  • Posi Quiet brake pads are manufactured using the same positive molding process utilized by Original Equipment suppliers. Positive molding uses extreme pressure to compress the friction material and bond it to the backing plate. This process assures consistent friction material density throughout the pad; resulting in even wear and performance characteristics throughout the life of the brake pad. The number one cause for customer returns are noise and vibration. Centric Parts has recognized these issues and is constantly improving its products to eliminate these issues. Posi Quiet brake friction features either precision cut or shaved backing plates and mechanically attached shims; these small details ensure proper fitment in the caliper and virtually eliminate noise associated with pad vibration. In addition to these features Centric Parts has added a scorching process to all of its Posi Quiet brake pads. This additional process forces any impurities out of the friction material and pre-burnishes the pads to greatly accelerate the break-in process. All Posi Quiet brake pad friction formulations are asbestos free and are available in three application specific compounds complete with all necessary hardware for installation where applicable.

Replacing rear brake pads, but the caliper will not compress!!! Is there a trick to this? Does the bolt on the bottom need to come off???

Response From way2old Top Rated Answer

I believe the piston screws in on these. Auto parts houses sell a generic tool that will work.

Question From Guest on 2004 Pontiac Aztec Brake repair

My friend has a Pontiac Aztec and wanted me to hwlp him change brake pads on front. I checked repair guides at Autozone. com but they don't have any information. Could someone tell me the proper procedure so I can do this job correctly? Thanks very much

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

It’s good that you’re asking this before you attempt this repair; it’s the smart thing to do.
Information providers like Mitchell On-Demand or All-Data will sell you time on their web sites.
I know a lot of people think that they can stuff a set of brake pads on their vehicle; which is likely true but to do it properly is another story.
Small things that are actually very important things; cleanliness for one, is the last people are thinking of, as they’re taking off the old blackened, worn out rusty pads.
If you contaminate the new pads with this soot & rust; you’ve just shortened the pads life expectancy and there efficiency.
Calipers, caliper perches, guide pins and rubber bushings need to be cleaned and lubricated with the proper materials. Using plain old high temperature grease or petroleum solvents on the rubbers and you may as well have used superglue. Brake rubber will swell and stick the things they’re supposed to guide freely; if the wrong lube/cleaners are used.
So thank you for trying to do your homework before doing this for your friend; you never know it might be them coming at me in my rearview mirror.

1998 pontiac sunfire Loud " thumping " noise when pressing brakes

Question From MynamesMike on 1998 pontiac sunfire Loud " thumping " noise when pressing brakes

I have a 98 pontiac sunfire. I replaced the front rotors/brake pads about 5 months ago because Everytime I would hit the brakes to slow down, i would get a loud thump sound and a " shaking" in the car while stopping. Once i got the rotors/pads off, they were bad, so i replaced them. The thumping / shaking stopped and I had smooth stopping.

It ran smooth for about 3 months. But now the thumping is back everytime I slow down. I had someone check out the front pads/rotors again, their all fine, still new. We also looked at the BACK drums/pads. They are also fine.

No one seems to know what else could be causing this thumping and shaking that occurs while I'm stopping.

appreciate any advice/help!

Thanks!

Response From chickenhouse

When the thumping occurs, do you feel any pulsating in the brake peddle when stopping? That would indicate the new rotors are our of parallelism and quite possibly need turned to make them true.

Response From MynamesMike

THanks for the response Chickenhouse! Yeah i can feel a little bumping in the pedal. Could they become " out of parallelism" over time? Because they ran smooth for a few months after being new, then the thumping started.

Also, can the drums in the back also be out of parallelism? I don't know much about fixing cars...at all, but sometimes It feels as if the thumping is coming from the back, other times it feels like its coming from the front. Although the drums look fine.

Someone else also told me the rotors may be " warped" Is that the same thing as out of parallelis? I figured I would try to replace them, and if that doesn't work do you think it would be a good idea to replace the drums even though they look fine?

Thanks again!

Response From chickenhouse

Yes, they can still "look"new but the true reading comes from the brake lathe. I would take the rotors off and have them turned. Rear drums also. That eliminates any question of them being "true".

Response From Hammer Time

We use a dial indicator to measure that.

Response From chickenhouse

Yeah, I've heard of them! Maybe Mike has one in his trunk.

