99 Cougar Alternator Replacement

Showing 4 out of 4 Posts
Question From garageNV on 99 Cougar Alternator Replacement

Has anyone had the " pleasure " of replacing the alternator on 1999 Mercury Cougar with a 2.5L V6 Auto. Any tips on getting to the bolts would be very helpful. I have already removed the right strut and axle shaft just to able to see the alternator. The bolts are threaded in from the back side with no room to get anything on them.

Autozone link doesn't give specifics and that link didn't work. It's just a matter of getting the right tool on the bolts:

Examples of cool wrenches for hard to get to nuts and bolts.........

Those are examples of "ratcheting" box and open end wrenches as mentioned earlier,

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Tools are the game in car repair now. There should be just one bolt on backside. Whatever it takes - a ratcheting box wrench, or even ratcheting open end wrench should do. There are all sorts of "obstruction" wrenches and tools that a plain socket set can't do,

Major Transaxle leak, 1993 Mercury Tracer..Need Help

Question From old_warrior on Major Transaxle leak, 1993 Mercury Tracer..Need Help

I have what I hope is not a major problem with the Transaxle for my 1993 Mercury Tracer Station Wagon (1.9L engine). It is leaking Tranny fluid big time. My wife works only 3 miles from home and when she arrives at work just parks it. When she gets out of work she says it looks like about a quart has leaked out on to the pavement. After she returned home last night I put a bowl underneath where the fluid was dripping and this morning I could see that easily half a quart of fluid had leaked out over night. The fluid is not discolored, it looks like it just came out of the original container. The tranny shifts fine, no problems at all there, no slipping either and funny no noises. Can anyone give me an idea where or in what locations the fluid can be leaking from? I have to add at least a quart of ATF a day and it is only getting worse. I am disabled and on a fixed income and cannot afford to bring it to a service garage (We all know service garages won't take payments). I am hoping it is a seal or gasket that I can replace myself. Please, does anyone have ideas or suggestions as to where I look to find the leak? Thank you.

Response From steve01832 Top Rated Answer

I have seen a common problem with the axle shaft seals letting go. They are the seals right at where the cv shafts spline into the trans. Also, check that the axle shafts are fully seated in the trans. If they pop out of the locked position, the seal will leak. This is just a common problem I've seen in the past, it may or may not apply to your vehicle.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

This is most likely a Mazda product sold by Ford.

Try drying up-wiping up all the areas from the underside with old rags or paper towels and look for the first place for this to start leaking. Could be several things but keep the fluid full and have spare fluid on hand and any funnel needed.

Without knowing where this is from I don't think any of us can venture a guess, T

Metallic rubbing sound from '97 Mercury Sable

Question From Hoorah on Metallic rubbing sound from '97 Mercury Sable

I just bought a '97 Mercury Sable. The car had been in a minor accident which had banged up the passenger side front quarter panel. What I'm assuming is that reason, they replaced the brakes. Basically, the noise only occurs while the car is in drive and moving. It sounds like a constant metal on metal rubbing. Not necessarily to the point of grinding. Could this be the brakes touching something while the wheels are in motion? How bad of a problem is this, if a problem at all? How do I go about fixing it?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

There is no standard way a car gets damaged in an accident. If this is now your responsibility take a look at the brake parts and see in the general area what might be bent or touching where it shouldn't. Brake parts, axle shaft and a bearing in hub all move and can make noise,

Question From Guest on alternator removal:mystique

95 mercury mystique, 2.5L, A/C 116,000miles.
who in their right mind would put an alternator on the bottom of an engine? Can someone please tell me how to solve this riddle of the ages. I can't even fit my hand thru the small gaps provide by the exhaust pipe and stuff.

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Hey, these engineers get paid big bucks to make it difficult. Let's see how we can make the mechanic's life a nightmare!
1. Remove negative battery cable from battery.
2. Remove serpentine drive belt.
3. Raise vehicle, remove RF wheel.
4. Remove R. tie rod from steering knuckle.
5. Remove exhaust 'Y' pipe.
6. Disconnect wiring from alternator, remove alternator brace.
7. Disconnect lower ball joint from control arm, remove half shaft.
8. Remove alternator mounting bolts.
And then, it will give you just enough room to rotate the alternator and wriggle it out, according to the procedure.
Those engineers must have stayed up late on this one.
If you haven't lit a bomb under the vehicle by this point, put everything back in reverse order using a new circlip on the axle shaft. Tighten the axle nut to 246 ft. lbs. Refil the trans., as you lost some fluid when the axle was pulled. Then, have a couple of beers on us.

"Those engineers must have stayed up late on this one."

Not Quite. They put the car together & disassemble few times. They don't work on cars that are actually on the road for sometime. They don't know or feel the pain mechanics had to endure to remove all these rusted joints.

Mechanic has to heat up bolts & try to exert preassue in unusual position to remove that 10+ yrs old nut&bolt, which never moved since leaving the factory.

Wow i will NEVER complain about my camaro again!! Good luck buddy.
