I have a 95 Dodge Neon 5spd 4cyl SOHC, that will not charge the battery, I had the Alternator tested and its still good. Any suggestions on how to fix it would be much appreciated.

Hi there! I just replaced the clutch on my 95 (same model as yours) and when I was done I fired it up and I ran into the same problem, I got my alternator tested and a new battery, checked all connections and grounds, and my battery still won't charge or hold the charge. I'm not sure what the problem is but maybe it's a broken wire between the battery and the alternator and its shorting out or i was thinking there's no regulator on the alternator it self it's and external one somewhere near the computer unit and I don't know if that would make this problem if it was faulty but that's the only thing I haven't tested. If u guys got any suggestions toss it at me! Thanks -Bert

This could be a problem with the PCM that is the acting voltage regulator. The question is what to do on a 1995 Neon IMO. Are you sure this alternator tested OK?

If so I think I'd aggressively be checking the battery itself, all connections known good. Keep battery charged with a charger. Have a real voltmeter to show you this thing is or isn't putting out proper operating voltage at least while in the vehicle and go from there. Volts are not the same as the amps but would be telling if anything was happening with engine running,

I replaced the battery in my neon with the one out of a dodge d 50 and forgot that the d 50 has reverse terminals so consequently i hooked the battery up backwards and now the car wont start. I put a new starter in. checked fuses and relays, even traced wires. The little brown and black wire coming off the back of the starter dont get any power. I traced it up the the starter relay where i lost the wire. Best i could tell it had something to do with the yellow wire that runs from the relay to the ignition (which has power). Then i checked the button under the clutch peddle and i has no power to or from it at any time. This is where i stopped. it could be the clutch sensor, the computer, the alternator or any other number of things. But i do now its NOT the starter or the relay. at this point any advice is good advise. Thanx.

I have no specifics for this car but just check every fuse you can find for continuity and with a test light that both sides light up. Some won't light either if not enabled.

Fusible link is just wire looking and generally will wrinkle up as wire inside has blown. Follow the path of wires with a test light as best you can. One to alternator should be hot. That's general ideas of how things work. Reversing polarity could be a real problem with some items as much is controlled by a BCM (body control module) which may also control alternator on this.

Ignition sends voltage to trigger the solenoid for the starter which itself probably wouldn't be killed by that especially if you didn't try to start it and caught the problem right away.

Just hope there's some failsafe wire or fuses as this could have done extensive damage depending on how long or what you attempted while it was reversed.

Don't just go replacing parts like the starter without testing them. Those you can make work on the floor with jumper cables or take the unit to many parts outlets for testing before tossing it.

If that battery was fully installed and clamped in and you tried to start it I just can't say how much would be damaged by the reverse polarity. Hope you get lucky,

Your going to have to get hold of wiring diagrams. The circuit the fuse protects feeds the oxygen sensor heaters, alternator field, PCM, fuel injectors, ignition coils, and the fuel pump. The short could be in any of those items or the wiring.

The short is after the ASD relay because the fuse pops when the ignition is turned on.

Your going to have to unplug each item one at the time to see if the short goes away. If you have everything unplugged and the short is still there it is in the wiring somewhere. That could be a pain to find because the wiring is spliced at certain points, so you can't break the circuits down by disconnecting inline connectors.

Do a very good visual inspection of the wiring. Look at harnesses for chaffing. Check the O2 sensor wiring and make sure it isn't melted to the exhaust.

i think its time for a timing belt change. i took my car to 2 different mechanics . the first mechanic told me that i need a new timing belt because he could hear it "slapping" against something and would charge $300 to replace the timing belt and the water pump. to get another mechanics opinion, i took it to my cousins fiance which works at a local dodge dealer garage so that he could take a look at it. he first told me that my car DID NOT have a timing belt and that the only belts on my car are a serpentine belt, power steering belt and my fan belt. we popped the hood, turned the car on for a little bit to let it run. we turned it off after it ran for about 5 mins. he looked at all the belts closely and he pointed out that the belt connected to the alternator had cracks in it and referred it as the serpentine belt, not the timing belt. he said that thats the only belt that mechanic #1 could have been talking about when he told me that my timing belt needs changed. i need ANY advice possible ASAP. this is my only form of transportation for work. thanks everyone!

I assume this guy is not a mechanic and washes cars or something because your car most definitely has a timing belt and if it fails while you're driving, it will do thousands of dollars in engine damage. $300 is a real deal to do that belt. It's no easy job at all. the entire engine has to be disconnected and shifted to the side to gain enough access to change the belt. You should also be replacing the water pump during that process as it is driven by the timing belt.

Ya, $300 is really cheap to do a water pump and belt component kit on that engine. Make sure whoever you have do this is licensed and insured.

If you have Billy Bob Joe do this at his house in the back yard for $300 bucks and something goes wrong later or after the repair and it bends all the valves in the engine, your going to be out a lot more money than you saved. I hope I am not wasting my keystrokes.

If you need to be told where the timing belt is on this thing, you have no business touching it and the $300 you were quoted is dirt cheap. The guy is underbidding himself. I'd charge more like $450 easy. Its not like a serp belt you just take off and throw on. This requires special (expensive) tools and the right man doing the right procedure to do it. Its not in the novice realm for a DIY job. If you are just a fraction of a turn off of aligning the pulleys you will wreck parts you don't even know the name of but will quickly find the price of.
