This is on a 2000 Honda Odyssey, v6 3.5. The battery and starter are about 3 years old. It has the original Alternator.

It looks like my battery is discharging overnight, and this just started. I went out Sunday morning to start it and it would do anything, not even a clicking from the starter. I pulled the battery and starter and had them tested at AutoZone and they tested fine. When I put all back together it started fine. Voltage across the battery is 12.8v and when it is running I get 14.5v. Everything tests OK. The next day, Monday evening, the car had not been driven, and when I opened the door the lights looked real dim. The van wouldn't start and I had to charge the battery. After charging, I connected the battery, and got nothing when I tried to start it. I tapped the starter with a hammer, and them it started. These are strange problems. This evening (tuesday) I did some more trouble shooting and feel like the battery is just border-line going bad, or maybe something is discharging it over night, which is why it wouldn't start sunday morning after being driven several times saturday.

Does anyone have any ideas? One specific question is this; I disconnected the Neg battery cable and the tested the voltage between the NEG post and the NEG cable that was disconnected. It read 12.8v. I thought in this circumstance that I should read no voltage. This tells me something may be shorted, UNLESS, this is normal for this vehicle. I was told by a mechanic that internal computer systems will sometimes power up when battery power is restored after being disconnected. Is this normal? Also, other than the radio, do other items draw power when the vehicle is off? If so, I wouldn't think it would be enough to discharge a battery, or maybe my 3 year-old battery is just failing.

Any help would be appreciated.

As Tom indicated, your first step is to have the battery tested. you can't go any further without a known good battery. If you need to test for a draw, here is how it is done. You never measure voltage, only amps.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 10 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.

You check for drain by milliamps and may not have one. A battery can kill itself and with it charged if tapping on starter worked that's a strong clue that it's NG or by chance connections just aren't good enough. These things can test as good and not be. Batteries HATE going dead and self destruct and can't take that too many times,

I hope that someone can help me! I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey minivan. A few days ago, as I was backing up, I heard a scraping and looked underneath to see a piece of metal scraping the ground. I called AAA for a tow and the AAA guy said that it was the heat shield on the catalytic converter and that he would remove it for me right there. He lifted the front of my van with his truck and removed the shield, then left. Afterward, when I got in to drive my van, the D on the panel was blinking and it wouldn't go forward in drive, only first gear. It would also go in reverse. I drove it in first to a shop, where he did a diagnostic and code DTC P0748 came up, a clutch pressure control valve. He said it was a transmission problem and he couldn't fix it. I had it towed to the dealership and they say that I need a new alternator! There were no problems with the battery before the heat shield incident. I don't know who to believe but it can't just be a coincidence that my car won't run after the shield came off, can it? Could the scraping have hurt the transmission?

Guess: If somehow that heat shied dropped off and still on at one end it might have messed up stuffswinging and possibly messing with wires pertinant to assorted possible symptoms. I would thing some evidence would be seen?
