I have a 1995 Cadillac Concours and while driving i hit something in the road and my car cut off.
we looked underneath and what i hit was some type of rigging brace and it ripped the catalytic converter shield plate off but nothing was leaking,
I had it towed about 5 miles and still we found no leaks, I checked all of the fuses and relays that I could find and the car cranks like it wants to start and the fuel pump comes on when I turn the key forward but what is weird to me is that when you turn the key forward there is a clicking noise under the gas peddle and it stops if you press down on the gas the peddle, the noise gets faint if you lift the gas peddle, any ideas? thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Something that is this complex probably needs to be looked at in person. I would take it to a mechanic, cause I am outta ideas without seeing it?

i have a 1981 cadillac superior hearse with the cadillac 368 ci. motor. My problem is that it will start and run but it has no power, takes forever to get up to 55 mph, there is a strong smell of gasoline like the motor is flooding, and keeps stalling out at low rpms. I have changed the plugs and wires, set the timing to factory specs but that didnt help. it has an electronic carb with no adjustment screws like the older rochester carbs. any help will be appreciated

First thing that came to mind is ..try advancing the distributor and see if it gets more power...
Maybe we have a timing chain/gear issue.
Also check the pickup coil wiring inside the distributor..fray and cause driveability issue.
Catalytic converter restricted?
Strong smell of fuel?...have you checked for leaks. hoses,lines,pump...
Fuel delivery problem ,as in not enough fuel can cause car to take forever to get power,especially right after cold start.
Bad carburetor?
Has the car been sitting any length of time?
Take a fuel sample?

i replaced thr everything on the distributer including [plugs and wires, cap, coil ,pickup,rotor i have tried advancing the timing in 2 degree increments to no avail seeing as it seems to die on hills i will check the fuel pump

To add..

I had an Oldsmobile back when that had a condition similar...took forever to get up to speed...I could get out and walk faster...LOL
....but it had a lean misfire to it after cold start and big time driveability issue cold..would fall flat on its face on hard acceleration,had to ease the gas to get to speed ....not as bad when warm but still noticable...

I found the steel fuel line back near the pump area that had a slight split in it...never ever showed a sign of a leak..I traced the line front to rear and couldn't see any sign of a problem....ran it on an external fuel source,in those days you could,..problem cleared...
So I removed all the lines and inspected and found the split...man it was so small ,barely could see it...put on all new lines,steel and rubber....
Ran like a champ after that...
My point is...sometimes that even tho you don't see a leak,it can still be a fuel delivery /volume problem...

There so many possibilities that could be causing this; it hard to know where to begin.
Is the automatic choke coming off all the way? If not that could explain the fuel smell and low speed stalling, plus the interlock for the “four barrel” would still be on, holding the secondary throttle closed causing the lack of power.
The power valve in the carb might be stuck/seized in one position again causing a low rpm flood and the loss in power, due to lack of fuel for the secondary’s.
The throttle position sensors were famous for failing with these carbs; they placed the sensor inside the carb, in the float bowl. Fuel would find its way into the sensor causing them to either go open or short to reference voltage. Regardless of which way it failed the computer wouldn’t know how far your foot was or wasn’t into the throttle; thus not adjusting timing or changing the dwell on the power valve’s solenoid on time.
Then it might not even be a carb problem; possibly a restricted exhaust/plugged converter; if exhaust can’t get out air can’t get in.
Then there’s engine mechanical; ie a timing chain that is very loose or jumped a tooth. You can still set ignition timing by cranking the distributor around but the valve timing would still be late/retarded.
Just a few thought off the top.

Open book of possibilities. Try taking a intake manifold vacuum reading at idle and again at no load at 2,000 RPMs as they should be the same. What is the vacuum reading at idle. If not real close to 18Hg and steady note just what it does and report back.

That would help narrow down exhaust restriction, timing issues, etc.,

Hi everyone I have a 1993 Cadillac Deville with 104,000 miles with a 4.9 at low speeds hot or cold when i let off the gas and re apply the gas the car bogs down and shakes real a little bit when holding my foot on the gas trying to give it more gas the car has a rebuilt transmission that was done 7 months ago but what is wierd it bogs down at like 25mph and up and once goes lower then 25mph and u feel it down shifts it goes away then once up to 25mph or more the car bogs down again the car has had a full tune up egr valve replaced tps sensor replaced everything has been replaced fuel filter, catalytic converter had a compresssion test done everything was fine please help me oh and also I have no diagnostic codes.

You may get lucky . A lot of caddy's have these symptoms . The following repair has fixed several dozen caddy's for me . Follow the main ground wire from battery to the front of engine . It should mount on a stud just in front of the starter . Remove cable and stud , clean everything including block REAL GOOD . Clean battery terminals . Let us know if it helps.

There's no guarantee that this will fix. On older caddy's if this ground gets the least bit loose or corroded it will drive the sensors on the eng crazy, anytime you put additional electrical demand i.e. accelerating, turning on ac etc . The eng goes bonkers.

Hi everyone im still having trouble but let me explain a little better now when the car bogs down and shakes a lil it feels like the car is in cruise control for a second or two because the car moves by it's self when it's bogging down without my foot on the pedal it feels like the car is in torque converter lock up but at the wrong times they had told me after the rebuilt the transmission that they didn't change any of the solenoids but what do you think please help thanks.

Anything could be but the question is did you do what R-T suggested?

By that if confused, it means follow battery ground cable to the engine and clean that up - wire brush, sandpaper - whatever works to get that perfect. Then I'd look to find a strap going from either battery directly or engine to probably firewall to ground it securely as well. Block and metal of car's body need good ground.

R-T has mentioned this quirk a few times here for funky acting problems and that was the solution to most from what I've read from those who came back to say one way or the other.

If you can't find these then add a good one out of every-thing's way from block to body. There are enough existing items to double up use of a bolt for that. No harm done if it fails to fix the problem.

Verbose as I am, body will get some ground thru silly things like throttle cable housings and little stuff but not enough. Most of that stuff is well insulated NOT to be a ground.

Agreed - it's too bad the sensors in trans were not all done when it was rebuilt but this could rule out this part,

NO! Positive goes to the starter! Better said - starter solenoid which is on top of it on most. Look at battery for indications of which is which - words like "neg" or just the "-" minus sign, color is frequently black for negative, red for positive but could be both black if changed since new??

Don't get those confused or hooked up wrong. Don't have enough headache medicine for what that can do

I have a 2000 Cadillac Eldorado with 63,000 miles. The car has been perfect up until this point. Yesterday after work, I filled up with premium unleaded fuel and my car drove home just fine. This morning while leaving for work, I noticed the car was running very rough. Particularly when i was backing out of my driveway, and accelerating. Once up to speed, the car seemed fine. But accelerating after a full stop, it's very shaky, the whole inside of my car vibrates. Also, the service engine light is flashing, but only when the car is in motion. Once idle, the flashing stops but the light remains lit. Any ideas what could be wrong? Bad gas? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You have a severe misfire for some reason and you need to find out why. You may have gotten some water with that tank of fuel. The flashing light means to stop driving it because you are damaging the Catalytic Converter.

We had a family friend come out and put a computer on the car and it said that spark plugs 6 and 8 were misfiring. So we replaced all the spark plugs and boots, and its running a little better, but still not good. Hopefully we can get him to come out and check again

The computer didn't tell you anything was wrong with any spark plugs. What you likely had were codes P0306 and P0308 which means the computer detected misfires on those cylinders but a tech still needs to determine the actual cause. It could be an ignition problem, could be a fuel problem. That is what the tech is for.
