Question From Guest on mitsubishi eclipse '93

I have a '93 Mitsubishi Eclipse and it starts and then immediately shuts off. We replaced the air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, battery and checked the alternator. The only way it will stay running is if I have my foot on the gas...almost like a clutch..but its an automatic transmission. Any ideas???

Question From baggins02 on 2001 mitsubishi mirage 1.8 82,000 miles

My 2001 mitsubishi mirage (automatic trans . 1.8... 82,000miles) has no power when accelerating ...I have replaced the fuel filter and checked air filter but problem still exists what is my next step?

Response From HYdrogen_on_Demand Top Rated Answer

you may have air in the injector manifold line. Use a fuel pressure tester to (burp) the line. You can also increase ferformance and reduce your gas bill at the pump by adding this technology to your car...... Link removed by moderator. Wrong forum for this.
They are presently offering a free seven day cource so it won't cost anything to check it out !!

Good luck !!

Response From Double J

I would start with getting a code reading and having the fuel pressure checked.

Fuel Pressure Specifications:

Curb idle 38 PSI Curb idle w/vacuum disconnected 47 - 50 PSI

Question From inmedude627 on please help water trough intake

my car sucked water trough intake then there was white smoke out of the exaust and then it stoped when i started the car it was blowing black smoke so i replaced the spark plugs but still has the black smoke also at low rpms it stalls but at hig rpms works normal and runs good
my car is an mitsubishi eclipse 1995 2.0L DOCH that is the 420A n/t

Response From dave284

Black smoke means the vehicle is burning very rich fuel mixture...please explain a little more on the water thing with the intake...was the car alright before this happened?

Response From inmedude627

also the water thing is that it was raining and the car kind of sucked water and it start staling and when i looked in the rear view mirror i saw white smoke so i turned the car off and then started back on and it wasnt blowing white smoke but it was stalling

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Oh Oh!! Lot's of things won't like the water trick! Just how deep was the car when it sucked in water? Who knows what got wet that should stay dry. You saw the white smoke and that's bad enough if the engine didn't just blow you are lucky so far.

All air intake items need to be removed, dried, and air filter probably replaced as I'm unsure if it will dry out ok. It may be choking on it's own air filter and other items that are still wet. How long has it been?

T

Response From inmedude627

it has been just one day im waiting till monday to go to a repair station

Response From inmedude627

also the air filter wasnt submerged in water it was the rain

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

That's still about the same. If water made it far enough to get into cylinders then it passed thru the air filter - right?

T

Response From inmedude627

well yes i think so but the car still rus great the only thing is that in low rpms uit stall but keeps around 500 to 700 rpms

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Everything suggest that liquid water actually made it into the intake. Filter being wet would screw things up by itself. Other controls in line of air flow may have been damaged. If more water had really been drawn in it would have been a fast "game over" for this engine! The snorkeling of the path of air may still have water. If you can - I'd take things from port where air enters to throttle body apart and dry them out at least for now,

T

Response From Guest

ok thank but can u explai why the car runs normal at high rpms?
and not at low ones

Response From inmedude627

sorry i post as a guest newbie

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Just quickly re-read. You said the water was from it raining. That alone doesn't suck in water and blow white exhaust out unless it was really intense or splashing water or water on roadway too deep for travel.

You said you just looked in your rear view and saw white smoke. That could have been water on hot exhaust parts and not water sucked into engine but still seems to have been the cause of the problems now.

The fact that it can run at high rpms is a good thing so far. It's hard to say much more as I wasn't there when this happened to witness the severity of it. You simply must verify the air path is dry now - including the air filter or there's no guessing which is the best I can do with this anyway as this is not a routine problem!?

T

Response From inmedude627

ok man thank you so much i will take the car to a repair shop to see whats the problem thanks again!!!!!!

