Hyundai Elantra - 30miles/h shake

Question From mist303 on Hyundai Elantra - 30miles/h shake

Hello everyone,
This time, I'm posting for a friend of mine who went to the dealer about this problem but they didn't know what to do.

He has a Hyundai Elantra 2014 with 20K miles. It has a 1.6 liter engine and a CVT trans.

The car is generally fine on most speeds except around 50Km/h or 30miles/h. At that speed, the whole car shakes (more of a wiggle really). You can't feel it as much in the steering wheel as the body of the car. It's really noticeable there.

As I said, the Hyundai dealer had no idea what was causing this.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Response From Hammer Time

Sounds like it might be a separated tire to me.

Response From mist303

Thanks for the replies. I will tell my friend to ask for the seperated tires to be checked.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Dealer found nothing wasn't checking too hard if you feel this in the wheel. Yes check for tread separation and wheels themselves. I suggested rotating as if felt in the wheel it might still shake but differently - perhaps not in the wheel if they are moved.

If low miles/kms tire wear might be hard to see at first as the clue. Tough on some as you don't see much. Check for recalls of the brand of tire on it too. Some car makers will notify listed owners of a general recall for the parts used if enough of them are found to do something and some shut up and wait? There's a mix as car maker didn't make the tires so can be disinterested,

T

Response From mist303

Told my friend about the seperated tire. He said the tires were replaced due to flaws in the first week he got the car. He'll contact the dealer tomorrow as today is a holiday.
Thanks again.

Response From mist303

Apologies for the delay. He got back to me saying that he took it back and they used a new machine that checked the weight, balance, and angles of the tires and put them in order to be placed back. But the machine didn't find anything. And during the test drive, the problem didn't appear so well.
Here's a picture he took of the machine's overall report:

Also, he told them about the separated tire but they didn't understand. Any ideas?

Response From Hammer Time

If they put these tires on a Road Force balancer, you can pretty much rule out a tire problem. It's time to take a harder look at the car.

Response From mist303

Alright. He lives an hour's drive from the service center. So, he'll be taking the car in for the next servicing in a while and have them recheck it. Could be the rotor or drum as Tom Greenleaf suggested.

One last thing, would it be safe for him to drive around until the next servicing?

Response From Hammer Time

How can we tell you if it's safe if nobody knows what is wrong with it?

No, I wouldn't be driving it.

Response From mist303

Thought the possible causes might have been minor. I'll tell him to check it back in asap.

Thank you all for your help.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Safety? Anything that moves isn't safe so can't know on this. If it got worse quickly then I would be more worried.

Brake rotors are small and light as they go compared to monster vehicles so less likely the issue. Nothing even in my use or possession could check real balance of them but they show either weights or metal removed on some if they were checked and done and then you can't know it's perfect or way the heck off.

Some whole wheels, just hoisted with no brake drag might if spun by hand stop and go backwards as a clue. That problem is not common on smaller vehicles and sure was on land yachts and some trucks. A drive wheel is less likely to show up with any testing I know of. Sorry for the long drive to check this and bet is still a flaw not noticed yet so ask that a tech drive it and know this isn't a joke if need be,

T

Response From mist303

They've test drove it twice and the vibration wasn't apparent. The dealer wasn't even convinced there was a problem to begin with.

When I rode along with my friend, it was very noticeable. The car wiggled left and right at the time.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

?? Dealer was in it TWICE and nothing and history of tires already being replaced. IDK. Hard to compete with being there. Perhaps if this is that elusive try a tire specialty place which wouldn't be on warranty for an opinion? If another place is willing to write up what is wrong if found decide what to do thru Hyundai with the story.

Strange story and history and tires replaced already right away and now again and dealer finds nothing. If found that somehow this is driver error or from bent rim or something caused by owner with evidence if possible it would no longer be a dealer or warranty issue IMO. Tough call from here,

T

Response From mist303

Hey all,
Just in case you are interested, I took his car for two days to see if I can find anything and I did. Turns out, the car vibrates at almost all speeds when I let go of the gas pedal and the speed drops 10km/h. It's most noticeable at 60-50 km/h, but it exists at all speeds too.
He's gonna take it back in soon.

Thanks all.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Tires are NOT one piece of rubber. They are vulcanized strips to stick together plus hold steel (most) in place and some don't. Whole lines of same tires fail sometimes with manufacturing issues.

They can also be traumatized (not usually all at once if so) by curbs, overloads, overheat and pressure or under pressure and more.

They may LOOK fine and even with close inspection while mounted. If enough has been ruled out it still needs to be investigated up to taking them off wheels for more careful inspection.

At some # of miles the tread should show some odd wear perhaps just soft spot or by eye on vehicle or hand spinning on balancer machine you see the flaw that it's not true or perhaps the wheel isn't?

Some wheels go bad (not so much in last few decades but who knows?) if over torqued lug nuts or wrong sequence of tightening them.

Balance and alignment are checking wheel rims and tires. A square would balance spinning on a machine so guess how it would drive when on a vehicle.

Tire, wheel tread separation still not ruled out IMO. In that it happened before it could also be a flaw in a rotor or drum (if used) that are not balanced on the vehicle much anymore or balanced again once new. Could take some careful checking to find this.

Second round you said with this? Exact same tires or you don't know? Retired (no pun) but said tires are not made by the vehicle maker that I know of and warranty covered by maker of tires. Dealers lose motivation and ones I knew didn't pay for the same issue twice but the dealer then owned it unless a recall of item(s) is the issue. This new may not have a TSB that it happens to many yet? Ask if any are out there yet with same complaint and the fix made known,

T

Response From mist303

According to him, the tires are new. The ones that came with the car had a few problems so they were changed. They told him no one else complained about this problem.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Rotate tires and see if problem changes or moves to new location,

T

Response From mist303

Rotate tires and see if problem changes or moves to new location,

T

The whole body shakes. Not a single specific area.
