92 Eagle Talon Electrical problems

Question From fishinhic on 92 Eagle Talon Electrical problems

1992 Eagle Talon, 1.6 DOHC Turbo, 250,000 miles. Car died, wouldn't start until we put jumper cables on, as soon as a cable was disconnected the car would die, put the cable back on and it would run off other vehicle. Pulled the Alternator, had it tested, it failed. Put new Alternator on and now not much works, only lights, door chime, and dome light. No other dash warning lights work, radio does not work, nor does the heater fan. Checked all fuses and fusable links, they are ok. Tried to jump and push start the car and there is no fire. We replaced the battery about a week before the car died because there was a problem with it, After putting Alternator I even tried to switch batteries, nothing is working. Could this be in the ignition switch? Please help, I am lost. Thank you in advance for your help.

Response From Hammer Time

Check all your main fuses/fusible links first. Then check the battery connections for any small wires that you neglected to hook back up.

Response From fishinhic Top Rated Answer

Checked all fuses, and fusable links, checked for loose wires, replaced the ignition switch, still nothing. Could this be in a relay?

1997 Eagle Vision ESI- Turn Signals

Showing 2 out of 2 Posts
Question From yesterda on 1997 Eagle Vision ESI- Turn Signals

I have a 97 Eagle Vision that the turn signals have stopped working on. The lights don't even come on, let alone blink.

A couple of weeks ago the battery got drained down in the cold and the car wouldn't start. We jumped the battery and the turn signals worked. The next time the car was turned on the turn signals were once again not working.

I'm not sure what could be causing this. A mechanic told me that it might be the turn signal switch or possibly a relay.

What could this be, and how hard would it be to fix myself?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

This could be tricky. I can say that many brake lights and turn signals are the same bulb and socket and if you keep finding a dead battery I would check those out first. If your battery goes dead too many times it's "game over" for that battery and just jumping it works but can kill the alternator also if overworked. T

Question From Keith03 on I Eagle Talon problem

Hi I have a 1995 Eagle Talon ESI 2.0 non-turbo 5 speed with 165,xxx miles. I have this problem where it will lose all power to it and cut off, but when its cold and I try to start it for the first time it will turn over just fine and drive just fine, but when I turn it off for a while and try to go out and do something it will try to start up but quickly die or it will take about 5-7 times to try and keep it either running or trying to start it. Also when it is driving fine and say about after an hour or so of driving it will begin to bog out and die. I have replaced the plugs and wires, the coil pack, the belt, I have a aftermarket air intake on it, replaced the vacuum hoses, new oil pan. there are days i will have no problem and a lot of the days I have non stop problems with it and it is starting to piss me off. I don't want to sell it i want to figure out the problem and keep the car. If anyone that is a DSM enthusiast please help because I'm just now getting into fixing my own car and I'm in a dead end spot. I thought it was the alternator or starter but some of the mechanics I went to said it was not the problem. I have also thought it was the battery but i took the battery out and put it on a tester and it was just fine as well. I have also fixed every problem that came up on the car reader and i still have the same problems and its just confusing now. Please help i'll give you a cookie

Response From Tom Greenleaf

I have a aftermarket air intake on it,

^^ Question that^^

Have you checked fuel pressure while it is acting up? Will it hold?

Exhaust restrictions? Worth a check too.
Gotta ask why it needed an oil pan too?

T

Response From Keith03 Top Rated Answer

I have checked the exhaust it's fine except the tiny tiny leak in the exhaust. I have not checked the fuel pressure not to sure on how to do that. like I said I'm just a newbie at this. the reason for the new oil pan because when I got the the car the oil pan had a bad leak in it.

Response From Hammer Time

I have checked the exhaust it's fine

Impossible..................... You have no idea how to even test for a restriction.

Response From Keith03

Your right I don't know but I had my mechanic look at it and he said it was fine so I went with his word

Response From Hammer Time

I still doubt it was tested properly. It needs to be pressure tested and the vacuum readings analyzed during the failure.

Talon Tranny Trouble

Question From Shibumi on Talon Tranny Trouble

I have a '96 Eagle Talon ESI (non turbo) with an automatic transmission and about 185000 kms on it. Recently it's developed the following little habit... within the first five minutes of driving, if I come to a stop, sometimes the car won't go again when I hit the gas. The engine will rev, but the car won't move. It will eventually go, and shifting into and out of park or neutral seems to help. After the first few minutes of driving, it doesn't happen again... apparently it's only when the car has been sitting overnight or so. I could be wrong on this, but it seems that the quicker I stop, the more likely it is to happen.

Just wondering if anyone has any general ideas before I take it to a garage.

Response From Shibumi Top Rated Answer

Thanks guys, I'll check the level. Wouldn't have thought I'd say this, but here's to hoping there's a leak somewhere :)... I'm not liking the alternative.

Response From cutlassupreme47

I hear you. Better to know about a problem than to think you're 100% fine and then... straight out of the box men.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Hope for the best and plan for the worst. If you need serious help and have a regular mechanic ask them where to go (Most shops don't take on transmission overhaul) Good luck, T

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Sounds like classic low fluid. If you find it low and the color is good it will fix it for now but transmissions don't use fluid so there's a leak that needs to be found and fixed. If you don't find it low there could be some serious trans work/rebuild needed and hang on to your wallet! T

Response From DanD

Check the fluid level; make sure the transmission is full. If it’s full the problem is inside which may mean a rebuild. It won’t be an external adjustment they don’t change between a cold or warm condition.

altenator check

Showing 2 out of 3 Posts | Show 1 Hidden Posts
Question From clt400 on altenator check

Can I check my altenator to see if it is working by disconnecting the battery while the car is running? Should the car stay running? (92 eagle talon)

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Some may and some may not. Just put a voltmeter on it which should read 12V+ if off for a while and perhaps 14.5V with it running. That could vary a bit but not too much, should be more that 12V while running and you are probably OK. If your battery is older than 3-4 years I would suspect it if you have troubles. T

Response From DanD Top Rated Answer

Just to back-up what Tom is telling you.
Don’t ever purposely disconnect the battery while the engine is running, you maybe very sorry if you do. As in burning out electronic devices that do not like voltage spikes as you open and close the battery connection.
Maybe back in the 50’s and 60’s it was a back-yarder’s way of checking the charging system but that was when they used generators or an alternator with an external mechanical voltage regulator. The only electronic device on the car was possibly a single transistor in the radio.
Get a voltmeter take a battery voltage reading before you start the car; start the car and take another reading. You should see anywhere form a volt to three-volt increase at the battery almost immediately. If it stays the same or goes down in voltage the charging system is not working, it doesn’t tell you why just that it isn’t.
Dan.
