  • Posi Quiet brake pads are manufactured using the same positive molding process utilized by Original Equipment suppliers. Positive molding uses extreme pressure to compress the friction material and bond it to the backing plate. This process assures consistent friction material density throughout the pad, resulting in even wear and performance characteristics throughout the life of the brake pad. The number one cause for customer returns are noise and vibration. Centric Parts has recognized these issues and is constantly improving its products to eliminate these issues. Posi Quiet brake friction features either precision cut or shaved backing plates and mechanically attached shims; these small details ensure proper fitment in the caliper and virtually eliminate noise associated with pad vibration. In addition to these features Centric Parts has added a scorching process to all of its Posi Quiet brake pads. This additional process forces any impurities out of the friction material and pre-burnishes the pads to greatly accelerate the break-in process. All Posi Quiet brake pad friction formulations are asbestos free and are available in three application specific compounds complete with all necessary hardware for installation where applicable.

1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass with seized rear brake piston

Question From Neti on 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass with seized rear brake piston

Hello. I have an Oldsmobile cutlass 1995 with a seized piston in the rear passenger side brake. If you push the wheel while it's off the ground , the wheel is incredibly hard to push on some spots in the revolution(the wheel will not rotate freely).

This is reflected as when I brake hard , the peddle begins to vibrate , and you hear a sound as if the pads are not uniformly worn , a sort of "whooshing" sound. Braking power is also not very good.

I assume the front wheel brake pads are worn(will check very soon) , but the right rear brake has something definitely off about it.Brake fluid is fine.

Any suggestions on how to unbind the seized piston?

Response From Hammer Time

You don't "unseize" a frozen caliper, you replace both calipers but you are a bit premature assuming the caliper is actually the problem. Could be the slides frozen or a bad flex hose.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

As HT said fix all that's wrong in pairs. If rear discs the parking cables can stick, slide pins, or doubt the type but some use a mini drum brake inside rotor out of sight and those get so full of junk you can need to clean them out now and then.

Anyway the rear brakes are done in this it all must be right, calipers, hoses, hardware, parking brake cables drums and rotors as the heat has probably wrecked the stuck one already. I'm not or no longer a fan of machining them as they are just off spec for new parts and thinner so warp much quicker than new ones frequently not that much more than machining them. Just know that cutting any corners is first less safe and can easily put you back to needing the whole job again too,

"Clicking noise", Right rear wheel.

Question From revolver693 on "Clicking noise", Right rear wheel.

Hi, I have a 1991 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme sedan with a 3.1 liter V-6 with approx. 77000 miles. I just recently noticed a "clicking noise" coming from the right rear wheel.
When I apply the break pedal the noise stops. In addition I discovered that the vehicle has plastic "anti-theft" inserts located on top of the lug nut's. As this is a recently purchased Car I had no idea that this car was equiped with these until I tried to remove the wheel and tire. I don't have the "Wrench" to remove them to get to the lug nut's. Does anyone know of a way to remove them without hunting down a "Special Wrench" Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Response From Hammer Time

Are your rear brakes drum or disc type?

The locks you refer to, are they locking a hubcap on or do you mean locking lug nuts on an aluminum wheel?

Response From revolver693

Yes, they are four wheel disk brakes and it appears that the locks are for the "Hub" Caps

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

There are a few different types of hubcap locks but you can usually get most of them off using needle nose pliers and a screwdriver.

The clicking your hearing is probably the brake pads rattling and moving back and forth in their holders, usually because the rotor is rusted or distorted.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sorry to butt in on this - here's the pic shown earlier........

This looks like alloy wheels to me not hub caps! What may be the issue is one special lug nut per wheel for anti theft which can be replaced with a regular lug nut. Get new pattern anti theft lug nuts and the socket if you see the need but not being able to inspect this problem is the major problem at the moment,

T

PS: on edit - they may be hubcaps but I can only tell by what I see??

Response From Hammer Time

They are hubcaps but they are real lug nuts passing through. Has to be locking lugs.

Tapping in Front Left Wheel

Question From Constellation2 on Tapping in Front Left Wheel

1986
Oldsmobile
Cutlass Ciera
2.8 V-6
106,000 miles
Can hear when driver's window is down, on slower streets in-town. Tapping increases, but sound recedes, with speed. The tires were rotated 5000 miles ago, there was a slight pull to the right afterwards, which we compensated for by just steering slightly left. First noticed the tap two months, or about 250 miles ago. The tires were old, so tire replaced with new, balanced tire (all four tires replaced and balanced). Tapping still there, though not as noticeable. 106,000 miles on car. No accidents. Garaged. One owner. Driven avg < 3000 mi/year.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

A few thing likely to check. A brake pad might have lost any anti-rattle parts and make noise at even slight variations in trueness of the rotor. That would shut up if you were braking or just slightly dragged the brakes while it does it.

'86? Wheel trim or hubcaps? Either can make noise. If no loose parts try removing cosmetic trim and see if it goes away. Assorted fixes depending on what you find.

Car pulls and less now with new tires - no surprise as tires now are more flexible with new tread. It needs an alignment and any parts not up to par now before the new ones get a wear pattern.
**************
Suggestions for low use vehicles: Use them if they sit too long brakes may not wear but need re-lubing. Old and low use still check tire pressure including spare. Lube up all locks, hinges and latches all over this thing.

If all short trips all the time take it on a run on purpose at some speeds and miles all at once as possible. Weak things may show up but better to know.
Change oil also based on time not just miles. This does have (should) some grease fittings - grease them with now more attention to time same as oil. Twice a year checks at least and grease with oil changes.

Back to the noise. Seriously - brakes most likely but may need to take apart to see the flaws not just a glance with wheels off,

Response From Constellation2

Thank you, Tom!
Will look into these.
Is it possible it could be wheel bearings?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Wheel bearings much less likely. Life of those unknown to me but a common reason to harm them is submerged in water for any reason.

The super common feel/noise with those is a growl that changes with driving along steering left and right shifting the load the noise will almost always get worse or even go away with that test. Any free play in sealed bearing is wrong. By that point you think you were driving on a flat and on the rim and about to lose that wheel.

No service for front bearing on this TMK. Brakes normally not either but parts are greased that usually last the life of them by wear but take a hit by time too, grease lost to moisture, heat and time they can not retract as well or worse at all just stuck from lack of lube and even light rust. Brakes also seriously do not like being dunked under water. If that is in the history I suggest saying so and have all suspect parts checked and relubed as seen fit. By the time water if that at all is over top of a wheel you are about beyond endless problems and surprises.
The answer for this exact "tapping noise" is above. If a loose brake pad it would not do that when brakes are applied while moving along,

Response From Constellation2

Thanks Tom. Will try brakes next time I'm out to see if it disappears.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

You got it, that will tell almost for sure. Just did one with NOTHING really wrong (doesn't matter what make) on a car that sat indoors for too long IMO and just needed relubing good brakes otherwise,
