  • DENSO alternators are not only original equipment on many of the world's top production cars; they are a favorite in motorsports as well, where their light weight, high efficiency, and durability under the most demanding conditions make them the natural choice. Remanufactured DENSO alternators go through a grueling process. Stators and rectifiers are tested to 300 volts, while rotors are submitted to 600 volts, all to ensure reliable performance. Rotor slip rings are buffed to an 8 micron surface finish, with runout limited to 20 microns, minimizing brush wear and abrasion. Bearings are validated to OE standards and loaded with premium OE standard lubricants. New or remanufactured, a DENSO alternator is a quality component. Offered in versions from 40 to 160 amperes and beyond for hundreds of specific vehicle applications, all alternators meet DENSO's rigorous First Time Fit standards. Contemporary cars employ dozens of sophisticated electronic systems from bumper to bumper, placing heavy demands on the charging system. The alternator is no place to cut corners. DENSO First Time Fit alternators meet or exceed all manufacturer standards, mount properly with a minimum of installation issues, and provide years of reliable service. Features. Premium cores and precise OE assembly benchmarks; Design to meet the grueling heat and electrical requirements; First Time Fit provides perfect mounting with no belt/pulley alignment issues; Benefits. Service professionals preferred DENSO's alternators for a trouble free solution; OE quality fit, appearance, and durability; Full compatibility with sensitive electronics systems; Compact and lightweight design

Question From ruppert92 on 1993 Dodge Spirit Engine sounds strange

This is a link to what my Engine sounds like running in idol:

Don't know if its related, but just in case it is:
My car would not start one morning, but started after a jump. Now i just noticed that my engine is sounding like this.

Know problems:
-small oil leak
-heater core malfunction

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Not a nice sound. Try taking belt off and start it, if noise is gone spin the pulleys for any that don't feel right especially the alternator as it didn't start which may or may not be related but if it took a jump start for whatever reason if a bad or near dead battery it could have seriously overheated/overworked alternator and damaged it.

Hard to say too much without witnessing these things but hope it's that simple. Check that it charges a known good battery all charged up - don't make the car do it.

* Small oil leak? Gotta hunt that down.

* What's up with the heater core?

Merry Christmas,

T

Response From ruppert92

Alright thanks I'll give that a try and update on what if find. The oil leak is a simple fix, and I know where its coming from. Also with the heater core I have antifreeze getting on the inside of my windows.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

OK: Oil leak you seem to know what it is and some are nothing and some can take out your engine for lack of oil.

Heater core is leaking if fogging up windows. You won't like how much work those can be even though not to costly in parts. Keep coolant full till you decide on that job.

Noise again: You'll know if it's belt driven fast with belt(s) off and a run but not long enough to overheat - just long enough to see it that noise is gone or not.

Good luck. If too many items at once are wrong you can decide on fixing everything or jump to a newer vehicle,

T

Response From ruppert92

Ok so i tryed the thing where you take the positive off the battery while the car is running, and my car kept running so the alternator is fine correct? Had my battery tested at autozone, and it was at 13v fully charged so thats probably the reason my car didnt start. Also he said it may be a loose bearing and to use a stethoscope against the part that is located above the alternator. I did that, and It sounded like it may be comming from there.

Response From Hammer Time

Ok so i tryed the thing where you take the positive off the battery while the car is running, and my car kept running so the alternator is fine correct?

That is the fastest way known to fry every computer in your car. That should never be done on a computer car.

Response From Discretesignals

Why do we have a rash of people unplugging their alternators while the engine is running lately? If you want to see if your alternator is charging, put a volt meter on the battery terminals.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

That was a dumb test to see if a GENERATOR would work as they didn't require a battery - alternators do as we know. Holy crap, gotta wonder how many things have been fried with trying that stupid trick which is no info anyway.

Folks, generators for cars pretty much ended in the 1960s or quickly when much smaller and lighter ALTERNATORS became the way as they put out about as many amps as they are going to at a much lower RPM vs generators which would just keep putting out more consistent with RPMs and some were manually regulated - I OWN ONE!

The idea of taking the belt off was to check for noise or not, not whether alternator put anything out or not and while belt was off see if noise was easy to find spinning bearing items by hand.

A 93 Dodge Spirit probably just sustained enough damage to hurry to find another car,

T

Response From ruppert92 Top Rated Answer

Alright people please calm down. I don't really know anything about cars, but I am capable of removing and replacing things, so when an automotive professional tells me to do something, then I assume that they know what they're talking about and have done it before. I just did that test cause i dont trust myself putting the belt back on correctly after removal. If I use a stethoscope on the compressor and the alternator instead of removing the belt and spinning them, would that also work fine? Also my car is still running fine.

Response From Hammer Time

an automotive professional tells me to do something

And there lies the error. They are sales clerks and tech wannabes who give out a lot of advice on subjects that they are not trained in. Professional couldn't be further from the truth. They are in the parts selling business.

