Question From chickenhouse on 2002Buick Century V6 103K

Runs fine, ses light on shows code P0420. I'm thinkin plugs & wires?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Nope, that's a bad Catalytic Converter. It could have been a misfire that ruined the Cat but your looking at a new Cat now.

Response From chickenhouse

Thanks, will inform.

Response From Hammer Time

You can get an aftermarket cat installed at an exhaust shop for usually around $200 to $250.

Response From chickenhouse

Yea, that;s kinda what I was thinking. My brother passed 4 years ago & we have inherited the maintainence on all belongings for his widow, in the 70's. Maybe put plugs & wires on then a cat. Will see how her finances work out. Thanks Hammer

Response From chickenhouse

Spoke with her today, the cat was replaced less than 1 year ago. Again, car runs great. Does not feel like any misfire but the way the coils fire it would be hard to detect. Will put in plugs & wires next.

Response From Hammer Time

No, that code can be nothing but a bad cat.

Response From chickenhouse

Hammer- I was going on the theory that if the cat only lasted less than a year, replacing the cat will be temporary because the plugs may be bad allowing unburned gas to stop up the cat. Was not looking to cure the ses light with a tune up.

Response From Hammer Time

OH, OK
In that case you would be right. If you have a bad misfire or if it's burning coolant, it will wipe out the cat in pretty short order.

Response From chickenhouse

Up date, gave the car back to her. Running fine. Seems the ses light has been on since she replaced the cat. No one shut it off. I don't have an obd2 & battery disconnect is of no use. At least she dosen't mind the light. Thankx Hammer.

Response From Hammer Time

How did you read the code? Whoever read the code should have been able to clear it. If she has an Autozone in the area, they will read and clear it for free.

Response From chickenhouse

I took it too Autozone & had them scan it. In Heber Springs AR, they are not allowed to reset the computer.

Response From Sidom

Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes, turn the headlights on & pump the brk pedal about 20 times & then hook it back up.....That should clear the light.

Response From chickenhouse

HEY- I'll try it! Do I have to hold a coat hanger in my left hand out the window, right foot in the glove box & well, you know. Just kidding. I will try this. Thanks sidom!

Response From Hammer Time

HEY- I'll try it! Do I have to hold a coat hanger in my left hand out the window, right foot in the glove box & well, you know.

That works best when done in a thunder storm. It erases all memory, including your own...................LOL

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Try burying a dishrag in the moonlight. Works every time. Ooooops. That's for warts.

Response From chickenhouse

NO CRAP! She was talking about that when I gave her the car back!! You guys know each other or just go to the same "old wives tale " school?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

>>"old wives tale " <<
Hey, don't knock it 'til you try it! Of course, if your neighbors see you doing it, you may have some 'splainin' to do.

Response From chickenhouse

Trust me, I know. Will get the car back next week. Thanks guys

Response From Sidom

Do I have to hold a coat hanger in my left hand out the window,
Actually that's trick #2.... Disconnect both cables & touch them together, if they are to short & won't reach you can use a wrench or COATHANGER to bridge the gap....... . . .. In a pinch I use that one...... It's faster. . . . Either one, besides erasing codes resets all adaptive memorys to factory defaults.... Basically might drive a little different for a couple of days until the comp relearns..........

Response From Double J

Here in Illinois, they're not allowed to clear any codes either.

They do for me when i'm there, but normally they won't .

Response From chickenhouse

That's bout as dumb as dry counties- in which I live! Sorry, got off topic.

Response From Hammer Time

That's strange. They do everywhere else.

03 Century codes 0134 and 0135

Question From comnavguy on 03 Century codes 0134 and 0135

This 03 Buick Century with the 3400 engine and 136,000 miles has shown codes 0134 and 0135. A new catalytic converter was installed several months ago.

Today we replaced the O2 sensor 1/1 - the sensor on the exhaust manifold in front of the cat converter and erased the codes. The car was driven less than 5 miles and the MIL light came back on.

What can be the problem?

Response From Hammer Time

Did both codes come back?

Response From comnavguy Top Rated Answer

Both codes did come back. We learned that the heater ckt on the O2 sensor is blowing a fuse. Do you have a wiring diagram for that circuit? I checked the Haynes manual, but could find nothing there.

Response From Hammer Time

You have a 3.1 not a 3.4

Response From comnavguy

You are truly a gentleman and scholar. Thank you for the schematic. I knew it was a 3100 even as I was typing 3400. One day I'll get my stuff together, and when I do I hope I'll be able to liff it up.

