Hi,

I have a 1993 Lexus ES 300. Lately, I've noticed that when I leave the A/C on for a while, it begins to smoke under the hood. I looked once and noticed that the smoking was coming from the top left corner or so. I've also smelled something like burnt plastic a few times when it runs. Sorry I can't be more detailed, but I'm not too car saavy. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Of course this is tricky without look right at it. If A/C is performing well and no strange noises it may just be that the engine and cooling system are hotter as A/C puts an extra load on that.

The compressor has a clutch when engaged and if it's slipping it could make a burnt smell. If you just look at your compressor with the A/C with it running full blast, see if the outer plate in the front of the compressor is spinning at the same rate as the belt running the pulley there. If it slip it like riding a regular clutch. It won't do that for long before it will need to be adjusted or a repair to it. When compressor is off note that the outer plate is still as it should be. That's the way it works.

While you watch look for anything that's near hot items that may be too close and check fluid levels in everything and if one is low, find out why,

Hey, just thought that I'd give an updated. Apparently, the smoke I've been seeing has got nothing to do with the A/C. Haha. I went to a shop today- a power steering line is leaking badly. It's odd though, because I didn't hear any grinding or anything until today. I'll get it taken care of though. Thanks anyway!

I took out the engine of the car to rebuild it. When i separated the transmission from the engine, the torque converter came loose so i pushed it back into place. When i finished rebuilding the engine, I put them back together. When i tried to run the vehicle, Transmission fluid leaked from the Front Seal. I have already tried to replace the front seal, but it leaks even more now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Inspect the torque converter hub/pump drive for cracks, grooves, or scoring. It is possible the front pump bushing is worn out and it may have gotten cocked when the converter slipped out. When ever you go to replace a torque converter seal for leaking it is always a good idea to inspect the pump bushing because most of the time they don't leak from a bad seal, but from a bad bushing or problem with the converter hub.

Another thing to be careful of on those is to make sure you use the exact same torque converter bolts. If they had washers, make sure they are on there also. I've seen the wrong bolts used that are too long and end up damaging the converter by pushing through the cover and into the TCC clutch.

99 Lexus RX 300, v6,90k miles. a/c comp. is humming only at stops and park. while driving its ok.cools fine. had belts changed not too long ago. maybe over tightened, maybe over charged, undercherged, maybe cooked. what do you guys think that might be?

What's needed is to know if the humming is while engaged or not as the fix would be different. When off the compressor is really just a pulley (clutch that has a replaceable bearing)

It's also possible that the noise is another pulley just acting up with the load of compressor being on if so.

I behooves you to tend to this real soon as if it indeed is the compressor, pressure taken and within specs, fixing it now will save both money and aggravation for the best fix,

PS: If compressor itself it's better to disable it now if you need to buy some time. Allowing it to fail could disable use of the car as a whole!

I am currently selling my 03 Trailblazer so that I can get a vehicle with a 3rd row - I have been looking at the Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, etc. but I am worried about some of the premature transmission problems that I have been reading about online (i.e transmission replaced at only 60k mi, etc)

I have an older 2000 Lexus ES300 and I purchased it for its reliability at high mileage.

My wife and I need the 3rd row vehicle (whichever we end up purchasing) to last at least 2-3 years and we were looking to stay at about 130k mi or less and thus looking at the 2000 - 2003 year range.

Does anyone know much about the transmission in these vehicles being PRONE to transmission problems?

I was also considering the Acura MDX's but they are much harder to find at great prices and they are a bit smaller inside.

Depends on the mileage, what it was used for, and how it was taken care of.

If it is high mileage, usually the 4L60E on those are iffy, especially if it was used for towing. They tend to burn 3-4 clutches at higher mileages.

4L80E is a much stronger transmission, but they have issues with 3rd gear clutches too.

Of course, if it was abused, not serviced every 30K, or used for heavy towing and not serviced under a severe service schedule , it doesn't matter what transmission is behind the engine, it will have problems at higher mileages.

I have a 1994 Camry and every time I forget to put up my sun shade or I am on a longer trip, and the sun is shining hot on the dashboard, the air conditioner stops working. If I am just starting the car and the sun has been beating down on the dash, the AC blows only cool, never cold. I have filled the freon and had the same result. If I am in the shade, or at night, the AC blows cold. This last time, on a long trip, the AC worked fine until it got hotter and the sun was overhead hitting the dashboard. The AC actually started blowing hot air. I turned the AC off, stopped the car and waited for 40 minutes. When I started the car again, the AC blew very cold. My mother had a Lexus that had a similar problem and had the AC worked on 5 different times with no results. Does anyone know what causes this, I was thinking that maybe it's a Toyota issue. Do they have some kind of thermostat in the dash?

I don't think it has too much to do with the dashboard except for the increased load on the system. It sounds like the system may be freezing up due to possibly a faulty thermostat in the evaporator case. You would really need to put some pressure gauges on it when the problem is present to determine just what is happening at the time.

Do you mean the expansion valve? or is there an actual thermostat in the evaporator case?

Yes, there should be a thermostat with a probe that inserts right into the evaporator that shuts the compressor off if the temp drops too low to prevent freeze up.

To add and just gotta ask some questions: Is compressor staying engaged?

Just how and why did you "fill with freon?" If overfull it will cut out from excessive pressures.

Are fan(s) working?

Can you get gauge readings?

If outer hub is cycling off and air goes warm on you - you may have a compressor clutch air gap that's excessive.

There's a lot more to MVAC (Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning) than meets the eye. I'm sure Hammer Time agrees with me on that one!

Hammer - we aren't there as you know and could miss something obvious if we were.

I was thinking clutch air gap. I don't bother with the feeler gauge any more and the spec is about .020. Can be checked by folding a standard biz card and while folded almost impossible to get into the gap. Open card should fall right thru it but I find it ok to be in the close side but not rubbing.

Not proven by me but of interest: Steel is MORE magnetic colder (what I've been told) and the clutch is an electro magnet. Can't say what % is gained or lost by each 10F degree increments but it exists! Molten iron/steel like the slag from cutting off exhaust parts won't pick up with a magnet! That's an extreme of course.

Also: Some (Thought non Toyotas though) seriously need voltage regulator (alternator) to hold close to 14v while running or won't engage clutches! That's one that fools the best of 'em!

Since we don't have pressures I think in this case the HPCO (high pressure cut out) or a thermal cut out is shutting down compressor as designed as we don't know how much refrigerant is in this or what the pressures are.
