Question From x8jason8x on Re: 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer no power to fuel pump

Sorry for the necrobump, but I'm having a similar issue.

What happened is while driving, I stopped to check my mail, and turned the hazard lights on. The car died when I pushed the switch, and would not start again. It threw p0340 crankshaft sensor circuit error. I replaced the sensor and checked all the harnesses and contacts, no obvious problem, changed a faulty ignition lock cylinder and starter, and now, there is no power to the fuel pump. The circuit powers while cranking, and the pump works with 12v applied. Both relays are getting power, and all fuses are good. I am at my wit's end, and I am simply stumped as to what I should do now. The engine cranks, and as I said the circuit gets power when it's cranking, so I am simply lost. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Response From x8jason8x

Sorry, car is also 2004 Lancer, ES model 2.0 5 speed.

Response From Discretesignals

Is the P0340 code still showing up?

Response From x8jason8x Top Rated Answer

Yes it is still showing up. Accompanying text is as follows:

P0340

Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

Fuel System 1
Open - Loop Drive

Sorry for the delay, a bit hectic around here.

Response From Discretesignals

I don't know if you can do this, but remove the oil cap and look at the camshaft. See if it spins when someone cranks the engine.

There is also TSB on the P0340. It may apply:

No.: TSB-07-11-001

DATE: January, 2007

MODEL: 2002-07 Lancer 2.0L

SUBJECT:
HARD TO START ENGINE DTC P0340 (and P0335)

PURPOSE

The engine may be hard or impossible to start and MFI DTC P0335 and possibly P0340 may be stored due to abnormal wear to the camshaft position sensor support. Oil grooves have been added to the camshaft position sensor support to improve lubrication.
f a customer has a vehicle with the above condition, replace the camshaft position sensor support with the new part listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
2002-07 Lancer 2.0L

PROCEDURE

Replace the camshaft position sensor support as described in Group 11B, GENERATOR AND IGNITION SYSTEM REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION, of the appropriate service manual.

IMPORTANT!
Carefully remove all debris from the end of the camshaft position sensor before reinstalling it.

Response From x8jason8x

Camshaft isn't spinning. Can't say if the TSB applies but at this point the best I can do is clean out the support and re-lube the sensor.

Response From Discretesignals

If the camshaft isn't spinning while your cranking the engine, you have a problem with the timing belt.

Response From x8jason8x

Ok, timing belt had stripped teeth. I wasn't aware of the number of sensors in this thing haha. Anyway, I replaced the belt, lined up the timing marks, but I'm still not getting power to the fuel pump. It's cranking, but won't start. Throwing 2 of each OBD p0335 and p0340. Is it possible I have the cam out 180 degrees? Ugh haha this is driving me nuts.

Response From x8jason8x

Disregard last post, I had put the wrong sensor in the camshaft sensor slot. Thanks for your help!

SOLVED.

Response From Discretesignals

Were you able to get the engine started?

Response From x8jason8x

Yes. The wrong sensor came from a guy that ordered it for me, and insisted on putting it in. Turns out he'd ordered a crankshaft sensor. Thankfully, I didn't let him toss the old one, and when I put it in, it fired right up, and is only throwing the cat sensor code now, which I'll replace myself. Thanks for your help!

Response From Discretesignals

Good to read you got your vehicle running again. Your pretty lucky because that engine is labeled as an interference engine. The cam most have stopped spinning in just the right place. Thanks for the follow up. Closed as solved.

Response From x8jason8x

Ah. Will get on that, and update what I find.

Response From x8jason8x

I haven't had the chance to get a code reader again yet, but I can tell you that it wasn't cranking before, it was just spinning and not engaging. I will get a code reader asap.
