine started after a lot of cranking;
after starting, as the gas was sucked in + warming up, the hose was dilated just enough to have a good start
after i checked the gas output from the tank, i thought that the pump is defective;
i opened the tank and h'seen the hose turned and i thought to check it;
i think such a circumstance is very rare
ty again

Response From autojoe

seen once before but is rare.Glad you got it fixed.Thanks for letting us know fix.

Response From ionmachiman

hi
checked coolant sensor and is ok
checked the fuel pressure:
-installed the pressure gauge
-key on engine not running (i heard the fuel pump zooming) no pressure
-after other couple of key on engine not running, the gauge showed about 30 psi (normal about 40) then
went down to 15
-changed the fuel filter
- key on couple of times (fuel pump is zooming) nothing on gauge
weird

02 Maxima bogs down when starting w/ a warm engine.

Question From islandguy on 02 Maxima bogs down when starting w/ a warm engine.

I have a 02 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5L 6sp which I purchased used in Dec 09 with 116K miles on it now. Since then I had both o2 sensors and a variable valve timing solenoid replaced. Everything runs fine except when I start the car warm without my foot on the gas the car will sputter and most times die. I have no problem starting the car cold. I also feel some hesitation when driving. Its not as peppy as it was when I got it just 3 months ago. While having the timing solenoid replaced I mentioned the hesitation to the mechanic and he cleaned the MAF. that helped with the hesitation for a little bit. As far as fuel usage, I have not seen any change, I'm still getting about 22 mpg. Any suggestions whats going on? What to check/test first? Thanks! J 2002 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5L, 6 sp, 6 cyl 116K miles

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

If the mechanic cleaned the MAF sensor and it helped for a bit, it's quite possible the sensor is bad. I have not had much luck cleaning airflow sensors. Usually replacement is recommended, although rather expensive.
Since you have a warm start problem, you should also check the Coolant Temperature Sensor. If it's out of range, it will cause improper fuel delivery.
These are not the only things that can cause this problem, however, the most common.

Steve

Response From islandguy

Thanks for the reply Steve! What is the average lifespan of a MAF would you say? Because I bought the car used I have no way of knowing how old it is.
I googled CTS and you're exactly right about my symptoms; trouble starting at normal temp. Since a CTS is much cheaper than a MAF I think I'll start there.

Like I told my mechanic.....I'll be back I'm sure!

Thanks again!
J

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

islandguy; Be sure to check for green corrosion in the connection at the CTS. Very common on Nissans. You can buy a spray can of electrical cleaner at the parts store.

Response From islandguy

Hey Loren can I use crc MAF cleaner for that?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

islandguy; Good question. Never tried MAF cleaner. We have both, and use them accordingly. Maybe, one of the other guys will chime in?

Response From islandguy

Ok I changed the CTS and ran the car until it was at normal temp. Restarted and still same symptom. Bogs down almost until it dies but doesn't. Someone told me it could be the timing? What do you think? I only drove less than a mile. Do you think the ECU needs more time to relearn to make any difference?

Thanks
J

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

islandguy; May be time to have the computer scanned. If it isn't storing trouble codes, should be able to see live data to give a clue to what's going on.
