bad smell

Question From eyob07 on bad smell

He everyone this is a 2006 jeep liberty 3,4, when the heater is on a burn like smell comes, what could be the source of this kind of smell. and I don't see any kind of smoke. thank you like always.

Response From Hammer Time

It really depends on what it smells like. You could have an engine oil leak dripping onto exhaust so the air intake sucks in an oil burning smell. You could also have an animal that crawled up into the heater and died.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Not sure what to suggest so just questions: Does this happen with heat only request and not with any other? Does it all work properly otherwise? Will it dissipate some with prolonged use?

IDK, If you wish to dig into it check coolant level and for an drips coming from heater case usually onto passenger's side floor if heater core leaking. That near always has a distinct odor. Cabin air filter if equipped replace or check at least.

Could probably pull out blower motor for a view inside or if motor or wires nearby look overheated OR rodent nest debris.

Probably can only look around if everything is working?

AC works but compressor does not kick on

Question From carribejo on AC works but compressor does not kick on

2006, Jeep Liberty, 3.7 - 42,000 miles. The air conditioner is working but after some time on, the air flow diminishes and not getting cold. When opened the hood the pipes around the compressor were iced up.
The compressor is not kicking on
HELP!

Response From Hammer Time

I would advise you to change your user name or the spammers are going to have a field day with you.

Is the blower working properly and you are getting strong air flow out the vents?

Response From carribejo

Yes! Everything mentioned works....

P.s......changed username

Response From Hammer Time

It's not making a lot of sense. Everything you are describing points to a lack of air flow across the evaporator causing it to freeze
the lines. You could also have an internal restriction causing that but that's much less likely.

Response From kev2

I am NOT sure owners manual will tell - is there a cabin/pollen air filter?

a scan for codes- maybe a code won't know till you check, then a set of AC gauges

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Might be my eyesight: You said it works at first, notice frost on lines and coolness plus airflow diminishes. Can also be anything already suggested by HT and KEV but that would also be common for evaporator icing frequently can be caused by low refrigerant charge from a leak.

Common leaks to these were the evaporator which is a job. Continued operation almost certainly will make the fix worse.

A good clue of evap icing is when you shut the vehicle off it would likely make a much larger puddle of water as it melts.

System should shut itself down by itself but most are late. Again all things mentioned checked, restriction, cabin air filter if applicable and I personally would check with a sniffer for refrigerant coming out panel vents. A device that beeps but can be wrong sniffing another something as more than refrigerant can piss those things off.

Most A/C is best left to those who have the equipment to test and do the work.

Off topic but it was 5 below zeroF here last night so it's amusing to discuss A/C for me right now

Response From Hammer Time

I missed the air flow part of his question but I specifically asked him about air flow.

I would say the cycling switch isn't cutting off when it's supposed to.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It probably is a CCOT set up. Who knows if LPCO is accurate or if adjustable was messed with?

Where the heck is it warm enough to need A/C now? Send it this way! Tom

Response From Hammer Time

He's in the Dominican Republic

It is a CCOT system so the cycling switch has to be bad.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

High on the list. Pressures should show it, T

Response From Discretesignals

Or someone jumped the switch or ac relay to get the compressor to work because there is another issue that someone couldn't figure out.
