Noises from 98 Nissan Altima

Question From iyrrj on Noises from 98 Nissan Altima

hi

I bought this 98 nissan altima 4 months ago. ( Feb 2007 )
it has manual transmission.
Mileage -- 93 K ( Feb ) and now 98 K (June)

I have three issues :-

1) When I turn ( specially while turning left ), I hear a distinct
clunk below my foot on the floor. When I take a very nice slow
smooth turn it might not happen. However, when i make a sudden
turn this mostly ( may be always) happens.

I believe I hear the same sound when the car passes over bumps.
I have had problems with bumps for past 2-3 months.
I dont know if these two have the same cause.

Are these two related ? Can I do some small minor checks to help
diagnose the problem.

-----------------

2) When I break, specially when I come to halt from 40 mph to 0
I always hear a grinding kind of pulsating noise and sometimes
hear a squeaking noise. Do I need to get my break pads changed ?

-----------------

3) When I am going in 2nd or 3rd gear ( i.e. a low speeds ) when I
just remove my leg off the accelerator pedal Or when I begin slightly
pressing the accelerator pedal, I sometimes get a jerk. I have
never experienced this in the 4th and 5th gears. Is this a
serious issue ?

-----------------

While I bought it i knew there was a leak in the steering
pump which was supposedly fixed. Are any of these problems
related to this.

If possible please give me an idea of how much it might cost me
to fix these problems.

thanks
Raja

Response From morgan23

My opinion, try to check on your brakes... I also had this problem (with my old car) specially the brake thing and after I changed my brake pads.. It's already fine.

Response From Tom Greenleaf Top Rated Answer

Certainly check the brakes just because but that probably isn't this problem.

What may be wrong is a motor or trans mount. It could allow the engine and trans to move too much under varoius loads and you might be hearing the lack of rubber at a mount or the travel allow the exhause to touch body metal with makes a strange noise too. Exhaust has to flex some with the normal, allowed movement of the engine.

You might be able to see that moves too much with hood open, brakes holding hard and give it load forward and backward and see what moves too much. May take a helper,

Question From Taylor Electronics on 2005 Nissan/ Datsun Altima wont crank

HELLO GUYS I HAVE A 2005 Nissan/Datsun Altima 2.5L SFI DOHC 4cyl ONE DAY MY WIFE PARK IT. AND LATER ON SHE GOT BACK IN TO LEAVE CAR WOULD CRANK BUT WILL NOT SRART SO NOW I GOES AND UNPLUG A LARGE NUMBER OF CONNECTORS AND CLEAN THEM WITH WD40 NOW ENGINE WILL NOT CRANK / TURN OVER. I WAS TOLD LATER ON I NEED A CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. NOW I HAVE CREATED A SECOND PROBLEM BY UNPLUGING CONNECTORS AND CLEANING I HAVE BACK TRACK MY SELF OVER AND OVER A DOZEN TIMES TO MAKE SURE ALL CONNECTORS ARE PLUG IN. NOW SOMEONE TELLS ME THAT I HAVE CAUSE IT TO LOOSE MEMORY. SO IF IT IS THE MEMORY CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW CAN I GET IT BACK THE INEXPENSIVE WAY. THANKS GUYS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP WILLIAM almost forgot mileage 201739 Thanks again

AND I FORGOT TO WRITE THE CODES DOWN SORRY AND THE BATTERY HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED SEVERAL TIMES ALSO BUT HERE ARE TWO PENDING CODES P2122 / P2127 USEING THE ELETE AUTO SCANNER CP9185 THANKS AGAIN

Response From Discretesignals

One thing you shouldn't have done is start by disconnecting connectors. You shouldn't use any oil based lubricants in electrical connectors or connections any how. Use electrical contact cleaner or Deoxit.

The first step would have been to scan the engine computer for trouble codes to find out if there are any codes stored that are related to your no start. You probably generated a bunch of codes by unplugging things, so reconnect everything and clear codes. Then rescan to see if anything is stored. Write down the code number(s) and post them in here.

Another technique to use to troubleshoot a no start is to use this handy guide to figure out what is missing or not functioning properly:

Response From Taylor Electronics

HELLO AGAIN APPRECIATE THE HELP GUYS I RESCAN THE COMPUTER AND HERE ARE THE CODES P2122 / P2127 / P2138 / P0340 BUT THE ENGINE STILL WON'T CRANK WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS IN START POSITION THERE IS NO 12V AT THE STARTER COIL. THANKS AGAIN WILLIAM

Response From Hammer Time

The P0340 is a problem in the Cam sensor circuit. The other codes are all associated with the "Drive by wire" electronic throttle system. They could also shut the system down.

