Question From trikeman on toyota hi ace alternator probs

have 89 Toyota Hi Ace petrol van with 2 ltr engine,

Alternator had, had it fitted new one, yet charging light stays on still,? engine seems to have a bit of pre ignition when turned off also.

Can anyone help]

Trikeman

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Don't know this vehicle for diddle but no matter. Old alternator should have been tested and might have been fine. If this has fusible links to alternator or poor connections (melted) things like that could be the issue. It may (just can't know) have a separate voltage regulator or bad luck with the replacement alternator.

Charging system needs to be fully checked out including belt tension is proper, battery terminals and the cable ends at starter and engine block too all known good or things go crazy,

1987 toyota camry electrical trouble

Question From cwest01 on 1987 toyota camry electrical trouble

OK. I know this sounds odd, but my battery had a dead cell so I replaced that one. After that the alternator went out so I had that replaced and now the only thing that turns on is the head lights. The interior doesn't come on at all.

Anyone know what's going on here?

Response From Hammer Time

Check your fusible links and maxi fuses.

Response From cwest01

where would you find those? I'm still new to fixing cars younger than the 60s and 70s

Response From Hammer Time

In the engiine compartment fuse box.

Response From cwest01

and where is the fuse box located? I can't find any boxes like I see in a 68 duster

Response From Hammer Time

This whole thing may be over your head then and you probably need to bring it to a shop.

Response From cwest01

problem is that I don't have the money to take it to a shop. A do it myself job is all I've got and I have a week to get this done or I get a court martial for inability to appear for duty.

Response From Hammer Time

This could get very involved requiring circuit testing and locating components. You could have ignition switch issues or a problem with one of the relays but if you are having trouble even identifying fuses, you won't have a chance when it goes beyond that.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

Did you unplug the battery when you changed the alternator. Did you short anything?

Check the 80 amp alternator fusible link in the fusible link box. It's probably blown. I have seen alternators go bad and pop that link too. The link box should be near the battery. Follow the battery cable to it.

Response From cwest01

I checked the box and that was the problem. The black fuse ended up broken(literally) and the fuse connections were both melted on. I have to replace the entire box and I'm sure that it's going to be spending a lot of money at the dealer since none of the auto part stores sell them any more

jump start donor car dead

Showing 2 out of 5 Posts | Show 3 Hidden Posts
Question From jackwashere on jump start donor car dead

Used my 1991 Toyota pickup to jump start another car. Made the mistake of turning engine off while connecting up the jumper cables. When I tried to turn on the Toyota pickup the electronics were dead. By dead I mean I turn the key on and nothing, no lights on the dashboard, no radio, no fan, no response when I try to start it. What is the method for fixing this?

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

I personally don't like jumping another vehicle using the jumper cable method unless it is an extreme emergency. With the engine running on the good vehicle it puts a huge load on the alternator, especially when they go cranking on the dead vehicle with a tired starter that is pulling more amps than it is supposed to. I don't recommend using your expensive BMW with a $400 alternator jumping someone else off.

Max amp output on a Toyota PU alternator is around 60 amps. With the alternator running at full tilt trying to charge the dead battery and power your electrical system at the same time, it might just give up and go to alternator heaven. If you have ever replaced an alternator, the manufacture or rebuilder usually puts paper work in the box warning you to be sure the battery is good and fully charged to give the alternator a chance of a long and happy life before firing up the engine. I've watched a new alternator burn up and die because the battery wasn't fully charged, so they aren't BSing.

Better to use a jumper pack if you want to play AAA.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

With you DS - The "Jump Start" game with cables is about over. Yes, some of us still will but knowing more about the situation. Jumper pack or tow the vehicle to find out what is really wrong.

Said many times and warning to others that if a battery is really that dead it might even work but you are also really stressing out charging systems on both.

In general folks, diagnose why. You may know a light was left on - fine, so use a charger not the car's system to get it back up. Risks of burning out stuff exceeds the tow if needed,

T

Response From Sidom

You have some good advise already on what to look for...

I'm just going to add a little footnote for "next time"

DS brings up some real good points about damaging the alternator, which can happen but with the addition of computers on cars today there is also the risk of damaging modules with these spikes in current....

If you have to jump start someone the best way to do it, is have both cars off....Hook the cables up to the vehicles, start your car with the other car off, run yours for a few minutes to boost the dead battery and then shut your car completely off and then try to start the dead car.....If it doesn't start right away....you can turn the dead car off & try boosting the battery a little more by running yours and try again...You can leave the cables hooked up while trying to start the car but it's very important that your car is shut completely off while the dead vehicle is trying to start..

The problem when your car is running is that big spike DS is talking about.....it can travel from the dead car, thru the cables to your car and if your battery can't absorb the whole spike, then it travels into your system and bad things can happen.....

This is the exception....not the rule.....guys will tell you they jump cars hundreds of times with no problem....and I'm sure they are right.....But all it takes is one time to do hundreds of dollars of damage.......Their car is running...yours won't start now and all you get is.....Man thanks a ton for the jump...I hope things work out ok for you.....

Response From Hammer Time

Find out what the reason is first. Start out by testing your battery and all your fuses.

lots of smoke frum alternator

Question From koontzy on lots of smoke frum alternator

I have a92 Toyota that I have put a 88 ford 5.0 in bran new battery and cables using a gm one wire alternator they will work for about a quarter of a mile and than smoke enough to make most diesel owners jealous have checked the cables to make sure that they are tight and were not rubbing any where, their is no draw with key off I have switched the v belt pulley with the ford serpentine pulley on the alternator's don't thank that should mater but maybe.

