Had alternator replaced maybe 3 months ago (was rebuilt one probably). twice within last 2 weeks, lights start dimming and car just dies and won't start back up. Took back to alternator shop and they say alternator good. Had Advance Auto run diagnostic on battery, starter, & alternator and shows alternator producing only 12.1 volts and they say alternator bad. Had Autozone run test and they say battery good, and alternator good, but voltage regulator is bad. My question is: Is the regulator part of the alternator? If not, when alternator is replaced, do you normally check voltage reg. to make sure it's OK. Should the alternator shop have checked the regulator when I took it BACK to them (after car had died twice on me) to check the alternator? Wordy, I know, but thanks!

Hard to know but by that pic my guess is it's part of the alternator and with the hole suggest it's at least part inside and should be covered by warranty still. Testing could be bypassing this whole thing and inconclusive. Only having 12.1 volts with a running engine isn't enough. If belt is tight enough and not just a disconnect alternator, burned plug, bad wiring my best guess is this alternator is bad.

Part was not available at two places I just checked so it would mean whole alternator,

Have you tested the battery voltage with the engine idling and no accessories on?

To me that noise is more like an electric motor failing. Why the idle not so sure so let other chime in.

I may not be around too much for some of the day but will suggest some things you could try if you can.
To me the noise could be travelling away from where you might think the source is. It's clear enough you could probably hear it with a mechanic's stethoscope or just a listening rod to your ear. Careful doing that around moving parts.


Could rule out any belt driven item by taking belt off and just run for a quick while to see if noise goes away and if so spin the items on that belt by hand for feel.


To me that noise sounded almost exactly like a small electric motor like a washer pump - power door lock size motor type something gone bad or disconnected and would have to be to spin that much but not near the engine at all. The ticking sounded like normal noise to me from injectors.


That's about it until you can peg it down more precisely. I doubt crank sensor makes that noise even if there's a problem with that circuit?

First things first, I would get that cam sensor code resolved.

That noise is tough. Would need to be there to hear what area it is coming from. Smog pump,alternator, cooling fan, anything that moves really could make that noise, including engine components.

Sounds like a vacuum leak. If you snap the throttle, does the noise go away? Take a spray bottle with water and spray around the intake manifold. If you hit the leak, it will make a sucking noise and change pitch.

It was a huge vacuum leak between plastic intake manifold and motor. Manifold had cracked somehow

So sorry everyone! Never been here...didn't realize it was considered hijacking or that I was breaking rules. I'm just a 29 year old girl, trying to figure out why her car isn't working properly. I had the alternator replaced in my 2006 Mazda Tribute, and just like the original poster - my keyless entry currently unlocks all doors, except the drivers side door. Additionally, the 'low tire pressure' light flashes for the initial 20-30 seconds that the car is on. Just can't seem to find help....

We just replaced the seized alternator and put on a new OEM belt, when we let it run after 5 seconds or so we heard a very loud squeal. Checked the tension of the belts, seemed okay, maybe a little loose. We noticed a piece of plastic rubbing against one of the pulleys and actually it being cut/melted because of the friction. We don't know what this pulley does or why this plastic is in the way. Maybe when the old belt broke it hit this and slightly moved it.

Pics aren't helping me anyway. Are all pulleys in a "plane" with each other? Wrong alternator pulley maybe? While belt is off spin the other items to see if they are good.


IDK - is crank pulley in line with others? All questions, sorry. Do # of grooves in pulleys match the new alternator? Was the old alternator really seized up tight and couldn't turn at all? No warning on that?


There aren't usually many surprises like this without something being obviously wrong,

I can't remember the orientation of the pulleys, a plane sounds right but I'll have to confirm when I can (car is 30 miles north of me). I don't think it's the wrong alternator pulley, belt fit nicely within the grooves and it spun freely and fit nicely. Good that you mentioned spinning the other pulleys, the one in question which is presumed to be grinding wasn't as smooth to rotate as the new alternator pulley. In fact it had a slight tick noise to it and a tactile feel - definitely wasn't 100% free unless that's how this pulley's supposed to work.

We aren't sure which pulley this is, lowest one on the engine.

Old alternator was completely seized.

Must all be in line/plane or couldn't rub! That or the item I can't see moved somehow into the way?


I don't have the belt routing diagram real handy but think I can find it later. AutoZone's site may show it if not still on a sticker underhood - most are.


This has to look good right away with new belt driven parts and belt or don't even try to start it. Crank pulley may have slipped out or another but you should see that easily by eye if putting the belt on correctly it would stand out like a sore thumb,

We've had it running, and it's fine for the first 5 seconds or so, then the squeal and some black dust emits. The alternator belt is warm compared to the serpentine belt.

If this is the crank pulley causing the issue, any idea what this plastic right next to it would be?

That looks like the water pump is digging in to the timing cover. Something is coming apart in either the water pump or the timing belt.
