My Car Wont Start :( Any Help?

Question From navid on My Car Wont Start :( Any Help?

My Chrysler neon(98) wont start. i think there is some problem with transmision. it starts fine when its parked in declined position but wont start if its parked in inclined or on even ground. i start it by shaking it farward and back and turning key at same time. appricate any help

Response From Sidom

There is either a Dodge or Plymouth Neon with a SOCH or DOCH 2.0 for that year. They're all pretty much the same but it would be nice to know which one to look at a wiring diagram.

I agree that it sounds like a connection problem & the shifting weight is why it cranks.

Personally I would start at the relay. All 4 legs tie in there & obviously one is going south, knowing which one would really narrow the search....

If you wanted to try some blind luck stuff 1st, have someone hold the key in the start position and start wiggling harnesses (cafefully) until it cranks. Also since facing down hill seem to work the best, slightly jack the engine/trans assembly forward & try it but this still won't point out the exact area of the problem......

I would start at the relay with a power probe (It's in the PDC, it's the easiest to get to & I'm lazy......)

Response From Mr.scotty

If it's an automatic transmission, try starting it in neutral.

Response From navid

it doesnt start in neutral as well :(

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Mr. Scotty was asking Automatic or Standard. If this doesn't crank at all it could be a neutral safety switch that has lost adjustment or a clutch switch that must have clutch pushed down or starter won't crank engine.

If cranking but not starting that's a different approach to isolate area of trouble so please be specific so we can help,

T

Response From navid

its automatic and it do not crank untill i move it farward and back.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

OK. Bit strange still so far. What noise or nothing when it doesn't crank? I'm still lost why moving an automatic makes any difference by moving it back and forth?

T

Response From navid

no noise at all. when i park it on decline position and remove my foot from break it move farward a few inches which normaly means it will start by it self next time but some times even that doesnt work.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

WAG (wild azz guess) There's one wire smaller gauge at the starter that when given voltage by key should light a test light at least but bet when really staying in "no crank" situation doesn't get power. If you can get this such that it stays like that for testing that will help a lot.

This moving car, position up or down facing making a difference strongly suggests that wire has a problem along the way, frayed even unseen somewhere and probably underhood.

Find the right wire at starter. Follow it back and it no doubt goes into plastic wiring covering with other wires back to where it has power with starter requested (need helper) and if you get power on that wire along the way or find it pinched by prior work or just coincidence from new but took this long fix/splice it there. Bet is inside the insulation of the wire likely and wire may look good but be stretchy right at problem spot. If you do the dirty by piecing wire SEAL THE POKE HOLE! I really don't like poking wire insulation but it might be the only way so keep it if you try that to a minimum. Decent way is use a very sharp plain 12v test light and seal with liquid electrical tape sold even at hardware stores to seal up insulation. Moisture if allowed in will destroy the wire (over time) if not done well.

DO BE CAREFUL AS ENGINE MAY START UP WHILE TESTING - STAY AWAY FROM MOVING PARTS WITH YOUR BODY PARTS!

Other ideas anyone?

Tom

Response From Hammer Time

Maybe it's not the act of moving that makes it start but shifting it to neutral.

97 Dodge/Chrysler fuel pump

Question From JPGuz003 on 97 Dodge/Chrysler fuel pump

1997 Dodge/Chrysler Neon 2.0 with 134000
Fuel pump went out, checked all fuses and relays and all are fine so I changed the pump and everything was fine and then the pump stopped whining and working, then checked all fuses and relays and they are fine so I dunno if the pump is faulty or there is another problem

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

Well double check your power & ground like you did before. If both are good then you probably got a bad pump..... If it was an aftermarket pump then thats not unheard of, there are some cheap brands out there........

Recently bought used car

Question From Guest on Recently bought used car

I bought a 2000 Chrysler Neon Friday afternoon. The dealer apparently e-tested, and certified it for me. Saturday a guy pulls up beside me and told me my break lights were out... took it to the mechanic who told me the break light switch needed to be replaced. Told him I just purchased he asked me who did the safety - seeing as break lights are quite a big deal. My quesiton is - When a car is certified/safety what's included? It's been 4 days now and a friend said that he thinks I need front end struts? What are my rights considering I just purchased the car from a used car dealer who charged me extra for certification/safety and emissions?

Response From 99voyager

Saftey involves any equipment that makes your vehicle safe hint lights brakes ect your right is in most states you have the right to take the car back to the dealer and have them repair the problems and recheck that all saftey iteams are working properly the lemon law does not apply to used cars only new. Your certified used car should have come with a package showing you your rights and what that certification covers.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

A bulb or switch could blow a minute after a test. Most safety items wouldn't wear out in a few days like that. Struts if only worn as far as ride is concerned and not unsafe would be a gray area. There is some responsibility of the shop that certified it I would think? Ask away. Things and laws would vary some by location. If the place gave is passing marks for safety and it would fail now what good is that system at all?