Response From inmedude627

yes everything was right the air fuel mixture only run rich in wot now it says its lean but its burnig too much fuel so at low rpms the car starts to stall and shake a lot

2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES stuttering

Question From iizjoe on 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES stuttering

Hello. I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer ES (~120k miles) that started acting weird on my way home from work last night. I don't know any technical terms but, it felt like it was underpowered in the sense that it was hard to accelerate and it felt like it was vibrating while I was trying to accelerate. Speeds below 40 seem ok when accelerating although I still feel a little bit of a struggle. Once I hit around 40mph, it seems like I'm still accelerating but the needle doesn't appear to move all that much. Maybe its just a psychological thing? When idling, it will vibrate off and on. And while at idle, I'll keep my foot down on the accelerator up to around 2k rpm and it will feel like its normal for a couple seconds, then it will start to vibrate for a couple seconds (it will keep doing this off and on). It also has a deeper sound to it like there's a leak in the exhaust/intake or something like that. I checked the basics such as the air filter, spark plugs/gaps, and a quick glance under the hood. After visually inspecting it, I figured it had to be internal or electrical. Any thoughts or suggestions as to what I can check out?

Response From iizjoe

Since there are no replies yet, I thought maybe I can try to kick things off a little. At first I thought it could of been a misfire but the shake isn't as violent as when I felt one on a previous car. Could I be wrong in ruling that out? Also, the engine light isn't on. Should I check / replace the fuel filter? From what I understand, these are in the gas tank which is accessible from under the rear seats. Again, this just suddenly happened so I'm not sure if that would be worth looking at.

Response From Tom Greenleaf

Are all maintenance items up to date?

If the engine is increasing RPM but the car isn't going faster that sounds like a transmission problem,

T

Response From iizjoe

Well yes and no. Everything but the transmission has been maintained. By that, I mean the filter/oil is the original (I assume since I bought it at 18k miles). So it could possibly be from the transmission? In that case I'm probably better off having it checked out from someone. But even if it were idle, the transmission could still have that effect on it?

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Yes - engine is turning transmission parts just sitting still in neutral so could be problems with the front (side) that attaches to the engine,

T

Response From iizjoe

Ok thanks for the info.

Hello,

When driving at any speed and actively pressing on the throttle the car performs stellar. When I let off the throttle or keep the throttle at a steady speed, the car sporadically feels like it has a loss of power and then resumes. It feels as if a huge gust of wind hits me. In the past I have had the CEL come on and then go away after a full tank of gas has been used. This has happened at least 3 times in a year or two. The only recent thing done to the vehicle has been charging the Air Conditioner. I thought the compressor was the culprit, but this problem happens with or without A/C running. I have done the following to rectify the current problem with zero success.

  • Changed the Spark Plugs (Not the cheapest ones, but not NGK's) Gapped at .044 per Autozone tech and manual
  • Used premium STP Fuel Injector Cleaner in the gas tank with a full tank of gas.
  • Changed Air Filter.
  • Oil and Filter changed.
  • Purchased throttle body cleaner and sprayed the outside of the throttle body (Thinking the cable might be seized up)

  • I am grateful for any suggestions and appreciate you taking the time to lend your expertise.

    Response From Discretesignals

This has happened at least 3 times in a year or two.

Do you mean the problem has occurred this much or the CEL coming on?

When the CEL came on did you have the computer scanned to see what trouble code(s) it was storing? If so, what were the code numbers?

    Response From AirborneGeekRanger

The CEL has come and gone several times. I attributed it to bad gas. The current problem has presented itself only recently and is still here. I did not have a code reader hooked up to the vehicle when the CEL light came on because it went away after a full tank of gas had been used. I will take it to Autozone today and see if any codes come up.

    Response From Hammer Time

I attributed it to bad gas.

That assumption couldn't be any less likely.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Yes, that helps a lot. The computer is seeing an issue with the Crank Sensor signal. It could be a bad sensor, a problem with any of the related wiring or even the computer itself.

I Just replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor and the problem is resolved. BTW, it was a Pain in the A$$. It resides behind the timing chain cover. Had to pull the passenger wheel, plastic shrouds, tensionor pully, static pully, harmonic balancer, and then finally the lower timing chain/belt cover.

    Tools used:

10 through 16mm wrenches and sockets
Cheater Bar with 1/4 end (Used to put the Serpantine belt back on the tensionor)
Flat Tip Screw driver (Used to pop off the plastic plugs that holds the shrouds in place)
    Small plyers
    Jack
    Lug Wrench
    Jack Stand

Thanks to all who provided advice.

The more information you can get, the better chance you may have formulating a strategy to figuring out where to look for the culprit.

Even though the light may have gone out. The engine controller can store the code(s) in history.
