Peugeot 5008 whining/grinding noise

Have noticed my Peugeot 5008 2.0 HDi is making a sort of whining, possibly grinding sound coming from the front; not apprent when car is stationary, particularly noticible on the motorway. Had new front brakes fitted in June and first recall noticing this shortly afterwards. Might it be incorrectly fitted brakes or am I looking at it more likely being summit like bearings?

Why aren't you bringing it back to the shop that did the brakes to have them check their work?

Might well do but wasn't convinced if the 2 would be related and I'm not 100% if I had noticed it before or not; my wife drives the car more than do.

You aren't going to accurately diagnose your problem until somebody physically inspects the car.

OK - I have a 1.1 Peugeot 106 Zest 2. I've recently had clutch kit done(sat), brakes on front and back tightened, plates above front springs replaced. I know car still has a problem with CV Joint on left.

It has an unidentifiable squeak that I can't seem to get the mechanics to hear. This is what it does. OK - sounds like a vibration type squeak, only starts when car has been running for over 20 mins or so and thats moving not traffic. Car makes no noise when accelerator is pressed on, second I take foot off it starts. Gets worse if clutch is pressed, stops second car stops. It does seem to quieten for a few moments if wheels are turned. Have checked wheels are not hot when I stop (someone mentioned bearings/brakes). I have run out of ideas to try to solve this and work out what it is.

I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions as to other things to try.

You just had a clutch replaced a few days ago? Something with that part of the work done probably didn't go properly?

IDK what you mean by brakes being tightened. You can adjust drum style brakes usually those are found on rear wheels only. If you hear this then back when it will definitely do it and let the tech/mechanic test it out - go with the tech and point out when and what makes it happen,

Thanks for your reply - I'm going to give garage a call on route home tonight so they can hear the issue - it may be the clutch again just really disappointing as it had just been sorted. I wasn't sure whether the noise had turned in to clutch noise or been overshadowed by clutch noise if that makes sense.

I've had brakes checked a few times. Tech I've had out in the car once but it would not make any noise - seems to need to be doing some miles to get it to do it. Although if its clutch the 400 odd miles I have to do in the next few days will make it break and squeal again I'm sure.

I have new pads and discs for 4 months under a thousand miles whilst using. If the caliper then ceases will the pads fall off?

You mean seizes right? Generally pads won't lose their linings if that happens especially new ones. May have ruined them? If a wheel is sticky or frozen it could be a caliper (do both sides) or the flex hose can fail and lock the pressure to it. To test for that just crack a bleeder on frozen one and if wheel frees right up replace both hoses. IMO - brake things should always be both sides,

Hi all,

Has anyone replaced the rear brake pads on a peugeot 307 SW.

I bought the pads thinking it would be easy but I can't get the piston to go back into the caliper.

I can only assume that there is a none return valve, maybe connected to the hand brake.

Either way I can't get the sods back in to replace the pads

Any help would be appreciated

If the parking brake works through the caliper, the caliper’s piston needs to be rotated in the bore and compressed at the same time to get them to retract.

It's best to bleed it out while retracting as you are not pushing old brake fluid back to the master cylinder. If you do that and don't intend on bleeding the whole system put a clear tube into a clean glass container from the bleeder and keep it submerged or air may get drawn back in.

It's a good time to just replace rotors as most don't have lots of extra metal to turn them,

First off thanks for all your help.

This morning I loaded my tools into the car and set off to work (far easier to do this kind of job on a flat concrete floor with a big equiped workshop at hand).

So.......... yes the pistons must be twisted (clockwise), at thesame time as pressing them and yes once you know how its a piece of piss (excuse my french).

I had intentions of grinding the head of a bolt so that it would fit the piston head but as it turned out I took the easy option and...........

.........twisted the piston with a big pair of adjustable pliers (taking care not to damage the aluminium piston head), and pressed the piston in by turning (by hand), a big bolt I found in a disused factory next door (yes that easy).

Where things went a little wrong was I put a clamp on the brake hose so that I could bleed the old fluide out at thesame time but it would seem that under the rubber they are braided and so I flattened the tube a little. I did put the clamp on at 90° and that seems to of made my round hose into a square one.

However the good news is that they work

Keep an eye on that hose or just replace it. It has been compremised,