Response From Hammer Time

Is that sarcasm CH?

Response From chickenhouse

Nah, I'm not good at sarcasim. We all know what tools are required and I'm just tryin to help him get rid of the shaking. If he takes it to a shop, they should use an indicator to check the run out of each rotor- of course. But, if he's like most that visit this site, and want to do his own repairs, or HAS to do his own repairs, he wounaturally take both rotors and drums off and have them checked and resurfaced, thereby eliminating any question of those being the problem. That's all.

Response From Sidom

My quick check method for drums is take it out on the road, keep the E brk handle pulled so the brk wont stay engaged & use the E brk to slowly stop the vehicle.

If it stops smooth the drums are good, if you can feel a pulsation, they are warped as well...... I usually keep it under 30, any faster & the rear end locks up.....

Response From Hammer Time

My experience has been that even if the drums are warped, it usually translates to more noise than feel. The drum just flexes and never pumps back on the pedal. It just moved the shoes back and forth causing a clicking. Rear rotors will do it but the parking brake is not always associated with the pads.

Response From Sidom Top Rated Answer

Ya, that little trick is about worthless on rear rotors unless it's rear actuated calipers that use the pads for the E brk...

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Can only guess without being there. Here and I hope illegal to sell them there was a line of "economy" rotors and drums that near all failed. Bad recycled metal. Some new out of the box showed flaws.

Box should state they were machined when new. Big cost difference for that and naturally people don't want to overspend but there are HUGE quality differences in brake parts.

IMO - you shouldn't have to machine a new rotor or drum and if you do the store owes you a new set and the pads if that's the issue,

Response From MynamesMike

appreciate all the help guys.

Unfortunately I can't afford to be able to bring anything in to have it checked. My plan is to buy a set of front rotors, replace them. ( im starting with the front because It feels like its coming from the front drivers side) If that doesn't stop the bumping, I'm going to buy a set of drums and then replace those.

Is this a good idea?

It seems like it would be more expensive to go in and have my rotors/drums worked on anyways, but im not positive.

Oh and I already checked, the store refuses to replace them for me because its been about 6 months.

Response From Hammer Time

I would concentrate on the front. Drum brakes rarely cause this. I would be sure to replace the pads with the rotors or you will have problems there too.

Response From MynamesMike

Even if the pads are brand new as well ( about 5 months) ?

Response From Hammer Time

That doesn't matter. They have worn to the uneven surface of the old rotors and have to go now.

Response From MynamesMike

Ok I see.

I don't know much, thats why I ask.

Thanks!

Response From Tom Greenleaf

For best results - YES,

2000 Pontiac Sunfire Rear brakes are making loud grinding noise.

Question From texisman on 2000 Pontiac Sunfire Rear brakes are making loud grinding noise.

Car details: 2000 Pontiac Sunfire - 4 cyl - Front Wheel Drive - Automatic - 200,000+ miles

Hi, whenever I apply the breaks the rear ones are making a very loud grinding noise. What parts will I need to replace, how do I replace them and what tools will I need for the job?

I've replaced front brake pads on vehicles many times but I have never had to deal with rear breaks. Is it as simple as replacing front break pads or is there more involved?

Thanks!

Response From nickwarner

you didn't mention whether these are disc or drum. If disc, you change them like the fronts. some require the use of an inexpensive tool called a piston cube to rotate the piston back into the bore. Some don't do this, so you have to look at it. You would need new rotors too since they are ground into dust. If drum, you need shoes, drums and a hardware kit. It contains the springs and such that hold everything in place. Don't reuse the old ones, its inviting trouble. Not a bad idea to change the wheel cylinders too, as they aren't expensive and if they go out later you'll have to replace the shoes all over again from fluid getting on them. If you log on to autozone.com they have free online repair info that can help you through this job. If you've never done drum brakes before its not a bad idea to take a photo of where all the springs go when you pull the drums off. You can look at the other side for guidance, but bear in mind it will be reversed.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

It's quite a bit more involved and sometimes requires some special tools. UIf you attempt it, make sure you only do one side at a time so you can see how it goes back together. Your going to have to inspect it to know what parts you need. You likely need drums and the wheel cylinders have to be checked for moisture under the dust covers.
