2007 Kia Rio LX shut off while driving and won't start

Question From Yanceyhshs on 2007 Kia Rio LX shut off while driving and won't start

I have a 2007 Kia Rio LX. The car was running fine and then it randomly shut off while I was driving. The battery light cut on right before it shut off. When I try to start it back up it cranks and turns over but just doesn't start. I also smelled gas and there was smoke coming from the air filter. When I popped the casing that was covering the air filter smoke came out. I tried spraying the intake with starting fluid and that didn't do anything either. Can anyone help me to figure out what is going on?

Response From Discretesignals

Have the engine computer scanned to see if any trouble codes are stored. Write down the numbers and post them in here.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Don't get near this with starting fluid again for now!
Hey - Battery light just means it stalled in this case but the smell of gas and smoke in air cleaner is enough to leave this alone till you have a better clue of what's going on.

Maintenance items all up to date? No missing timing belts intervals and things? Can't know with just this but smoke, smell of fuel whatever is broken now (totally unknown) that is dangerous of course.

Get help if only to find out what exactly has happened and what might be required to fix it,

2010 Kia Rio5 misfire

Question From boonetampabay on 2010 Kia Rio5 misfire

I have a 2010 Kia Rio5 1.6L 83000 miles.
My Kia Rio5 has popped up three codes.
P0300
P0302
P0301
The car is running very rough but i put in gas and it made me not move. My car stalled and I was stranded. I then turned my ignition and my car started but stalled again. I then turned it again and gave it some gas and was not moving very fast maybe 2 MPH. I got home but after I let off the gas it stalled. I cleaned the Mass Air Filter with the spray but it is still giving off the same codes. I need to know what to do.

Response From Discretesignals

Those are misfire codes. Misfires will cause loss of power and a rough running engine. Did all these problems start right after you filled up the fuel tank?

Response From boonetampabay

They have been there but when i filled up this morning it just started very bad. it was there then i replaced my spark plugs and coils then it was still there. but it stalled after i put in gas

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

There are some things you need to figure out. First you need to find out which cylinders are misfiring, but the engine has to be running to do this.

The misfiring could be caused from an ignition, fueling, or mechanical problem in those cylinders that are missing. There are tests you can do to figure that out, but if you have no experience in diagnosing misfire issues or don't know how particular systems function, your going to have a really tough time figuring it out.

You may need to have it towed to your repair shop that has the equipment and trained techs that can determine the cause and fix.

Response From boonetampabay

i was wondering if i should get a compressor tester and check the pressure in my engine. I also have no idea where to find out where my fuel filter is for my car

Response From Discretesignals

You can do a compression test. You have to disable the ignition and fuel. The throttle has to be open and the battery has to be fully charged.

Fuel filter is part of the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank.

Powertrain Control Module.. Where is it?

Question From fosterstone on Powertrain Control Module.. Where is it?

Hello-
I had a 2006 Kia Rio 1.6L with 77K miles. The automatic transmission is stuck in 3rd gear.
I took it to several repair shops and they could not diagnose the problem.
I took it to a Kia dealer and they said I need a new powertrain control module (PCM).
The Kia dealer quoted me $1,100 to replace the PCM which I think is excessive.

Where is the PCM located on a 2006 Kia Rio?
What difficulties will I run into if I try to replace it myself?
Thanks, Foster Stone

Response From nickwarner

What is the cost of the PCM? The last one I had to estimate for a Kia was $960 just for the part. Most of that repair cost is probably parts.

Response From Discretesignals Top Rated Answer

PCM is located between the firewall and the air filter housing.

You could get a used one from a salvage yard and then have it flashed by the dealer to your vehicle. You just can't slap any old PCM in there, because the programming is unique to each vehicle.
