No heat in Taurus - not thermostat or heater core

Question From Guest on No heat in Taurus - not thermostat or heater core

Hi! I have a 2002 Ford Taurus SES 86000 mi engine size: 2.0

I have not had heat for over a year. Thermostat has been replaced, vents are working, AC is working, blows good air out of all vents - only blows cold air, Felt heater hoses - very hot, so I don't think it's the heater core. We replaced anti-freeze. Does anyone think it could be a blend door? If so, is this hard to replace by myself and how do I do it? Thank you so much for any thoughts!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

It would be rare (to me) but yes there's a blend door that controls air thru core for level of heat. I don't have diagrams but you may see this looking under dash, thru glove box where an actuator actually turns the door. You may be able to turn it by hand and start figuring on if the motor is bad, control request is wrong or door isn't able to move from there.

Do you hear something trying or any clues from control head?

T

Response From Guest

Thanks for your reply! No, I don't hear anything at all - seems like everything is operating fine. Do you think I should be focusing on the blend door or the white box motor or do you think my problem could be related to something totally different from the blend door from the information I have told you? Thanks again!!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You said it's been over a year with this so I dismissed the more common problem of being low on coolant. That still needs to be known full, in the system not just at the reservoir.

Some set ups control the amount of hot coolant flow with a "heater control" valve in line of input heater hose and I didn't see one listed for this car so that leans towards the blend door as you thought.

Be nice if you could find the actuator easily to see if it moves, is disconnected or what but some are burried deep. It could be the control head just isn't telling it to do anything but blow cold so that's in the cards too.

With heater hoses hot on both sides it suggests core isn't totally plugged and if that's all it was it would have one cold hose while operating heater.

Before this leads to "open dash" surgery it would be nice to nail it down. I'd be digging in to look for the actuator and just see it as they can strip and not move the door. Door itself can break too but hard to believe you wouldn't be complaining about A/C not right or other problems with air flow controls too.

Had anything been done that could have bumped or left something disconnected - a radio fixed or replaced - anything for clues?

I'll wait for your observations again and look to see what I can find on the actuator motor itself for this as they can just quit and no doubt the "home" position is for no heated air if broken,

Thx again for your time Tom! The only thing I can pinpoint is I had a mechanic replace the cabin air filter and it seems like this is when the no heat problem started. Do you know if it is major surgery to fix the actuator by myself? Is it difficult to find?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

BINGO! Get right back to that area and see what happened. If that can be installed such that a duct right near it can't move or a wire or anything strange then that explains it,

Response From Guest

Mr. Greemleaf, not sure if the person problem was solved but am looking at the same problem and was woundering did the solution you gave him work??

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I dunno?? If folks don't come back with the results it remains a mystery. In that they aren't back it must have been found with changing cabin air filter and something was out of place??

Strange burning smell coming from a/c vents

Question From ralberson on Strange burning smell coming from a/c vents

I have a 2004 Ford Taurus (V6 24 OHV) that is emitting a strange burning rubber type of smell through my a/c vents and I don't know what to do. It does it periodically and usually after the car has heated up or has been running for a while. I was thinking that it could be a hose or electrical problem but I am not sure where to start. Any suggestions or ideas of what the problem is would be greatly appreciated.

Response From Hammer Time

I'd check for engine oil leaks dripping onto the exhaust.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Tough one: ?? Check cabin air filter if equipped. Evidence of rodent damage or shells of something seen under the hood?

IDK - You may have to take blower motor and cage out to see what the heck it is,

Question From beam44 on A/C

1993 Ford Escort My A/C in my car blows cold air but my problem is the air doesn't blow hard enough out the vents. Is there something I could do to make air blow harder out the vents? 😡 THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE ANYONE CAN GIVE!!

Response From Hammer Time

Do you have or have you ever had a pet that rides in the car?

Response From Discretesignals

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

beam44: Sorry about that it was just a full moon and something is in the air still.

The idea is could core of A/C or ducts be clogged with something I think was the jist of the question. Yes - on the list along with anything that could "dirty" the air flow thru. Evaporators are like a small radiator and do get damp and could attract and stick junk to them from hair to a built up of pollen or who knows?

Never sure but would probably be a lot of work to look right at it. Probably taking blower motor and it's blower cage out could be informative or even show leaves, or something blocking flow. I doubt this car has a cabin air filter which otherwise would be first on the list,

T

Response From Hammer Time

The blower wheel could also be clogged with leaves and suck.
