1997 Nissan Altima Brake Light Switch

Question From MrDirtyVegas on 1997 Nissan Altima Brake Light Switch

So the spring in the brake light switch needs to be replaced however i cannot seem to be able to fit up in there and get it out. it seems nearly impossible. i checked a haynes repair manual and ofcoarse it gives no good information other than to replace it you must take it out.

the steering column is in the way of getting a good grip on anything. if theres a way to do it without taking that off ill do it myself. if not ill pay someone to do it.

any tips or tricks to getting that out without taking out the steering column or should i just take it to a shop.

Response From re-tired

Are you sure the sw is bad ? Are the brake lights staying on ? there is a small rubber button that pushes the sw plunger in . it falls out and the sw will not turn off.

Response From MrDirtyVegas

yea im sure its the switch.

Response From re-tired Top Rated Answer

OK ,if memory is right . you can remove cotter pin and pull the small rod out of the linkage. This will allow pedal to move back and forth for a little more working room.

Response From MrDirtyVegas

ill give that a shot. thanks

2005 Hyundai Elantra GT - Brake light switch?

Question From SkyCrystal on 2005 Hyundai Elantra GT - Brake light switch?

I have a 2005 Elantra hatchback and some time last week the brake lights decided to stop shutting off with the car. We decided to hold off on taking it in since this month is a little tight and have just been unhooking the battery with every trip. I know little/nothing about car repair and I'm afraid I won't be able to afford it from a shop. When taking in a friend's car, I asked the Meineke guy and he said it was probably the brake light switch and he'd have to run a diagnostic ($$$) and blah blah blah ($$$$$). Gah... how long can I keep doing this unhooking routine... will it do any sort of damage or can I hold off for a few more weeks? How difficult is it to repair a brake light switch? How expensive would it be to have it done? Is there a reliable freelance mechanic site that I could commission a hobbyist to take a look (like craiglist? Is that sketchy?)? Any advice?

I'm so unprepared for this kind of thing, just freshly out on my own in a new state. Any help would be appreciated!

Response From Hammer Time

I doubt the switch itself is the problem. Most likely the rubber bumper that it lands against has fallen off.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Yes! HT - I don't know which model(s) were known for just that. OP - needs to plain see what's going on first IMO. Some of these if a pedal is pulled UP by hand or foot for some odd reason the adjustment can be lost or part not line up to do it's thing. If you can't see it at all things have to be removed should be easy at risk of probably plastic push buttons that don't work twice well.

Try - it may not be difficult at all,

SUMMARY:
Hyundai is recalling 3,011 model year 2005-2007 Elantra, Tucson, Sonata, Azera and Accent vehicles. A defective stop lamp switch may also affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature so the transmission would not be able to be shift out of the "PARK" position. It may also cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed.

CONSEQUENCE:
Any of these malfunctions could lead to a crash.

Thank you so much! This is so helpful

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Near all are a switch that is above pedal on metal to body to make a connection and disconnect the connection. First diagnosis you should be able to do. Look up metal of brake pedal for a wired switch that a plunger is touching or pushing in when not touching brake pedal and extends out when pedal is pushed - simple look could tell.

Many adjustable. Matters if a switch if this has cruise control or not and either looks similar to this...........

To the left is the button when OUT lights on, pushed in by hand even light should shut off. Shouldn't take any tools for a look to see it at least,

98 Intrigue Shifting Problems

Question From Guest on 98 Intrigue Shifting Problems

I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue and can't get it out of park. I turn the car on and I can't push the button in on the shifter to shift out fo park. If anyone knows what to do about this i would really appreciate it.

Response From dave284

I've have seen this problem before in other vehicles. The shifter is made to lock until the brake pedal is pressed, most cases there's a cable or some kind of linkage that goes from the brake pedal to the shifter, its a child saftey set-up. And other cases it could be in the key ignition assembly itself if the shifter is on the coloum. Maybe this might help you some.

Response From Guest

How do i find these cables or linkages that could be connected from my break pedal to the shifter? Or if anyone knows how to take the cover off of the shifter in the 98 Oldsmobile Intrigue please let me know.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Yes dave284. Check if the brake lights work. Many if not most sense the brake light switch to lights and on to whatever electrically controlled locking device. Most are a problem with the brake light switch and not other items involved,

Question From ratrace2 on No brake lights????

Hello, all.

1996 Mercury Grand Marquis GS (v8).

My friend told me today that his brake lights don't work, then they do work, then they don't work, but now they work........HUh???

Does anyone have a diagram of the brake light switch on these Merc's.....................

Hey, Hammer-time? Any chance you still got that schematic and picture of the bake light switch that you sent to maginana????

Response From Hammer Time

Disconnect battery ground cable and disconnect wires at switch connector.

  1. Remove hairpin retainer and slide stop light switch, pushrod, nylon washers and bushings away from brake pedal, and remove switch.
  2. Reverse procedure to install.

Response From ratrace2 Top Rated Answer

Thanks much Hammer.

So you think it's the brake light switch????
Sounds like it's sticking to me!!

Response From Hammer Time

I don't know. i can't test it from here. You need to test for power in all the time and out when the brake is applied.
