hello
i'm brian i'm 19years old and i am hoping to begin work on a automotive technology associates degree very soon. i enjoy working with cars and just replaced a transmission with some help from my father in a 97 ford explorer.


anyway just last night i believe my clutch went out in my 2001 subaru outback manual 2 liter 4 cylinder hatchback with 160,000 miles on it. the day before i was parallel parking and the clutch pedal failed to pop back up after i shifted. instead it just stuck to the floor. i began using my foot to pop it back out and it was working alright for the next few drives like that; other than it taking along time to release and occasionally sticking. well last night i attempted to shift from neutral into 2nd and the pedal went straight to the floor with little pressure added. i pulled it up and found again there was no pedal pressure to be found. as it is now i am unable to shift but i can start the car.


can someone give me some advice on where to begin? i'm fairly excited to repair it and understand it could be a very intense job but i don't know where to start. i read on another forum it may just be something behind the dash or in the master/slave cylinders. i do have a service manual right here with me but i'd like a little direction before i begin.

i'd like to add that i know very little terms or anything. i believe the master cylinder controls the brakelines as i replaced one of those in a taurus but i don't know what a slave cylinder is.

You have a hydraulic clutch system so you have a master cylinder for the clutch also. The slave cylinder is the actuator at the other end of the hydraulic line mounted on the transmission that actuates the clutch.
You most likely have a leak in one or the other and you will have to determine which. I recommend changing both anyway because they usually fail close together.

Thank you!! yes i understand now after reading a bit into the service manual. i will begin testing the hydraulic system thoroughly hopefully this afternoon if i get some time. i'll keep you posted.

Assuming the reservoir has gone dry, just look for a small bit of wetness either at the back of the master in the engine compartment or under the dash where the rod comes through. If nothing there, look under the boot of the slave for any wetness to indicate a leak.

alright so i've run into a few difficulties now that i finally have been able to work on my vehicle. NUMBER 1: i was working on replacing my clutch master cylinder and when pulling out the pin that connects it to the pedal mechanism i was careless and the pin dissappeared. can this be replaced? i don't mean the bolt type pin but the thin wire that holds it in place.

NUMBER 2: The clutch master cylinder i ordered has a hole in the very back of it with a bronze ummmm bolty tubey type thing. the damaged one does not have this. i type in my car's info and i keep getting the cylinder with the bolty thing in back. this is what i bought http://www.drivewire.com/products/subaru-outback/clutch-master-cylinder/414/
It's exactly the same except for the boltey thing in back under the reservoir. i can't even find the right part. is this boltey thing a problem?

If your talking about that fitting at the very end of the cylinder, that's a bleeder. It's there to help you bleed the system after replacing it.

The clip you lost is just a hair pin clip and you can buy them at most auto parts stores

2003 Subaru WRX 2.0 Turbo, 120,000 miles. Car is completely stock, had clutch and transmission rebuilt 2yrs/25,000 miles ago. Rebuilt clutch regularly fought w/ me in 1st gear on takeoff. Was driving and when shifting from 1st to 2nd the clutch went straight to the floor. No popping, no grinding, no noise or vibration whatsoever. Clutch now will stay in original starting position or all the way to the floor, stays in those two positions firmly but no tension in between, can't put into gear. Any ideas where to start? Been told it could be the clutch, the master cylinder, or even a tension cable? Also, what all will i need to remove just to try to diagnose the problem if i can fix it myself? Thanks for your time and effort

Checked fluid level. Clutch reservoir was low but not empty. Added fluid and bled the system, problem still exactly the same

Is there an access cover you can look through to watch the slave cylinder pushrod move as the clutch pedal is pushed? It sounds like either the master cylinder is junk or the throwout bearing is.

That's funny because I went ahead and put on a new slave cylinder on someone's advice and the problem still exists. I think the old slave cylinder was actually working fine. Going to check the master cylinder next, is there an easy way to determine if the master cylinder is the culprit?

That's going to be real hard to determine now that you have opened the system and filled it full of air. You need to get an accurate diagnosis before throwing parts at it.