Response From nickwarner

Ok, you didn't know better. You thought the guy at the parts store was experienced with cars and could give sound advice. Yes, the guys are jumping around when they heard you pulled a cable on a running engine. I cringed a good bit myself. Please realize, as HT hit squarely on the head, that parts guys aren't mechanics. They are salesman who happen to sell parts for your car. Some are decent, most are idiots and if they knew what they were talking about that much they would be making a living fixing cars which pays much better than the $10 at the store does. You can get access to repair information free of charge at autozone.com, which can show you the right way to get the belt off and back on again so you can see if the noise is in the accessory drive or the internals of the motor. Please realize that we react to the unhooking of the battery like this because every single on of us would be fired on the spot were we to do this in the shops that we work. Ignore advice from parts people. Take advice from the experts (us) who don't tell you to do something that can and will fry an ECM (expensive thing worth more than a 93 Shadow). We won't give ideas out like that one.

Response From ruppert92

Alright everyone, thanks for the help and now I know that these employees know less than the average consumer expects. I'll do the belt test tomorrow, and if it's a bearing like I expect, hoe easy or difficult of a fix would that be?

Response From nickwarner

everything except the ac clutch bearing are simple bolt ons requiring no special tools and no degree of difficulty beyond the scope of a DIY guy in his driveway with the proper instructions.

The guy at autozone told me to do it, so I trusted him... my bad. But back to the point, if the alternator is fine is it probably a bearing in the a/c compressor. Or could it still be something with the alternator?

Question From Guest on 1993 Dodge Spirit Fuel, spark issues

Just curious if you don't get spark at the coil but if u bypass it does that have to do with the crank sensor?? Also will the fuel pump not kick on if there is no spark?

Need help ASAP

Car was running fine Sat night and just died and now can't get it started there is no spark?

Response From DanD

Not really sure what you mean by
don't get spark at the coil but if u bypass it does
What are you bypassing?

Engine size would also help?

If there’s no spark and the problem is solely an ignition one; no the computer will not authorize the fuel pump to continue too run.
If all else is normal; you should be able to hear the fuel pump run for a couple of seconds when the ignition is first turned on. This is call the prime cycle; the computer turns the pump on to begin pressurizing the fuel system, allowing the pump to run for the couple of seconds. If the computer doesn’t sense an RPM signal (spark), once you begin to crank the engine; it will leave the pump off.

it is a 2.5l 4 cylinder

if u hook a hot direct from battery to the hot side of coil u have spark so the coil is not bad

have changed the pickup coil, map senser and checked timing any other ideas???

Back in those years of Chrysler products they had an issue with a common splice connection that fed power to the ignition coil, fuel injectors, alternator field circuit and a portion of the computer, that went bad.

This splice connection was a stamp-welded connection that fused (welded) a number of wires together and then just covered with tape for insulation. The tape wasn’t good enough and it would corrode; allowing portions of the welded wiring too break away.

With a test light connected to coil positive and the ground lead clipped onto a known good ground; turn the ignition on. The test light should light for a couple of seconds and then go off, just like the “prime cycle” of the fuel pump.

If this is not happening; the problem is likely this splice.

There is a chance that the problem is the auto shutdown (ASD) relay; I’ve only had to replace or repair connections at an ASD a few times. I’ve repaired the splice a number of times.

You’ll find the ASD on the left inner fender, along with the starter, fuel pump, AC, a cooling fan relays.

When you turn on the ignition the ASD & fuel pump relays should click on and then off, then turn back on, as you begin to crank the engine (prime cycle).

The ASD will likely have the same color wire leaving it that goes to the different components that it feeds power to.

I don’t have access to my wiring diagrams, right now but I think the wire is a blue or green wire (can’t remember); just have a look at the coil positive, injector & alternator field feeds, they all should be the same color?

The next trick is to find the splice because it is inside the wiring harness, along the left inner fender, close to the auto shutdown relay; somewhere between the battery and the fire wall.

Sorry I’m being a bit vague but I’m at my weekend trailer and don’t have access to my manuals.

Question From armor452 on Electrical Issue from Cross-Jumping cables on accident.

Hello, here is my vehicle info: 1989, Dodge, Spirit, 2.5L Mileage/unknown over 100k

Ok it was dark and my battery needed a jump from lights being left on (yes Im an idiot) I jumped the vehicle incorrectly putting the positive on negative and negative on positive. Needless to say this ended with smoke...and a single wire was singed as far as I can tail this wire leads directly to the battery with the main battery cable. I stripped the wire and connected it and wrapped it in electrical tape. What seems to be happening is the battery is getting overcharged while running because It has already killed off another battery it will run for a few days with now problems but then wont start unless it is jumped. I had the alternator tested and it checked out good. So I am at a loss. I know the severed wire has to have something to do with it but what should I replace. Right next to where the wire is severed is what bulge in the wire which is what I believe is a fuseable link.....could that be the issue? I also considered the voltage regulator but Im not sure if my vehicle has an internal or external regulator. Any insight you can provide to my situation will be appreciated.

Response From Hammer Time

There is a fusible link or Maxi fuse that runs between the alternator output and the battery that is probably burnt out.