Response From Discretesignals

From reading your post don't know if the smoke it coming from the alternator or battery cables. How do you have it wired up?

Response From koontzy

after doing more test and research i found out that a stock gm one wire alt puts out 63 amps and that with the electric cooling fans motor running that i am drawing 68 amps i was shocked to find that but now understand the rapid melt downs pull no more than 80 amps with every thing on including the head lights i am going with a 100 amp alt just in case i decide to add any thing else like fog lights this little ops has made me a lot more aware of how borderline most charging systems are

Response From Hammer Time

What exactly is drawing 68 amps?

The average consumption of a cooling fan is about 12 to 18 amps. What else is sucking up that current?

Response From koontzy

it has two cooling fans that draw 25 amps at peak they level out at 18 amps the truck and battery take 50 with headlights on the higher out put alt has seamed to take care of it but put in a 100 amp fuse on the charge wire with a 105 amp alt just in case

Response From Hammer Time

That still sounds like too much output but if you have the problem resolved, great.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

One post on a subject please the other removed.

What are you even thinking of? This makes no sense whatsoever. At least carry a fire extinguisher till this nonsense ends in a destroyed Toyota what ever it is,

T

Response From koontzy

cheaper and way more power than the junk 3.0 it had

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I don't think it's possible for this thread to go anywhere. I'm out,

T

Response From koontzy

the wiring was kept as simple as I could the positive battery cable goes to the starter to the alt and to the fuse box the negative cable goes to the block and fender added one from the fire wall to the block

Response From koontzy

the smoke is coming from the alternator has burned up two in less than 24 hours

Question From schwyzer15 on 2006 toyota corrolla s wont start........sometimes

2006 Toyota corolla died on me the other day after work, had the battery checked it was fully charged. then started checking fuses and moving battery cables, then i say my inside lights come on. was able to drive to Firestone. they said it was an intermittent alternator problem. but how could it be if the battery is fully charged, doesn't the alternator only charge the battery. drove it home. then went out again and tried to start, no crank, no lights no radio, also key less entry was not working. Wiggled battery cables around again gave fuse box a tap then it started working again. What is going on ?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Doesn't seem like you know that battery is charged or charging at all so you'll need to check and do this yourself as I understand this issue it's mostly battery cable connections at battery. Whoever told you an intermittent alternator problem couldn't have checked out much by what happened to get you there. Duh - alt isn't going to work properly with connections so weak it doesn't light up lights so no value in that call yet.

Sport - easy just pulling off cable and things electrical or you will trigger some other problems you don't have now.

Battery: Neg of first on last when done fooling with it. Charge it yourself as if it started with wiggling it, it probably did have enough and no telling about more until you get connections cleaned up or replaced and charge battery.

I'd refrain from tapping on fuse box. I doubt it's the problem unless it was messed up for some other reason IMO this is too new still for that to be the issue.

Are you able to take this on and have a place and some tools? IMO this is easy as things go with minimal tools required,

T

Response From schwyzer15 Top Rated Answer

I do have tools that i can use on this. Is there a way to test the cables. the battery and alternator were both tested at Firestone and they said they were both good 9 out of 10 times then the alternator was bad 1/10. auto-zone tested both and said they were both good. what steps should i take to see what else is wrong?

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just look, cable u-bolts at battery are a mess without you posting a pic. If radio reset it's too late now to use a memory saver to take those off, clean them up with wire brush (baking soda will neutralize any acid there) or sandpaper or buy a tool for top post batteries to clean them. If corrosion has wrecked the band type u-bolt now you need to consider either new cables or high quality splice ends no cheapo ones!

Wipe battery clean - window cleaner is fine or targeted washing if dirty or just take it out. Watch out for battery acid as it will eat holes in fabrics - bad enough if gloves or work clothes a horror if that gets elsewhere. Use paper and throw it out.

If those clean and tighten up well, can't twist on there own if battery is charged or charged enough you are probably all set. Either way use dietetic grease on all metal u-bolt items and hold-down parts so they won't just snap off later. WD-40 fine just doesn't last as long.

OK: Now you can check alternator with engine running now if so. If good and charged engine off should read ~12.5 +/- just a tad and when running may see 13v to ~14.5v and stabilize as battery is fully charged and no sudden extra loads being used. If it just dropped voltage out of the blue something still is wrong to be found.

Test amps can be by default of volt reading! If all is now steady as mentioned give the alternator a load like headlights, RWD and blower on full blast and volts should be in acceptable range still. That alone is highly suggesting alternator is putting out enough for the car and fine IMO. If not, loose belt, bad alternator or yet another connection or problem but betting not on this.

Tools: Credible voltmeter - cheap up to nice DVOM. Charger: If you have time just a trickle automatic shut down charger. Can take all day and most show red, amber then green when done. If it can do that the battery is doing as much as it can and if not it's lacking ability.

Try hard not to break bolts to u-bolt, hold down fasteners as needed use PB (fav) penetrating oil and wait a while and go easy. Small gauge fasteners snap easily and more work than all the rest to make right again.

Clues of a problem still can be blinkers/directional blinkers go slow or headlights go dim or flicker. If ever it resets clock and radio again and a no start or any reaction there's probably more connections to clean up. Note battery cables have the other ends too at engine block and starter motor.

Not expecting much more than this and wont know till that much is done. Not that hard IMO as said with minimal tools if nothing breaks,

T