I would probably clear those codes and see which ones come back.

Response From Taylor Electronics Top Rated Answer

HELLO AGAIN I AM STILL SAID I GOT THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR AND INSTALL IT TODAY AND DISCONNECT BATTERY FOR ABOUT 30MIN NOW I CONNECT MY SCANNER BACK UP AND STILL GETTING P2122 / 2127 / 2138 BUT CRANKSHAFT SENSOR CODE IS GONE BUT I AM UNABLE TO CLEAR THE OTHER THREE CODES AND STILL DON'T HAVE 12V AT THE STARTER COIL WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE START POSITION. I WAS GOOGLEING AROUND AND FOUND THIS ABOUT A 2016 NISSAN ALTIMA THIS MUST BE PERFORMED EACH TIME HARNESS CONNNECTOR OF ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR OR ECM IS DISCONNRCTED. DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL APPLY TO MY 2005 NISSAN ALTIMA OR NOT I WON'T TRY IT UNLESS YOU TELL ME TO. I WILL SEND YOU TWO ATTACH ONE IS ABOUT THE PEDAL AND THE OTHER IS MY READING OF MY SCANNER. I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOU GUYS AND MY SELF I AM A TV TECH AND I AM ELECTRONICALLY AND MECHANICALLY INCLINE TO A PONIT THANKS AGAIN DON'T LET MY KILL ME. WILLIAM i tried to send an attach file but i am unable

Response From Discretesignals

Might want to figure out the no crank first. There are no PCM trouble codes that will cause a no crank situation. Need to troubleshoot the starting system first and then tackle the trouble codes.

Is this automatic transmission? Does it have an aftermarket alarm system? It should have NATS (Nissan antitheft system). Is the security indicator on while trying to crank the engine?

Response From Taylor Electronics

YES YOU ARE SO RIGHT I DON'T KNOW HOW I DONE THAT I GUESS I TOOK THAT TO BE THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR BUT LIKE YOU SAID PO340 IS CAM SHAFT CODE. BUT JUST IN CASE PLEAS POINT OUT THE CAM SHAFT SENSOR LOCATION. AND I AM NOT AWARE OF AN AFTERMARKET DEVICE ON THE CAR WE DID NOT GET IT NEW BUT I WILL CHECK FOR THAT TOMORROW IN THE STARTING CIRCUIT.I WILL GET BACK TO YOU THANKS FOR THE CORRECTION WILLIAM

AND STILL DON'T HAVE 12V AT THE STARTER COIL WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IN THE START POSITION.

Why are you guys going after the cam sensor if you can't get the starter to crank the engine?????

Response From Hammer Time

I just explained what the code meant.

Response From Taylor Electronics

HELLO GUYS AGAIN I WENT AHEAD AND PURCHASE A CAMSHAFT SENSOR ANYWAY AND RAN A WIRE FROM THE STARTER COIL TO TAP THE BATTERY + JUST TO START THE ENGINE AND IT STARTED UP JUST FINE MY EYES GOT BIG WITH A BIG SMILE BUT DID NOT HAVE NO ACCELERATOR CONTROL AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CRANK THE ENGINE IN THE CAR AT THIS POINT I GO BACK AND RECHECK MY CONNECTORS AGAIN AND DID I SAID DID FINE ONE THAT WAS NOT PLUG UP. WHEN IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE IT WAS JUST THE CAMSHAFT SENSOR. I HAVE LEARN MY LESSON ABOUT UNPLUGING EVERYTHING NOW EVERYTHING IS BACK TO NORMAL THANKS ALOT GUYS WILLIAM

Response From Taylor Electronics

YES IT DO HAVE AN AFTERMARKET ALARM IT'S A VIPER 5101 ALSO CAN YOU SEND ME A DIAGRAM OF THE IGNITION SWITCH GOING TO THE STARTER THANKS AGAIN WILLIAM

Response From Hammer Time

Not sure how you fixed a Cam sensor code by changing a Crank sensor but if it worked, great. I would clear the rest of the codes and see what comes back.
