2003 Honda CR-V: Recommend brand for catalytic converter replacement?

Question From ppetraki on 2003 Honda CR-V: Recommend brand for catalytic converter replacement?

Year of vehicle: 2003
Make of vehicle: Honda
Model of vehicle: CR-V EX
Engine size: 2.3L
Mileage/Kilometers: 117000

My car threw a code over the weekend and the dealer confirmed that it's the cat and it likely needs replacement.
They're quoting me $1600 dollars which is outrageous. After
browsing the web I found several cat replacements starting at $300 from several manufacturers. Can anyone share their
experience with these OEM replacement parts?

http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/?N=9190+1631+10608+4294962766+11921

Originally the dealer quoted me 2K saying the part itself
was 1600 dollars. Sigh... Thanks for your time.

Original equipment parts will be the best here and worth it in the long run. What is needed is to find out why it needs this as most converters are killed by a fault with engine operation, sensors, wrong fuel mixture etc., and it would just fail again!

If rusted beyond repair that would be different,

I can get you the code it threw later this evening. The visual inspection is pretty grim, It's rusted pretty good and had already lost one heat shield with the other hanging by a thread.
Gotta love salty new england roads.

"Lovely New England Roads" That says it all. I'm in Rusto-chusetts and damn it's fast to mess things up! The heat shields can be fudged and refastened but they wouldn't be throwing a code. If there was a hole from rust - usually at connections those might be fixable with a good welder (I'm just marginal at welding) which is a funky metal and not just plain base steel which welds easily.

No matter - with that expense lurking and IF ENIGNE IS RUNNING JUST FINE - I'd surely test out the converters themselves and try to save the rusted ends or a good (got one in Marlborough, MA) muffler shop can make up the gasket-ed or flanged ends if all else is well. Still not cheap but not 2 grand!

Some places aren't going to want to deal with it short of nice new stuff as it could come back early and they don't want that nor do you I'm sure.

Still suggest real Honda parts if the whole thing has to go. Work with the shop on how to do this right and as reasonable as possible which still might end up the big buck route. Hang on!

Response From Hammer Time

I have used a lot of aftermarket Converters and most of the time, they work without a problem. There are some that don't though. Many of the issues have to do with capacity. Some of the aftermarkets are just manufactured right in the fringe with no room for error. There isn't much question that the OEM will be higher quality. The question is whether it has to be the OEM to work. The risk is if you have to buy both, you didn't save anything.

Honda Civic 2001 Catalytic Coverter Question

Question From Guest on Honda Civic 2001 Catalytic Coverter Question

I have an 8 year old civic that runs perfectly. Today the catalytic coverter COVER rusted through and fell off. I plan on having the car for a minimum of two more years. I live in the northeast, so its cold and wet. Should I get it fixed?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

If it is just the heat shield that fell off? The heat shield is there to keep you from starting a fire when parked over tinder-dry material. The catalytic converter gets VERY hot. Don't think that's an issue, at least at this time of year. Actually, it would be a good ice melter where I'm at.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

As Loren said they do make a lot of heat which is why shield is there. If you still have the parts the broke they can be put back on effectively. Some you lose just the bottom one which is bad enough, but it that is also part of holding the top shield to underside of the car it's VERY important to repair it.

Check - I'm not sure if some aftermarket kits are available for a decent replacement - they should be because the alternative can mean a whole new pipe that included this and the converter - monster bucks for such a cheap thing really!

Folks in the rust belts: Try to tend to these when they just make annoying noise and save the parts as said IMO they can be refastened safely,

Good point! I didn't think of the upper shield. Had a Ford catch the carpeting on fire from the cat overheating.

'04 Honda Accord smells like burnt rubber after battle with the snow!

Question From mz123 on '04 Honda Accord smells like burnt rubber after battle with the snow!

Long story short, my bf and I got stuck in a ditch in the snow the other night and a local tried (but failed) to help us get out. Well, the guy kept putting the car in neutral and SLAMMING on the gas (he was stupid, apparently) and when the car was in drive he slammed on the pedal some more, making the RPMs go into the red zone (i dont know all that much about cars, but I'm fairly certain that's NOT good). The car was smoking up a storm, and this TERRIBLE burnt rubber smell permeated the inside of the car. At the time, I figured it was just from the friction of the tires. I finally dragged the stupid guy out of the driver's seat, but we eventually had to get my bf's dad to pull us out w/ his truck. Anywho, it's been 2 days and the noxious burnt rubber smell is STILL in the car. Could this indicate a bigger problem, or is the smell just stuck in the car?
The car doesn't sound any different, or feel any different, but I wanna make sure.

It is a 2004 Honda Accord. I am not sure the engine size or mileage.

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

This is just a guess, mind you; but the catalytic converter may have become so hot, that some of the body’s undercoating or the carpeting underlay started to melt? Converter’s run very hot normally and beating the crap out of the throttle, will just add fuel to the fire and turn the converter super nova hot.
I would check all the fluid levels, watch the gages and maybe even go into a shop and let them have a look at the underside of the vehicle.
If this is just from the exhaust getting that hot; you may be stuck with this smell, until it dissipates on its own?
Again if this is the cause; he (roadside hero) has likely shortened the life of the catalytic converter; only time will tell; the damage is done.

Dan.

Another guess from a snowman:

#1. Spinning wheels is usually futile and harmful to the car. You may be smelling burnt rubber. I know it's aggravating to get stuck but going nuts on the vehicle is a poor choice.

#2. Understand that a spinning tire has infinitely less traction than one that isn't spinning and slipping. It's the principles of Dynamic and Static friction. Once you spin a wheel enough it will dig a nice slippery cup to hold the car like a mooring holds a boat.

#3. Know when it's over and will require more work like shovel out a path for wheels, sand applied, salts of sorts.

#4. Tricks that may help. Put vehicle in forward with no spinning wheels. If it can go an inch hold brakes right there. Slowly go to reverse (none of that back and forth fast stuff) and see how far you can go forward - hold brakes again and repeat till you may get some momentum to get out of that now way to slipper hole just dug!

#4a FWD and Anti-Lock brakes can help. Tap brake pedal which may allow for the other wheel (usually only one spins frantically) and the other may get some momentary grip. No high speed spinning as it's counter productive. Steering in FWD can cut a new angle and help.

* Each situation is different and will be treated differently. If a lost cause for the moment try to get pulled out, via another vehicle AND someone who knows where to attach stuff/tow straps etc., and avoid possible nasty expensive damage.

Have stuff with you for this in vehicle if venturing out. You just don't know what may happen. Sometimes the weight of vehicle could be reduced or eliminated by snow packing under the car so that would take removing it and or a tow,

hole in exhaust pipe

Question From kalesh12 on hole in exhaust pipe

92 honda accord lx

I have a hole in the exhaust pipe between the catalytic converter and muffler. is this urgent repair? could I just patch, and how temporary are patches? looks like the pipes are welded on this older moldel (or just really rusted)... if i need to replace should I simply cut out section with hole and replace and clamp?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Your best bet is to just take it to an exhaust shop and let them fix it. They can fix it cheaper than you and do a much better job. You can't patch it but you can replace just a section sometimes. It often has to be cut and welded so it's not a DIY type job.
