I have a 2000 KIA Sephia It started just kind of chugging up hills now its doing it all the time. First I thought it was my transmission or my over drive was stuck because my check engine light came on and so did my overdrive light. But at the same time it feels like it just not getting gas. I also do not know where the fuel filter is located. Any ideas because I bought this car because it was cheap and I don't have alot of money to fix it so if anyone has had the same problem and can help me to narrow it down that would be awesome.

My 2000 sephia just did the same thing, found spark plug under the left coil covered in oil, there is an o-ring that sometimes goes bad. But I figure you fixed it by now.

I have a 200 Kia sportage. Mine did the same thing. I drove it that way for awhile trying to figure out what was wrong with it. When I finally did it was to late and had to do serious repair to the engine. It was one of the cadillac converters. I think the front one. It was the cheaper of the two anyway (thank god).

If your car isn't running well it probably is overworking the converter and can and will kill a good one. I suggest not wasting time to fix why the car is running poorly as the converter was the result of a problem not usually the cause, Happy Motoring, T

I like Tom have no experience on Kia's however my saturn has the same symtoms you listed and Here's a list of things to check or have checked:

Try this when car is COMPLETELY COLD start the car get out and put your hand(you may need the help of arag to plug the pipe) over the tailpipe If the car stalls out you may have a plugged up catylitic converter($60-180) or it might be as Tom said your injectors might be fouled(see his thread) or it may also be the EGR valve(this was the case on my saturn)

Ok let's give it a shot. First I must admit there are not many KIAs around me and I never worked on or even ridden in one but basics are basics so let's get started:

Near free things to check:

Get the check engine code from a place like AutoZone that will do that for free.

If this car will stumble get a helper and put a load on the running engine and at night look for electrical arching (any hood light off) and you can spray window cleaner on known plug wires the coil etc which should make bad components behave worse. Clean water doesn't work well at that trick. Stand to the side NOT in front of it for this test if you try it.

Try some highly recommended fuel injector cleaner and isopropyl dry gas. Half the amount twice can be better than all at once.

Note: Don't wait too long to solve this as other expensive parts could be damaged.

Fuel filters are generally low and near the gas tank but might be under the hood.

Hit back with what you find if anything. T

I have a 2000 Kia Sephia with the 1.8 Dohc engine
It all of a sudden started to stall and run real rough. I changed the plugs and it wouldnt start back up.
I changed the catalytic converters, both O2 sensors, Plugs, Plug wires and coils, Camshaft pos sensor. and it still runs like crap. I have to put my foot to the floor to start it and then it idles rough, as a matter of fact it runs rough period.
I checked compression, and i have 200 at all four cylinders. I have what would ppear to be great spark. After it runs for a bit, the plugs have black deposits all over them.powdery black sout.
Also when I connect the OBD2 to my MAC Taskmaster, it tells me ,
Check all grounds
ignition wires unable to communicate. So, I am unable to tell what is wrong with it but the check engine light comes on... Please help

Well...check all your fuses for the no comunication problem with your OBD scan tool. It is usually the cig lighter or the acces power plug fuse that is associated with this. But check them all go be sure. The black soot on the plugs indicates that it is running rich. Way to much fuel. this could be caused by a whole host of things, so go after the OBD no comut problem first. This way you can pull codes and have a place to start on the rest of the problems. Let us know if the fuse is not the issue. If it is report back with codes and we can help. Good luck

I have a 2003 kia spectra that, I'll admit, I let get too low on gas fairly often. Yesterday, I filled the tank up ( it was on E), and I started hearing a rattling sound when I stepped on the gass. This lasted a few miles, then stopped. I turned off the car and started it again without problems. Then, this am, when I was trying to start it...it would turn over fine, then lose power(idle rough, then stop). My husband got it to work ok if you keep revving the engine when it tries to die. After it warms up, it drives fine. Oh, and sometimes when you rev the engine, it missfires ( at least that's what he says it's doing.) He thinks it is a problem with the fuel filter or pump because I let the gas get too low too often...or that I got some "bad gas". I got some gas treatment. My husband thinks it will resolve if it is just some bad gas...I'm just not sure what to do. HELP!!!

