I have recently replaced my alternator on my 1996 Chrysler LHS. I was expecting to have to replace that either way. And I know that alternators drain the battery. When I was finished replacing the alternator I went to AutoZone and got the battery charged up. They said it was a good battery and fully charged. When I got it back into the car however the car still said battery was low.

I have heard that alternaters can be bad even if they are brand new ....


I was wondering if it could be anything else like the wires for the battery or something?

I dont know much about cars...Im a 23 year old female who is just learning about cars...it is only my 2nd car!

Well I commend you for not only taking a proactive approach to your car but asking questions about what you don't know. The very first thing that should be looked at in any sort of electrical problem are the quality of your power and ground connections. They need to be shiny and tight. A battery post cleaner can be had for a few bucks at any parts store. After getting your posts clean, be sure to coat liberally around it with dielectric grease. This seals the contacts from moisture and battery gasses that cause corrosion. Also, your wires must hook elsewhere from the battery. Ground goes to the engine block, and power goes to the starter and to the main fuse/relay center. These must be cleaned up as well. No matter how good your battery and alternator are, having bad connections is akin to kinking over a garden hose. All you get out of the end is a trickle. One thing I have learned is not to always trust a factory gauge unless you verify its accuracy. Put a multimeter on the battery to see actual voltage and see if it matches the dash reading. If you suspect your alternator is bad, which can happen occasionally, have the parts store test it. They will have to do this for warranty anyhow if its a bad part. Hope this isn't what I'm afraid of - the voltage regulation (voltage regulator) is mounted on an inner fender shield and controlled by the car's PCM which isn't serviceable on it's own and would need replacement - arggh. Hope not.

Haven't run into that but this if the problem and too pricey and the only thing effected by a failure of PCM can have an external regulator put on it which is custom 'hackery' if you will. Get that new alternator tested and if it tests good you may want to seek some help to be sure what is really wrong before it gets too pricey. All this still requires the connections Nick mentioned being known good as well,

I am attempting to help my sister with her 1996 Chrysler LHS 6cyl. Could anyone tell me where the PCM/ECM is located on this vehicle? Also, I noticed in this post that someone mentioned the voltage regulator was on an inside fender. Is this correct?

are you experiencing any other problem aside from the warning sign things like you can't start your car or your headlight won't turn on? because it is possible that your battery meter is the problem too in order for you to know that there really is a problem with the alternator is if there are other signs, or you could let it check the charging power of the alternator if it discharges the battery or not.

But it runs well now and the battery light went off as soon as it was plugged in all the way.

That's not uncommon, bearing do go on those & when the do it usually seizes up. Now if you just put a belt on it & cranked the tensioner down with an impact gun, that wouldn't of been good for it...........

I have a '92 Lebaron with the 3.0 V6 and only 65k on the clock. When I first picked up the car, it would seem like while driving it if i gave it gas then quickly let off the gas everything would dim and the rpms would drop almost to the point of stalling. Now, since the car sees almost no use it seems as if the battery is always dead and requires a jump just to start. The previous owner replaced the battery, so is it safe to assume the alternator is the problem? (the belt seems fine). Is there a voltage regulator on this car? Also the check engine light is now on when the car is running.

Sense the engine light is on that would be the way to finding the problem, you have to have the codes read, at autozone or somewhere they do OBDI testing or you can try yourself using the info from this link

To add: Even the new battery could be junk from going dead too much and especially if below freezing. Try charging that and then test it and bet you do find the alt (regulator inside it) is bad. Some of the Crystler cars are finicky about a good battery or they don't run well just because of that??

Do get the codes as Dave suggests and figure the rest out after the battery and alternator are known ok,

Actually the voltage regulator is built into the computer and is non serviceable, other then replacing the computer.
If by chance the regulator is at fault, there is a way of wiring in and older style of external regulator But you had be pretty familiar with the system or you could get yourself into a lot of trouble. As in letting the smoke out of some of the electronic boxes; not a good thing. LOL

I think as soon as Chrysler went electronic fuel injection; they went with computer controlled charging system or at least when they went with the high output alternators. The next time you start up an older Chrysler have a listen and you’ll hear the alternator kick in after about 5 or 10 seconds; after the engine has stabilized.
I believed their thinking was to have the engine stable and then throw the load of the alternator at those poor old 2.2 Lt. K-cars; in the hope it didn’t stall out. LOL

I have a 1993 Chrysler Town & Country MiniVan with a 3.3L eng. I need to replace the alternator and it's been a few years since I've done this, the last time my car had the old "V" belt around the alternator but this has a flat belt. The alt. looks easy enough but how do you handle the belt?? How do your loosen it & then tighten it back. A diagram would help.

Is there a special tool or trick that is needed to get the lower bolt off the alternator. It set's next to the fire wall & I can't even get a socket on the bolt head. You have to approach it from the drivers side & you can't even see the bolt head.

It's best reached from under the van . Best done with a floor jack and a good set of jackstands . If your going to be a DiY'er, it's the price you pay .As your skills increase so will your tool and equipment collection . Before you know it you will be almost brought to tears when your wife gives you a 3/8 drive triple chrome plated 30' offset fine tooth ratchet costing two days pay for an anniversary gift.

This is the serpentine belt system, 1 belt runs everything. There is a diagram on the core support or thereabouts showing the proper routing of the belt if you take it completly off. There is 1 pully that is a belt tensioner, it has a bolt in the middle of it (usually) that you put a wrench on and it will move up, allowing freeplay on the belt. Slide the belt off the alternator pulley and release the tension from the idler pulley. Then you can R&R the alt. Of course the battery has been disconnected, same way as the V-belt engines.

Help! I am helping my father-in-law change the alternator on his 1993 Chrysler Town and Country. It has the 3.3L engine. Everything is disconnected (bolts, belt, wires), and it is free... but we can't get it out of the van. Chilton's says it must be removed from underneath. We get it all the way down and the catalytic converter, floorboard and the frame won't let it pass. We tried every twist and turn we could imagine.

The mounting bracket on the top won't allow it to be removed from above. That bracket runs down the entire left side of the motor.

Is there a trick to getting it out from underneath?

Without seeing it, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust pipe(s) from the manifold to lower the exhaust enough to remove the alternator. Not uncommon. Some Hondas' require drive axle removal to gain access.