Thanks again. You're a lifesaver.

When I find the short, I'll post my fix.

Response From Hammer Time

There aren't many places it can short. My money is on the sensor itself.

Response From comnavguy

Your bet is exactly right. The front sensor, the one in front of the catalytic converter, (bank 1/1) had an intermittent short on the heater. Tap on it and the fuse blew. Sometimes when we measured it for continuity, it checked OK.

In addition to the codes, during idle, the RPM would oscillate and on acceleration from stop, there was a slight hesitation or stumble. NOW, it's purring like a kitten.

Once again, like Mighty Mouse you saved the day.

Thanks.

Response From Hammer Time

Haha ........ Now you're showing your age.

Or you watch a lot of Nickelodeon .........LOL

transmission rattle

Question From saint056 on transmission rattle

I have a 2004 Buick rainier that has a rattle from the torque converter area and the vehicle looses foward momentum after a few minutes. If I turn off the engine and let it sit for a minute restart it and it will drive fine for a few minutes then rattle and loose power. Is this a torque converter issue or something much worse?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

saint; Probably should try to get this up on a lift to determine where the rattle is coming from. Torque converters seldom will make a noise. Catalytic converters can break up, causing a rattle, and a severe loss of power.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

saint; Probably should try to get this up on a lift to determine where the rattle is coming from. Could be a catalytic converter that has broken up and plugging off the exhaust. Torque converters very seldom make noise. Flex-plates can crack and make noise and vibration, but won't affect 'power'.

Response From saint056

Already done that. the rattle is comming from the torque converter area. When I called the dealer about pricing one, he said they never have problems with the converters. Not to mention the car would not loose power from the tranny is something was loose on ther car.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

saint; When you say "loose forward momentum", please be more specific. Does the engine speed up, but the vehicle doesn't? Can you 'floor' it and not accelerate? Any vibration noticed with the engine idling?

Response From saint056

Sorry I wasn't describing it well enough. It acts like a car with a manual transmission does when the clutch goes out. It revs to high RPMs when the throttle is depressed, but goes nowhere. I looked up the M30 transmission and it says that it has a torque clutch converter. I have never heard the term before. Anyway, the sound is definately comming from the very front where the torque converter is and is sounds like there is something lose in there. But it only happens after the car has been running for a few minutes. Any suggestions? And by the way, I think getting it out is going to be crazy hard, as there is almost no room to get to the top bolts of the tranny. And there is no vibration. Thanks for any help.

Thomas

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Thomas; This doesn't sound good. Sounds like you have nailed it right on the head. Really rare for this to happen, as far as I know. Maybe, one of the guys in forum more familiar with automatics can help? Good luck to you.

Response From Hammer Time

We have a new tech that's pretty good with transmissions. He may see it quicker if you move it to the trans category Loren.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Duh! Why didn't I think of that! Done.

Response From saint056

OK. This is what I found out. The tranny has gunk and build-up sediment in the pan. About 1/8 inch silver shaving build-up on the magnet. So I'm now inclined to thing the converter was starving for fluid due to a clogged filter or something in the tranny itself. Could this be causing the rattle? Now, with this happening, should I just clean it all out and replace with new fluid, or just get it rebuilt. I think it is too complicated for me to do myself. I only know how to rebuild engines, and the basics at that. Not too much to an engine, but a tranny.... whoa! And if a rebuild is in order, what is a fair cost for a rebuild if I brought it into a shop? What do you guys say? Thanks for all the help thus far!

Response From superbob

I worked at buick gmc last 8 years and have repaired many of these transmissions! 4.2 engine then the trans is easy to take out. 5.3 v-8 AWD model and you will hate the front exhaust pipe. The job goes from easy to crazy with the v-8 motor. The filter gets clogged and then won't move. Probably gear failure, but bottom line is the tans must come out. Factory reman is best if you can afford it. Anyone can install it and Obama will warranty it at any gm dealer that is honest or still in business. Good luck
Bob

Response From saint056

Thanks Bob. I actually found one in a junk yard for 350.00 with about 32,000 miles on it and it took 2 days do do it on my back. If I would have just removed the transfer case FIRST, I could have easily done it in a day, but removing all the cross members, exhaust, and getting to the top 2 bolts (with the transfer case on - I'm such a dumb-ass!) on the tranny, it was a pain! But your correct, the filter was clogged, starving the torque converter, thus creating the issue. But, there was about 3/16 build-up of silver powder shavings on the magnet in the pan and nasty fluid to boot. The new tranny was the way to go here for such a cheap cost! Thanks for the input. Now if you could just tell me how to fix the speedometer... Thats an expensive one to buy!

