Remanufactured DENSO alternators go through a grueling process. Stators and rectifiers are tested to 300 volts, while rotors are submitted to 600 volts, all to ensure reliable performance. Rotor slip rings are buffed to an 8 micron surface finish, with runout limited to 20 microns, minimizing brush wear and abrasion. Bearings are validated to OE standards and loaded with premium OE standard lubricants. New or remanufactured, a DENSO alternator is a quality component. Offered in versions from 40 to 160 amperes and beyond for hundreds of specific vehicle applications, all alternators meet DENSO's rigorous First Time Fit standards. Contemporary cars employ dozens of sophisticated electronic systems from bumper to bumper, placing heavy demands on the charging system. The alternator is no place to cut corners. charging problem 98 dodge ram

Question From skydver on charging problem 98 dodge ram

got a 1998 ram quad cab. 5.9 "Z" code on vin. alternator is charging weakly. when I turn on lights and a/c I get a check gauges light and the charge shows the bottom acceptable line. when I turn off the lights and a/c the light goes out and the gauge climbs about a needle width above the minimum line.I can turn on lights or a/c with no problems, it only happens with both,(compressor running only). alternator has 256000 miles give or take. It was working fine until I changed a heater hose and had to remove it to get to the hose clamp. when I reinstalled it and drove truck I noticed it. The battery was replaced less than 100 miles ago. what is the "box" mounted to the back of the alternator? I had to remove it from the alternator to remove alternator as it was in the wiring harness but it was installed exactly like it came off as it only goes on 1 way. I have checked all connections especially ground connections and they have been found to be tight and corrosion free. Help What did I do wrong, or what is now dead?

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

You need to be careful here and you probably should have some testing done by an experienced auto electric shop because the voltage regulator for this vehicle is built into the PCM and that has to be tested.

Response From skydver

so take it to a dealer or is advanced auto good enough. will it show up on the computer codes? I am not aware of an electrical shop in my area that works on auto electricial systems. options are limited here

Response From Discretesignals

Any reputable auto repair shop that does drive-ability and electrical should be able to figure that one out.

256000 miles on the alternator. Wow. Wonder if there are any brushes left?

Response From skydver

well today I am a VERY happy dodge truck owner. Found the problem.......drum roll.........It was the 140amp fusable link. $3.99 at advance auto. (advance didnt find problem, my company's avionics tech figured it out for me) Had power out of alternator (28vdc) and at battery it showed only the deminishing battery voltage. found blown fuse. all fixed and looking for another 100000 miles.... Thanks for all the help.

Response From Hammer Time

That makes me wonder what blew that fuse in the first place.............

Response From skydver

That makes me wonder what blew that fuse in the first place.............

me too.

Response From Discretesignals

Probably crossed the jumper cables or didn't disconnect the battery when the alternator was removed.

Response From Hammer Time

Must have been some fireworks when it blew.

Response From Discretesignals

Nothing but a 140 amp arc welder couldn't put out...LOL

Response From Hammer Time

Advanced Auto???????????

You gotta be kidding. They are a parts store staffed with part time wanna be mechanics. You need real advanced electrical diagnostics. If you don't have a shop that specializes in electrical diagnostics, then the dealer is your only other alternative

96 Dodge Ram Van Battery wont stay charged

Question From cix333 on 96 Dodge Ram Van Battery wont stay charged

Very new to this site so please be patient.. I have a 96 dodge ram van 5.9 The alternator isnt charging the battery. I have a new battery and had the alternator checked today and it passed fine. Just started doing this over the last week . GEN light came on at first will start when jumped and only run as far as the battery has life in it. Once the battery gets really low, more lights come on the further it drains. Any help or a point in a right direction would be great. I have the alternator out now, and am going to start checking grounds and wires, after reading posts on here it seems as if thats first to do. Thanks Tim M.

Response From Hammer Time Top Rated Answer

Yes, check all your fuses including the large ones. See if you have power at the main terminal of the alternator with the key off. If power is present and the fuses are good. you may have a bad PCM which incorporates the voltage regulator.

1989 dodge ram d100 wont start

Question From Guest on 1989 dodge ram d100 wont start

i have a 1989 dodge ram d100 with a 318 cu.in. v8.
on 3 or 4 seperate occasions i tried to start it and nothing happened. first i got a click, then nothing. and then it would start again a few minutes later. this last time it didnt start again. i checked the starter, fuses, wires, and tried to jump it. nothing works. what else could be wrong?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

At first glance, this sounds like a poor connection problem. Remove the negative battery cable first, then the positive. Inspect and clean both. Reconnect in reverse order. You could have a neutral safety switch (if automatic) or a clutch inhibitor switch problem, but uncommon. While you have the battery cables disconnected from the battery, check the connection at the starter and the ground connection at the engine block.

Response From Guest

i wiggled the ground cable to the engine block and it made a noise, i turned the key and it clicked. then nothing. i removed and cleaned, but still nothing.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

All connection need be right - only as good as the weakest link line a chain,

T

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Remove that bolt, clean both the cable and the block, and reinstall. You've got a poor connection, somewhere.

Response From Guest

i cleaned the post and connection, and now it just clicks, which is better than before. i tried to jump it again, and still only clicks. could it be the alternator?

Response From Loren Champlain Sr

Can you tell where the 'click' is coming from? The starter? Sounds like either poor connections or low battery voltage.
If you are certain that all of your connections are good, and clean, should have the battery charged (if low) and tested. An alternator won't keep it from starting. If the connections were poor, the alternator may not have been able to keep the battery charged. You can try, lightly, tapping on the starter while trying to start. It's possible that we're fighting a bad starter?

Response From Guest

i had the starter tested and it passed, i was going to test the alternator next

Response From kemptw

my 1988 dodge D-100 is doing the same thing. I have been wondering about the ignition switch on it that is above the stearing column below the dash. This has to do with the 3 way starting if the key switch......................

Please advise................................

Response From Loren Champlain Sr Top Rated Answer

Again, the alternator WILL NOT keep the engine from cranking. A low, or sulphated, battery WILL. A battery can be fully charged and still not have the capability of cranking the engine, which requires a lot of amperage. Voltage is important, of course, but amperage is critical. With that said, however, a faulty alternator can overcharge a battery which can kill the battery. A bad battery can kill an alternator by making it over work. If you haven't already done so, have the battery charged fully and load tested. Forget the alternator at this point. We've got to get the engine cranking, first.
I hate to even suggest this, but is it possible that the engine is seized?
