airbag light on dash

Question From psamp48 on airbag light on dash

1997 Chevrolet Lumina
3.1 litre
125000 kms

I replaced the rack and pinion on the car, all works well except the red airbag light is constantly on. Any ideas?

Response From Hammer Time

If you let the steering wheel turn while it was disconnected, then you probably broke the clockspring in the steering column.

Response From psamp48

Where do I find this spring?

Response From Hammer Time

As I said, "in the steering column.

If you have no experience in working around Airbags, I suggest take it to a shop as they have the power to kill you.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

I'm sorry but if you don't know what a clockspring is and where it's located, then you are not at all familiar with airbags and their dangers. I think you should have someone more experienced do this.

Response From psamp48

I am comfortable working on steering columns, I have done it in the past. I am wondering where in the column this spring would be located. I am well aware of the dangers of airbags.

Response From Hammer Time

Yes, the system is disabled as long as the light is on. It's removing the airbag itself that is dangerous. It has an explosive charge.

Response From psamp48

Is it ok to drive as is?

Response From psamp48

I have done it before, unhooked the battery before doing anything. I just googled clock spring, I now know what it is and why it broke. I have re/re them before, I just wasn't aware of what it was called.

Chevrolet Lumina weird electrical problem

Question From bdey85 on Chevrolet Lumina weird electrical problem

Okay so I have a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina that I need to make last. Just the other day this issue started happening. Weirdest thing I've ever seen and never heard of it before. Asked a certified mechanic friend of mine about it and he's never even heard of or seen this problem. For some reason, when I turn on the air fan, not the a/c because that's disconnected because of a bad compressor, but just the fan, the speedometer jumps to 80mph and bounces between 70 and 80. And if the radio is on, the radio will get about 5 notches louder. When I turn the fan off, the speedometer does not work at all and drops to 0 and the radio will be at it's normal level. All the other gauges on the dash work properly, it's just the speedometer and the radio having issues.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Fan could have a ground problem and the power is feeding back through those items.

I've seen blower fans act as generator when they are spinning down after being shut off and causing codes to pop in ABS modules.

Does the speedometer operate at all?

What is the voltage drop at the ground side of the blower to the battery negative with the blower running?

1995 Chevrolet Lumina LS 3.4 LV6

Question From skiiboy25 on 1995 Chevrolet Lumina LS 3.4 LV6

I recently took my car into a GM dealer to have it serviced becasue the " Service Engine Soon" Light was on. They hooked it up to the only to find out that it wouldn't communicate with the PCM. I was told I need a new PCM and MEMCAL. I dont want to pay the $490.00 so does anyone know where I can get these parts cheaper. And What are they, I'm not car savy?

Thanks

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

May I suggest you get another reading? I wouldn't spring that $$ with that diag so far. Major parts outlets are offering code checks for free and if the same problem comes up fine but it could be a problem with the connection - yours or the one that was used,

Question From psamp48 on 1995 Lumina won't start

1995 Chevrolet Lumina
3.1 litre 293,000 kms

My son's 1995 Lumina died in traffic yesterday afternoon. He had it towed home where I looked at it. It has gas (good fuel pressure), spark, and the battery is good. It turns over but doesn't seem to fire at all. Is there a simple way to check if the injectors are firing, or if the timing chain has slipped.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Don't overdo it but does it sound normal while cranking? If it jumped a tooth or two on timing chain they sound funky and would have low compression. I don't know of this engine to eat timing chains so easy but anything is possible. It is an interference engine and will damage it badly if it really does jump the chain too much - valves would crash into pistons.

See if it will respond for a few seconds with starting fluid down throttle body. If that works then check injectors with a noid light to see if they are getting juice.

I don't have the spec handy but what is the fuel pressure?

T

Response From psamp48

Tom,

Thanks for the response, it does sound normal when cranking. I haven't checked the actual pressure yet, but I will do that tomorrow. The car just died during an idle at a stop light, so my instinct is that it wouldn't be the valve timing, but who knows. Don't they usually run rough for a while? I will try the starter fluid as well. I don't want to spend a lot of time (or money) on the car, as it has numerous other problems as well.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Yes - get an actual fuel pressure reading and that it can hold. Just KOEO (key on engine off) has to have enough. Injected cars are fussy that it be in spec which I hope someone will post as I don't know it! Starting fluid test will be informative,

T

Response From psamp48

The manual says between 42-47 psi

Response From Hammer Time

The real manual says exactly what I posted

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Here's what's on that circuit

Response From psamp48

I checked the fuel pressure - it is good. It runs with the starter fluid. I found out that the fuel injector 15 amp fuse keeps blowing. It even blows with the injector harness undone. Where do you think the short would be?

Response From psamp48

Do you think it would be the camshaft or crankshaft sensors, as I have the injector harness undone?

Response From Hammer Time

That's what you have to find out. You have to just keep disconnecting things until the short goes away. It could be a bare wire along the way too.
It's easier is you substitute a circuit breaker for the fuse until you find the short.

Response From psamp48

It's the camshaft sensor. It runs with it unplugged. There are no codes (MIL). Can I drive it until I get another one?

Response From Hammer Time

Have you tried starting it a second time? Some of them will run until shut off and not restart without a cam sensor.

Response From psamp48

It does start multiple times.I will be junking the car soon but I need to drive it for a week or so.
Thanks for all your help, I am always impressed with your expertise.

Response From Hammer Time

I don't think the cam sensor is that expensive. Although is may be running, it is not running normally. Without the cam sensor, you do not have sequential injector firing and they will all fire simultaneously without that sensor and that will rob you of power and fuel mileage.

Response From Hammer Time

Fuel System Pressure 40.5 to 47.0 psi . With engine "OFF", ignition "ON", and the fuel pump running. Fuel system pressure with engine running at idle speed will be lower.