If it didn't quit running from being low that probably isn't the immediate issue. Best not to do that as the fuel itself helps keep the fuel pump cooler and I find they will last longer. If it's been a while just up and change the fuel filter as that's just good maintenance.

Bad gas?? Who knows?? I am beginning to think that there is too much incentive to lower the amount of actual fossil fuel with additives that should work but I think we'll pay for that.

The odds are this is a separate problem. How long has it been since a regular tune-up type service has been done?

Anytime it doesn't run well for a while for any reason the computer should be storing a code and you should get a reading to help,

thank you for the reply. got a tune up a couple of months ago and replaced the timing belt. Now the Kia isn't running....starts but stalls out when put in drive. My husband and father in law now think it is getting air in the fuel line or something...catalytic converter, maybe?? I'm taking it to the shop Monday. Again, thank you for the help. I might need your opinion on what the mechanic tells me :)

Usually if it only dies when it is placed in gear, that usually indicates a problem with the torque converter. By any chance does the check engine/service engine soon/ picture of engine light come on? After reading again, there is a possibility nit could be a bad engine coolant temperature sensor. Or maybe a idle speed control. Just some suggestions.

Hello I have a 98 kia sportage that has a 2.0l engine and about 113,000 miles on it. I bought the car four weeks ago and for the last week it will completely shut down after about 20-30 minutes of driving. If i try to restart right away it will not start but it really tries to start. if i let it sit for about half an hour it will restart. i have already replaced the fuel filter the relays and the fuel hoses on it, and it is still doing it. i took it to autozone and a diagnostic was run on it and it gave me error codes knock sensor,o2 sensor, and crankshaft position sensor. HELP!!!!!! what do i check next?, i was told it could be my fuel pump or that it could be the ignition, or a catalytic converter issue.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be test during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.



Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.


2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.


3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.


4) Perform a complete compression test and record the results. All cylinders should be over 120lbs in most cases and all be within 10% of each other.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.



The crank sensor code makes thatt sensor real suspect but I still wouldn't replace it without testing spark and injector pulse first.

Ok I have a serious issue I can not figure out! I'm from Arkansas and its understandable that when it's cold outside a car will have the tendency to lag a little in horse power till they warm up. Ok well When I start the car in the morning and let it warm up I back down my drive and press the brake it takes my entire weight to stop the vehicle. Every time I try to back out the brake does this. That's not all!! When I come to a complete stop then try and go again it feels as though gas is not getting delivered. My car rolls forward VERY SLOWLY which in turn makes me a danger to other drivers. The other day I got off the interstate and when I got to the stop sign to turn left I pressed the gas and NOTHING!!!! It rolled in the middle of the road and I almost got hit by both lanes of traffic. Then after 5-7 seconds of this stall the gas finally delivers and it shoved me forward so hard that I almost it the wall!! THAT'S NOT ALL!!! When I am on the interstate I have to FORCE the Kia to shift so it will go faster. It has no chance of maintaining speed, It will stop accelerating at 45, 65, & 75 MPH. I have to force it to shift to keep going faster or even the speed limit. THAT'S NOT ALL!! When I go up the smallest of hills I loss 5-15 MPH (depending on height of climb). PLEASE HELP!! I am desperate! I don't have the money to keep putting into this and I don't have the money to buy a new vehicle! I have gotten a new catalytic converter, new timing belt, completely new exhaust system, new exhaust manifold and O2 sensor, even new tires to improve gas mileage but NOTHING has worked!! Next we are going to try replacing all the filters! But any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

the connection here is the brakes! This should use engine vacuum for the power boost and I suspect there is a problem there. This would cause the brakes to need much extra force to stop and any leak would throw off the engine performance.

Take a look behind the master cylinder for a round thing - that's the booster. Follow the vacuum hose from it to the engine and see if that looks good and is in place. There should be like an elbow check valve at the booster where the hose attaches and that could be bad/cracked - who knows. If you plug this vacuum source off as just a test the engine will probably run well and have full power. Remember this is just to test as you won't have power assist for the brakes. They are NOT very good without the power assist but should still work but with extreme force. That's not too safe so if you try that do it completely out of harms way like an empty parking lot (ya right - this time of year!) or you may just notice with it still.

It could be the booster itself if everything else looks good.