I also have a rear end question in the car engines and noises section regarding my rear end differential whining I am currently looking at fixing if you have any input.

Thanks again - Thomas

Response From superbob

good deal! Speedometer work before you did the trans? Rear diff making a constant noise or just on and off the gas? If constant you may just need a bearing. Pull the rear cover and you will see the metal. Not to hard to replace a bearing or two
Bob

Response From saint056

Speedometer did not work before. The rear end is well explained in the Car and engine noises section. It whines up as it accelerates and down as it decelerates.

Response From saint056

thanks though

2003 Buick Century Engine Knocking

Question From kgarrigan on 2003 Buick Century Engine Knocking

My 2003 Buick Century seems to have had something break in the engine. It was without warning, there was a large pop, followed by a loud knocking and grinding and significant loss of power. I had it towed to a shop, who wanted $500 for labor to diagnose and said it could be anything from a valve spring to rocker arms, they didn't know and they ballparked repairs going from $500 to upwards of $3000. I estimate the value of the car at about $3500 if it was running, so I am not willing to invest $3000 in repairs.

I have the fortune of being able to park it for as long as needed, and was wondering if this is something I could do myself. I am fairly skilled mechanically, having done everything from water pumps, alternators, clutches, steering repairs, many electrical, coolant and fuel repairs, to lots of other repairs on all of my vehicles, but have never done ANY work inside the engine. Can I fix this myself? Is it worth my time and money?

Other details: Car running great until breakdown, 135,000 miles, recently replaced intake manifold gasket and catalytic converter. 3.8L V6

Response From Hammer Time

I guess if we knew what was wrong with it we could answer that but you didn't have it diagnosed so, I guess not.

Response From kgarrigan

Sorry, I guess I should clarify that I am asking about being able to find damage on my own as well, for example broken valve springs or rocker arm components. I did pay the shop $100 diagnosis and cylinder compression check which they found nothing to pinpoint the problem, and they wanted an additional $500 for labor to open up the engine/valve covers etc to try to pinpoint the problem. I chose not to spend this additional money because I don't want to burn an additional $500 on a lost cause, if that is what it turns out to be. I understand the lack of information I am giving and that this is a complicated diagnosis/repair that could be one of many things wrong. As I am Completely inexperienced at engine repair, I thought it might be helpful to seek the advice of those more experienced than me before I attempted. If it is something that is relatively simple and may take me a few weeks/months to do on my own and saves me thousands, I will give it a shot. If not, I am prepared to sell/donate the car for parts.

Response From Hammer Time

If they did a complete compression test and found no issues, then you don't have a valve or rocker problem. Doesn't sound like they had a cklue what they were doing.

Response From kgarrigan

That may be true, and a good thing I didn't give them anymore money.

Response From Discretesignals

Did the oil pressure light go on when the bang and loss of power occurred?

Response From kgarrigan

No. No oil pressure light. The oil level is still good, and looks clean, no water. There are no oil leaks in the car. When the sounds started there was no leaking fluids of any kind, and there still isn't. There is no visible symptoms like smoke either. The car will still start and run, but with a constant loud knocking sound. I towed it to my home and It is not being driven because of concern for causing more damage.

Response From nickwarner

Drain the oil into a clean pan and see if there is any metal in it. Bearing material will look like grey goo and silver flakes.

Response From Discretesignals

Can you video the noise and post it up on a video hosting site and then send us the link. Kind of curious to hear what this sounds like.

Response From Discretesignals

Can you post a vid of the engine revving up?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

How recent was the intake job? I'd probably start with looking in thru spark plug holes with a scope made for that to plain see if inside a cylinder is all trashed now. If a chunk of something was eaten or a valve broke off a piece it could have done fatal damage - can't be sure of anything without an inspection on something like that without checking it out in person,

T

Response From kgarrigan

Tom,

Thanks for the advice of trying to inspect the cylinders through the spark plug holes. I will try to do that and see if that helps give me direction as to what might be wrong.

The intake manifold gasket was replaced 9 months ago, by a shop.
